John has had a lifetime career in travel. He started as a trainee with Thomas Cook, He was then selected to transfer to the USA, where he spent 5 years in a senior role before becoming managing director, UK at the age of 34. He then went on to become MD of the international business, comprising 54 countries. During his time at Thomas Cook, he introduced the famous strapline “Don’t just book it, Thomas Cook it”

In 2000, John moved to become the MD of Lunn Poly and subsequently Retail Director TUI UK.

In 2004, John was appointed as CEO, Advantage Travel Centres, the largest independent travel consortium. He retired from this role in April 2013.

John was elected as the 1st chairman of ABTA in 2009 and served a 4-year term.

He was presented with a lifetime achievement award in 2009. He was inducted into the Travel & Hospitality Industry Hall of Fame in 2010 and received an industry outstanding achievement award in 2012.

He is chairman of Holidaysplease Ltd, EFR Travel Limited, Ski Lifts Ltd and Latin Routes Ltd. He is also chairman of the advisory board of Travel Ledger. He was previously chairman of Ski Solutions Limited and Amber Road Travel Limited. John is also a trustee of ABTA LifeLine.

This episode is extra special. It’s with great regret that I have to let you all know that unfortunately Alex passed away recently whilst he was in Nepal. Alex was an incredible human being and a force for good in this world. His legacy in raising awareness for Parkinsons will continue through his family, friends, the charities that he supported and all those who’s lives he touched. For me it was a particular honour to be able to speak with Alex and help spread the word about Parkinsons which was so important to him. Shaa Wasmund MBE has over 20 years of experience building seven figure businesses and works fiercely towards financial empowerment for all.

At 21 she was the youngest and only licensed female boxing manager in the world working with Super Middleweight Champion, Chris Eubank.

In this episode, Jeannette talks to Anna McKay who went from being a globally recognised intellectual property lawyer to developing and launching the Zeez Sleep Pebble and Sleep Pad with Steve Walpole. Born in London, brought up in Zimbabwe and rural Nottinghamshire, Anna became a globally recognized intellectual property lawyer, litigating big cases involving medicines and science, usually against big multinationals. She was a chronic insomniac. Five hours of sleep was exceptional, and Anna often didn't sleep for several nights in a row. Acupuncture, massage, Shiatsu, and other therapies helped her to cope, but made little impact on her sleep. She loved her work – it was interesting, demanding, and very high energy: and that kept her awake, however, it was a dangerous lifestyle. 

One day, a minor workplace irritation made her realise that she didn't want to be a partner in a law firm any longer. She began to work with inventors and gained more control over her life. This change enabled her to address her sleep differently. It became a mission.

Eventually, she set up Zeez Sleep with electronics engineer Steve Walpole. Steve and her measured brainwaves, tested and learnt how to encourage our brains to sleep well. They developed, patented, and now sell the Zeez Sleep Pebble. An under the pillow device which mimics the brain activities of relaxation and deep sleep to prompt poor sleepers to adopt a pattern of good sleep. It is a ground-breaking device, with the potential to change the way we sleep and transform lives. The kind of corporate culture in which she worked as a young lawyer, with all-night meetings fuelled by coffee and relaxation predicated on alcohol is unsatisfying and unproductive, but understandable if it seems as if there is no other way. Supporting good sleep is a way to get back balance and change our culture.

When music is your yin and racing your yang, it's no surprise that London born Farah Nanji, known by her artist alias as NINJA, has had some of the world's wisest stages from Pacha Ibiza to Egg London spinning into transcendent circles for the last decade.
