Something I love about this time of year, on top of all the beautiful festive moments and memories, is the opportunity to rest and reflect on the year that was, with a fresh new door opening to a new year just around the corner. I’m a traditionalist when it comes to setting goals. I know you can set them anytime, that the time of year really doesn’t matter, but a New year to me is like starting a crisp, white unmarked notebook. It almost carries the smell of anticipation and a tangible sense of excitement.

You’ve most likely heard the quote: You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, by Jim Rohn.

And it makes sense, right? Think about when you perhaps got caught up in the wrong crowd at high school and the decisions that flowed on from that.

Or maybe how that applies to a sporting team. I know for a fact that my girls play a much better quality game of netball when they’re playing with a team filled with strong players rather than the opposite, where they seem to have forgotten how to catch a ball!

But how does this apply to business?

And how can you consciously hand pick your own influence circle to thrive in business?

Well first of all, it takes courage. Just like breaking away from the cool group or having the guts to say no to peer pressure, it takes a certain resolve to take the steps required to invest your time, money and energy into people who you know will help you to stay true to your own values, mission, and most importantly, life and business goals.

As we start to wind down for 2023, it’s time to reflect on the year that has been and what lies ahead. I know it’s been a weird year for a lot of brands. We have seen businesses closing their doors. Perhaps even ones we thought were doing so well. And this is disconcerting in itself. But that doesn’t mean it has to happen to YOU..

Perhaps you made plans or dreamt up big lofty goals at the beginning of the year, but then well… life happened. Or really, 2023 happened. And I feel like we’ve been saying that about every year since 2020. It just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Or should we say, curiouser and curiouser?

But what this highlights to me (and not just from a marketing perspective), is that more than ever before, you can’t simply follow someone else’s formulas, strategies or tactics and expect success to flow into your business. You have to pave your own way.

I believe that we will get through this economic speed bump, which has undoubtedly impacted the small business community in general. But the only way through is to stay true to your vision; your mission and your brand. Keep your “why” closer than ever before.

Never stop investing in your brand, because above all else, at the end of the day, even if your sales aren’t quite what you had hoped for, if your brand is strong, you will make it out the other side! Stronger.

Some might call these excuses. I call them life.

Some say you need to make sacrifices to grow your business. But my question to you is: which sacrifices are actually worth it? But which ones are necessary? Which ones are detrimental to you? Which ones are beneficial?

I chatted briefly on the podcast a couple of weeks ago about the impact that consumer behaviour has on the decisions of our potential clients to work with us or not. If you haven’t listened to that episode, go and catch it now.

I touched on facing rejection in your business, and how adapting to change in general consumer behaviour can have a positive impact on the decision making process. Basically, on whether or not you can nurture a “yes” out of a potential client or customer.

But a “no” isn’t always a hard “no”. Think about it like this. Perhaps they’re saying no not because of something you’ve said or done, or they don’t like your offer, or they don’t like the sound of your voice, or your hair, your they think you’re ugly (jokes, our minds are pretty funny the way they jump to conclusions like this though right!?). Maybe they are saying “no” because they actually need you to help them step towards a “yes”!
