  • Chicago Apartheid City
The epidemic of violence in Chicago has gotten out of hand. There are many reasons for the violence.
Some say it is because the demolition of the projects and displacement of the project residents was not planned. The Chicago projects were run by gangs. Each building had a gang member who all of the residents of that building feared. He was “the man.”
When a young man was shot on the steps of a church after a funeral, we realized that the gangs of Chicago no longer even respected the sanctity of the church.
A favorite pastime of young teens and adults who are involved in gangs is video games, like Grand Theft Auto. In these gangs, the person holding the joystick brutally kills others, day after day. They become immune to the blood and gore. They begin to feel empowered by their ability to take a human life, even if it is only in a video game. Soon they get the urge to do it for real, and so they go out and kill, not only members of opposing gangs, but often total strangers.
The people who run the city of Chicago, Mayor Emmanuel and prior to him, Mayor Daley, have no concept of gang lines, and really don’t care. The decision to change Carver High School – the only High School in Altgeld Gardens – into a military academy to which most residents of the Gardens do not qualify to attend was a senseless and heartless move, and just an example of how either the city planners do not care – or perhaps this is part of their plan.

  • Remembering Patti Page
CLAREMORE — Grammy award winner, musical icon, and Claremore native Patti Page has passed away in Encinitas, Calif. at the age of 85.According to Claremore Convention and Visitor’s Bureau director Tanya Andrews, Page died in her sleep on New Year’s Day.
“A colleague of mine contacted me about her passing in her sleep on New Year’s Day,” Andrews said. “We know she’d been having some health issues for a while — the same which prevented her from coming to Claremore last year when we premiered ‘Flipside’, the musical story of her life, here in Claremore. We’re all saddened to hear of her passing.”
Page, born Clara Ann Fowler, is originally from Claremore and rose to become one of the country’s best known female artists in the late 1940s and 1950s with songs such as “Tennesse Waltz,” “I Went to Your Wedding,” and “(How Much is That) Doggie in the Window.”
When rock and roll music became popular during the second half of the 1950s, traditional pop music was becoming less popular, but Page was one of few traditional pop music singers who was able to sustain her success.
She continuing to have major hits into the mid-1960s with “Old Cape Cod”, “Allegheny Moon”, “A Poor Man’s Roses (Or a Rich Man’s Gold)”, and “Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte”.
In 1997, Patti Page was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

  • The Fiscal Cliff Goes Forward
The House has passed HR 8 by a vote of 257-167, the Tax Relief Extension Act, which the Senate passed early Tuesday morning by a vote of 89 to 8. The bill will now be sent to the President for his signature. The so-called "fiscal cliff" agreement had been negotiated Monday between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Vice President Joe Biden. The legislation keeps the Bush era tax cuts for individuals making less than $400,000 and couples making less that $450,000. It also makes permanent the fixes for the Alternative Minimum Tax and delays government spending cuts for two months.
