  • You Don’t Need to Know Why to Begin Healing

Have you ever believed that if you could just understand why something happened, you would finally be able to move on?

Why did they make that choice? Why didn’t they tell the truth? Why did the relationship end? Why wasn’t your effort valued?

Searching for answers can help us learn and heal. But sometimes, the question “Why?” keeps us emotionally attached to an experience long after it has stopped giving us anything useful.

In this episode of Brave Moves, Julie DeLucca-Collins explores the difference between reflection and rumination. Reflection helps us recognize patterns and make different choices. Rumination keeps us replaying the same painful experience, hoping that one more night of overthinking will finally make everything make sense.

You may never receive the explanation, apology, or closure you deserve. But you don’t need someone else’s answer to begin healing.

    In this episode:

    •  Why our minds struggle with unanswered questions
    •  The difference between productive reflection and rumination
    •  How searching for “why” can keep us connected to the past
    •  Why another person’s explanation may not provide peace
    •  The difference between closure and complete understanding
    •  How to accept an ending without approving of how it happened
    •  Why letting go does not mean excusing someone’s behavior
    •  The question that can help you return to the life you can influence

    Today’s Brave Move

Identify one “why” question you keep asking that is no longer producing useful information.

Write it down. Then replace it with:

    “What do I need now?”

Maybe you need to grieve, forgive yourself, establish a boundary, stop checking someone’s social media, ask for support, or allow yourself to begin again.

You don’t have to understand everything to begin healing. An unanswered question does not have to become an unfinished life.

  • Are You Overfunctioning? When Being Needed Becomes Exhausting

Are you the person who remembers everything, anticipates everyone’s needs, solves problems before anyone asks, and says, “I’ve got it,” even when you don’t?

From the outside, people may see you as dependable, generous, and incredibly capable. Inside, you may feel responsible for everyone’s happiness, stress, disappointment, and reactions.

In this episode of Brave Moves, Julie DeLucca-Collins explores overfunctioning: the pattern of taking on more responsibility than is reasonably yours, often while the people around you take on less.

Helping isn’t the problem. The question is whether your help is supporting someone or making you responsible for managing their life. When you continually step in, fix problems, prevent consequences, and manage other people’s emotions, the very strength everyone praises can become the thing that exhausts you.

    In this episode:

    •  What overfunctioning looks like in everyday life
    •  The difference between helping, supporting, and taking over
    •  Why capable people can become responsible for everyone
    •  How people-pleasing, anxiety, and early family roles may contribute
    •  Why being needed can feel safer than expressing your own needs
    •  How overfunctioning can create resentment and unhealthy expectations
    •  Why constantly rescuing people may prevent them from growing
    •  How to care for others without carrying what belongs to them

    Today’s Brave Move

Before stepping in to fix the next problem, ask yourself:

    •  Did this person ask for my help?
    •  Is this actually my responsibility?
    •  What might they learn if I don’t fix it?

Choose one responsibility today that you will leave with its rightful owner.

Instead of automatically saying, “I’ve got it,” try:

“I trust you to handle that.”

You can be loving without rescuing. You can be dependable without becoming responsible for everyone.

  • Are You Practicing Irritation? How to Interrupt Anger Before You React

Have you ever let a frustrating 30-second interaction ruin the next three hours?

The original moment may be brief, but we keep the anger alive by replaying what happened, imagining what we should have said, and retelling the story. Without realizing it, we may be practicing irritation until anger begins to feel like part of our personality.

In this episode of Brave Moves, Julie DeLucca-Collins explains how to recognize anger in your body before it controls your response. A clenched jaw, tight fists, raised shoulders, shallow breathing, or a change in your voice can serve as an early warning that irritation is taking over.

Anger isn’t your personality. It is an emotion—and it doesn’t have to make your decisions.

    In this episode:

    •  What it means to “practice irritation”
    •  How replaying frustrating experiences keeps anger active
    •  Why anger often appears in the body before we name it
    •  How noticing physical signals can interrupt an automatic reaction
    •  Why naming an emotion can help reduce its intensity
    •  The difference between suppressing anger and responding intentionally
    •  How to address a problem without creating a second one
    •  Why anger can provide information without controlling your behavior

    Today’s Brave Move

The next time irritation begins, say:

    “I notice I’m getting angry.”

Then scan your body. Unclench your hands, relax your jaw, lower your shoulders, and take one slow breath before responding.

You don’t have to resolve the entire situation immediately. You are simply creating enough space to choose how you want to show up.

  • Are You Resting or Just Scrolling? Why Your Brain Needs Boredom

When was the last time you allowed yourself to be genuinely bored, without reaching for your phone, turning on a podcast, or filling the silence with another distraction?

In this episode of Brave Moves, Julie explores our relationship with technology and asks an important question: Are we actually resting, or are we simply giving our brains something different to process?

Constant stimulation can prevent us from experiencing the quiet moments that allow our minds to wander, reflect, make connections, and imagine what comes next. Julie introduces the brain’s default mode network and explains how mental downtime supports self-reflection, autobiographical memory, creative thinking, and our ability to picture ourselves in the future.

This isn’t an anti-technology conversation. It’s an invitation to use technology more intentionally—and to stop treating every empty moment as a problem to be fixed.

    In this episode:

    •  Why scrolling isn’t necessarily the same as resting
    •  How technology occupies the natural pauses in our lives
    •  What the brain’s default mode network does
    •  Why our best ideas often arrive while walking, driving, or showering
    •  How constant consumption can make it harder to hear our own thoughts
    •  Why quiet can feel uncomfortable
    •  The connection between mental space, clarity, and creativity
    •  A simple experiment to help you reclaim your attention

    Today’s Brave Move

Choose one ordinary activity and spend five minutes without your phone, music, television, or another source of stimulation.

Let your mind wander without trying to make the experience productive. Then ask yourself:

What have I been too distracted to notice?

  • What Would Your 21-Year-Old Self Ask You? How to Trust Yourself Through Life Transitions and Embrace Change

What Would Your 21-Year-Old Self Ask You?

A recent lunch with the now-grown son of close friends left Julie wondering where the years had gone. She first met him as a remarkably talkative six-year-old when she began dating her now-husband, Dan. Since then, she has watched him grow up, play hockey, excel in school, graduate from college, and begin his career.

Seeing him enter this new chapter prompted Julie to say something many of us have thought: “I wish I knew at 21 what I know today.”

But would her 21-year-old self have listened? Probably not. She thought she already knew everything—and some of her mistakes became the very experiences that shaped the woman she is today.

In this episode of Brave Moves, Julie explores how quickly life changes and why transitions can leave us feeling excited, uncertain, and afraid all at once. Whether you are dropping a child off at college, adjusting to an empty nest, leaving a job, beginning a new career, ending a relationship, or entering chapter two, three, or four, you are not starting over from nothing.

    You are beginning with experience.

Everything you have survived, learned, attempted, and overcome has prepared you to meet what comes next. Trusting change does not mean knowing exactly how the next chapter will unfold. It means trusting the person you have become to navigate it.

    In This Episode

    • The lunch that reminded Julie how quietly and quickly time passes
    • Why transitions can bring excitement and grief at the same time
    • Whether our younger selves would have accepted our advice
    • How mistakes, fears, and detours help shape who we become
    • Why fear does not necessarily mean we are unprepared
    • The difference between starting over and beginning with experience
    • How to trust yourself when you cannot see what comes next

    This Episode’s Brave Move

Instead of writing a letter to your 21-year-old self, allow your 21-year-old self to write to you.

    Begin with:

“Dear Me, tell me what life is like now.”

What would your younger self want to know? What was she afraid of? What did she hope you would accomplish? What would surprise her about your life today?

Then write back. Tell her about the mistakes, heartbreaks, brave decisions, unexpected opportunities, and reinventions that helped you become who you are.

You may discover that your younger self does not need your advice nearly as much as your present self needs her courage, curiosity, and belief in what is possible.

  • The Soundtrack of My Becoming: What Jimmy Buffett Taught Me About Living Bravely

Some musicians create songs. Others create the soundtrack to our lives.

For Julie DeLucca-Collins, Jimmy Buffett’s music has been a constant companion since high school. It followed her through marriage, motherhood, divorce, reinvention, professional milestones, and the creation of a new home and life.

In this deeply personal episode of Brave Moves, Julie shares why Jimmy’s death felt like losing a big brother, and how she had to set aside her grief that day to appear on television and discuss her upcoming TEDx talk.

But Jimmy Buffett’s legacy extends far beyond his music. Julie reflects on the community builder he was, his belief in enjoying life while we can, and his ability to bring people from different generations and backgrounds together. His influence reminds us that success is measured not only by what we accomplish but also by the people we uplift and the community we leave behind.

Julie also shares why she is returning to Key West for Just a Few Friends Key West, a five-day Labor Day weekend celebration honoring Jimmy Buffett’s life, music, generosity, and enduring connection to the island.

Taking place September 3–7, 2026, the festival brings people together through live music, storytelling, local history, island experiences, charitable activities, and the Second Line Memorial Parade.

This episode explores what happens when remembrance becomes action and when one person’s legacy inspires thousands to continue creating joy, connection, and meaningful change.

    In This Episode

    • How Jimmy Buffett’s music became part of Julie’s personal soundtrack
    • Why familiar music takes on new meaning as we evolve
    • The moment Julie learned Jimmy had died
    • Balancing private grief with an important professional milestone
    • Why Jimmy was as much a community builder as he was a musician
    • What Julie learned from interviewing Lulu
    • How Just a Few Friends carries Jimmy’s values forward
    • Why fun, joy, and connection are essential parts of a meaningful life
    • Julie’s vision for a larger documentary about legacy and community
    • How ordinary people become hometown heroes
    • Why honoring someone’s legacy requires us to look forward as well as back

  • Dolly Parton's Business Legacy: The Power of Saying No (Pt. 2)

In Part 2 of this two-part tribute on Brave Moves, Julie DeLucca-Collins unpacks the business side of Dolly Parton's legacy — starting with the night in 1974 she turned down Elvis Presley's request to record "I Will Always Love You" rather than give up half the publishing rights. That decision paid off nearly two decades later when Whitney Houston's cover became a global phenomenon, and Dolly used the royalties to invest in a historically Black Nashville neighborhood, calling it "the house that Whitney built."

Julie also covers Dollywood's staggering economic impact — $1.8 billion annually and the largest employer in Sevier County, Tennessee — along with Dolly's dropout-prevention program and her wildfire relief efforts for displaced families in 2016. This episode is a real-world lesson in ownership, boundaries, and building wealth that gives back.

    In this episode:

    • The story behind Dolly's decision to turn down Elvis Presley
    • How that decision paid off when Whitney Houston recorded the song
    • "The house that Whitney built" — investing royalties back into community
    • Dollywood's economic impact and Dolly's philanthropy in her home county

  • What Dolly Parton Taught Us About Living On Purpose (Part 1: The Personal)

Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at age 80, and in this episode of Brave Moves, Julie DeLucca-Collins opens up about the grief of losing a public figure you've never met, and what research says about why that grief is real. Julie then unpacks the personal side of Dolly's legacy: marrying young, before fame, and staying married for nearly 60 years without ever losing her name, ambition, or identity to it; never having children, yet nurturing millions through the Imagination Library; and being kind without ever being mistaken for weak.

Julie explores why Dolly's record-breaking favorability rating — outpacing every major political figure in a recent national poll- wasn't built on staying neutral, but on decades of quiet, consistent love that made room for her to say hard things without losing anyone. This is Part 1 of a two-part series; Part 2 covers Dolly's business acumen.

    In this episode:

    • What parasocial grief is, and why it's real
    • Marriage, identity, and nurturing without motherhood
    • Kindness without weakness, ambition without apology
    • The record-breaking favorability poll, and why it wasn't built on neutrality

  • Day 8: Figuring Out What You Want to Do With Your Life - Fun and Recreation

In Day 8 of this life-clarity series on Brave Moves, Julie DeLucca-Collins turns to the area most often sacrificed first when life gets full: fun and recreation. She makes the case that fun isn't the reward you get after everything else is handled — it's part of what makes you a person who can handle everything else in the first place.

Julie names a sneaky trap: even our hobbies and rest often get recruited into the same productivity system running the rest of our lives, turning workouts into metrics and vacations into content opportunities. She applies the "no list" method from Day 2 specifically to leisure, helping listeners give themselves real permission to rest and play without earning it first.

    In this episode:

    • Why fun is usually the first area sacrificed when life gets full
    • How even hobbies and rest get pulled into productivity culture
    • Applying the "no list" method to leisure and recreation
    • Giving yourself permission to do something purely for enjoyment

  • Day 7: Figuring Out What You Want to Do With Your Life - Personal Growth

In Day 7 of this life-clarity series on Brave Moves, Julie DeLucca-Collins turns the lens toward personal growth itself — and names the trap hiding inside it. She explores how self-improvement can quietly become another category to optimize, another book or podcast to check off, chasing a finish line that doesn't exist, and connects this back to the be-good vs. get-better framework from a previous episode.

Julie draws a clear distinction between actually growing and performing growth for an audience of one — yourself, watching and grading yourself — and applies the "no list" method from Day 2 to personal growth specifically, helping listeners identify when self-improvement has quietly become self-criticism in a nicer outfit.

    In this episode:

    • Why personal growth can become another performance to maintain
    • The difference between growth and the performance of growth
    • Revisiting be-good vs. get-better, applied to self-improvement
