  • The Workingclass and the 2016 Election
One little-known element of that gap is that the white working class (WWC) resents professionals but admires the rich. Class migrants (white-collar professionals born to blue-collar families) report that “professional people were generally suspect” and that managers are college kids “who don’t know how to do anything but are full of ideas about how I have to do my job,” Alfred Lubrano
National debates about policing are fueling class tensions today in precisely the same way they did in the 1970s, when college kids derided policemen as “pigs.” This is a recipe for class conflict. Being in the police is one of the few good jobs open to Americans without a college education. Police get solid wages, great benefits, and a respected place in their communities.Joan c Williams
We – as in left, progressive, labor and social justice activists – are going to have to get better at integrating class, race, gender and democratic issues. When you say, “It’s the economy, stupid,” it seems to disregard that democratic issues like pay equity, education, gun violence and police crimes, and reproductive rights are part of the economy. • The 2016 Election Analysis: The 538 vs President Obama
Trump was able to win, in large part, because he won over a lot of northern white voters without a college degree — in states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, for example. Many of thesevotershad cast ballots for Obama twice. Trump’s more populist message likely helped him outperform recent GOP nominees with these voters.538 Harry Enten
Globalization, combined with technology, combined with social media and constant information, have disrupted people’s lives, sometimes in very concrete ways a manufacturing plant closes and suddenly an entire town no longer has what was the primary source of employment -- but also psychologically.  People are less certain of their national identities or their place in the world. And there is no doubt that that has produced populist movements, both from the left and the right, in many countries in Europe.  When you see a Donald Trump and a Bernie Sanders -- very unconventional candidates -- have considerable success, then obviously there's something there that's being tapped into.President Obama

  • President Obama Press Conference
"This office is bigger than any one person.  And that’s why ensuring a smooth transition is so important.  It’s not something that the Constitution explicitly requires, but it is one of those norms that are vital to a functioning democracy -- similar to norms of civility and tolerance, and a commitment to reason and to facts and analysis.  It's part of what makes this country work.  And as long as I’m President, we are going to uphold those norms and cherish and uphold those ideals" President Obama.

“My attitude was you’re fighting Syria, Syria is fighting ISIS, and you have to get rid of ISIS. Russia is now totally aligned with Syria, and now you have Iran, which is becoming powerful, because of us, is aligned with Syria. Now we’re backing rebels against Syria, and we have no idea who these people are.”DJ Trump

  • Rick Nolan Wins Re-Election in Minnesota’s 8th District
Democratic-Farmer-Labor Rep. Rick Nolan has defeated Republican Stewart Mills in their rematch in Minnesota’s 8th District, the Associated Press projects. Nolan led Mills 50.29 percent to 49.71 percent, with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
The contest was the most expensive House race in the country. Outside groups spent big in the district, which represented one of just three chances Republicans had to knock off a Democratic incumbent this year. Looking to narrow their deficit in the House, this was a must-hold seat for Democrats.
Minnesota’s 8th District covers the northeastern corner of the state, stretching from the Canada border to outer-ring Twin Cities suburbs in the south. It is home to the Iron Range — the once-prosperous iron ore and taconite mining region just northwest of Duluth.Rolcall
