  • Bankers Holiday
President Obama airs first radio ad target to African Americans.
"Economic growth has continued at a moderate rate so far this year. Real gross domestic product (GDP) rose at an annual rate of about 2 percent in the first quarter after increasing at a 3 percent pace in the fourth quarter of 2011. Growth last quarter was supported by further gains in private domestic demand, which more than offset a drag from a decline in government spending.
Labor market conditions improved in the latter part of 2011 and earlier this year. The unemployment rate has fallen about 1 percentage point since last August; and payroll employment increased 225,000 per month, on average, during the first three months of this year, up from about 150,000 jobs added per month in 2011. In April and May, however, the reported pace of job gains slowed to an average of 75,000 per month, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 8.2 percent".Chair Ben Bernanke
"As a result of this audit, we now know that the Federal Reserve provided more than $16 trillion in total financial assistance to some of the largest financial institutions and corporations in the United States and throughout the world,". "This is a clear case of socialism for the rich and rugged, you're-on-your-own individualism for everyone else."Senator Sanders

  • The Aftermath
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s victory in a recall election Tuesday amounted to a significant defeat for the nation’s labor unions, which had mounted one of their most aggressive grass-roots campaigns ever to defeat the Republican.WP

  • The Selling of Wisconsin
“What Mr. Walker and his backers are trying to do is to make Wisconsin — and eventually, America — less of a functioning democracy and more of a third-world-style oligarchy.”Paul Krugman
“This divide and conquer, no-compromise crowd — if they had been in control, there never would have been a United States Constitution.”Bill Clinton

Union households were a significantly bigger force this time, making up 33% of the vote compared with 26% of the vote in 2010, a definite boost to Barrett. But despite Walker’s prolonged conflict with labor, he didn’t do any worse with the union vote this time than he did in 2010, according to exit polls. He won 37% of union households in 2010 and 38% in 2012 — about the number that polls show represents the percentage of voters in union households that are Republican.

  • Cyber Security
Shodan  a cyber search engine developed  in late 2009exposes holes in industrial secuirty systems
Industrial control computers were built to run behind the safety of brick walls. But such security is rapidly eroded by links to the Internet. Recently, an unknown hacker broke into a water plant south of Houston using a default password he found in a user manual. A Shodan user found and accessed the cyclotron at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Yet another user found thousands of unsecured Cisco routers, the computer systems that direct data on the networks.
Over the past two years, Shodan has gathered data on nearly 100 million devices, recording their exact locations and the software systems that run them.
“Expose online devices,” the Web site says. “Webcams. Routers. Power Plants. iPhones. Wind Turbines. Refrigerators. VoIP Phones.”WP
