Box Not Included

Jade Rose was off sick, so we've roped in a Box Not Included All-Star to join Hamish Steele in a sickening chat about Drag and RuPaul's Drag Race. It's Sewers of Paris' Matt Baume!

After a brief geekout about Deep Space Nine and The Golden Girls, we talk the history of drag, how we define it and our personal experiences before delving into the recent (and outgoing) controversies.

NOTE: As two cis, white, gay men, Hamish and Matt do not aim to settle the issues once and for all. We can only offer our limited opinions and this episode is meant as more of a geek out then a heated debate. We will be returning to this topic in the future with more diverse guests.

You can find out more about Matt Baume at his website: http://www.mattbaume.com/

HAPPY EPISODE 50! We made it! And for one day only... we ARE a Simpsons Podcast.

That's right, after bringing every single topic imaginable back to this animated sitcom, we decided to get our love for it out of our system. We talk favourite episodes, characters, jokes and, as ever, give it the critical eye we know you come here for.

This episode is almost 2 hours long but we don't even begin to cover half of the stuff we wanted to say. So maybe we'll have to return for our 138th Episode Spectacular!

We also discuss our joint trip to see Hamilton: An American Musical!

Today's episode of Box Not Included is a Very Special Episode. Jade and Hamish discuss times when tv shows have tried to tackle serious, controversial and topical subjects both well and ... not so well.

While "Very Special Episodes" are synonymous with 80s American family sitcoms, we look at ways all genres of television has tackled subjects such as gun control, death, homophobia, addiction, abortion, the AIDS crisis and more!

Shipping has become such a huge part of fandom that it's close to BECOMING what fandom is. And yet causally mention "your ship" in the outside world and you'll often get blank stares.

In today's episode, shipping expert Jade and shipping skeptic Hamish try and explain their feelings on the subject to each other. We talk its history and develop, the dark side of it and our own personal ships.

CONTENT WARNING: at one point we make mention of people being killed by gunfire & a school shooting (around the 38 minute mark). We recorded before the recent shooting in Florida & in that context, our words may sound inappropriately casual. Our apologies.

While Valentine's Day is behind us, we take it as an opportunity to look at our favourite romances in media! And because queer romances are few and far between, we also talk about our favourite cishet pairings.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been with us for almost 10 years, sprawling almost 20 movies (with plans for many more), countless tv episodes and shorts. This ground-breaking shared cinematic universe can take us to the most dizzying cosmic space opera, to the most intimate crime drama, to characters bigger than planets to those the size of an ant. So, as we are destined to ask on Box Not Included, where are all the queers?

In today's episode Jade and Hamish explore the MCU, a franchise which we both have a huge amount of enthusiasm for, but wonder if and when we'll see ourselves on the super-screen. We discuss why the MCU has succeed while other cinematic universes haven't, what our favourite corners of this world are and what our hopes for the future may be (they're gay).
