Brave Moves: Confidence, Mindset & Business Growth for Women Entrepreneurs episodes

  • How to Be There When Someone Is Overwhelmed

How to Help Someone Calm Down: Co-Regulation with Friends and Family

Have you ever sat with someone who was crying and felt pressure to find the right words? A scene in Ted Lasso reminded me that sometimes the most helpful thing we can offer is our steady presence.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I talk about co-regulation: how a calm, responsive person can help someone feel supported while they’re overwhelmed. We’ll look at why advice can wait, how to ask what your friend or family member needs, and what it means to hold space while respecting your own limits.

    What you’ll hear:

    • What co-regulation means in everyday life
    • Why we often rush to fix someone else’s feelings
    • Simple ways to offer support when someone is upset
    • Why asking “Would you like me to sit with you?” can be more useful than guessing
    • How to recognize when you need support, too

Your Brave Move: The next time someone you care about is upset, pause before offering a solution. Ask what would help, and if they want company, give them time to feel what they’re feeling.

  • We Don’t Have to Keep Doing It This Way - The Rules You’re Allowed to Stop Following

How many rules are you still following that you never actually chose?

Maybe you learned that family comes first no matter how they treat you. Maybe ending a decades-long friendship feels wrong simply because of your history together. Perhaps you've been taught that being exhausted means you're working hard enough, saying no makes you selfish, or keeping the peace is more important than speaking up.

At some point, we have to ask ourselves: Do I actually believe this, or have I just been carrying it?

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m reflecting on a post I saw from Tiny Buddha about some of the things our generation has begun leaving behind. It made me think about how many expectations we inherit from our families, culture, workplaces, and communities without ever consciously deciding whether we want them.

This isn't about blaming our parents or pretending our generation has everything figured out. They inherited their own set of rules, too. It's about recognizing that adulthood gives us the opportunity to decide what still belongs in our lives and what doesn't.

Sometimes that means setting boundaries with family. It might mean allowing an old friendship to end or leaving a relationship that is hurting you. It can mean letting your children decide who gets access to their bodies instead of requiring affection because someone is a relative.

And sometimes it's much simpler. You stop feeling guilty about resting. You say what you actually think. You make a career decision based on the life you want instead of the life someone else imagined for you.

One of the hardest parts is that changing an old pattern can make other people uncomfortable, particularly when they benefited from the version of you who rarely said no.

That doesn't automatically mean your new choice is wrong.

    Your Brave Move

    Ask yourself:

What is one rule I'm still following that I never actually chose?

    Where did you learn it?

    Do you still believe it?

And if you don't, what might change if you stopped organizing your life around it?

You can appreciate where you came from without having to repeat everything you inherited.

  • Can You Actually Rewire Your Brain?

We hear people talk about “rewiring your brain” all the time, but what does that actually mean? And can we really change thought patterns and behaviors that have been with us for years?

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m digging into neuroplasticity and what it tells us about our ability to change. Our brains continue to adapt based on our experiences and the things we repeatedly do. That matters when you start thinking about some of the thoughts and reactions that have become so familiar we barely notice them anymore.

Maybe you automatically assume you're not qualified when an opportunity comes along. Maybe one unanswered email sends you into a story about what you've done wrong. Maybe you've spent years describing yourself as someone who procrastinates, isn't confident, or never follows through.

At some point, a pattern we've practiced can start to feel like part of our personality.

But changing it doesn't require waking up tomorrow as an entirely different person.

Sometimes the beginning is simply catching yourself in the moment and recognizing, “Oh, there I go again.”

We’ll talk about why old patterns can return even when you’ve been working hard to change them, how small experiences give your brain new information, and why falling back into an old response doesn't erase the progress you've already made.

One idea I keep coming back to is this: Sometimes the real change is how quickly we come back.

    Your Brave Move

Think about one thought or behavior that keeps showing up in your life, especially one you've started describing as “just how I am.”

    Get curious about it.

How long have you been practicing that response? When does it tend to show up? The next time you notice it happening, see if you can choose one slightly different response.

You don't have to fix yourself. Just catch the pattern once and give yourself another option.

Then see what happens when you keep practicing.

  • Maybe You Don’t Need More Talent. You Need More Reps

What if the thing holding you back isn’t a lack of talent?

Maybe you’re not bad at sales. Maybe you haven’t had enough conversations yet. Maybe you’re not terrible on camera. Maybe you’re simply inexperienced. Maybe confidence isn’t something you need to find before you begin. Maybe it’s something you build by collecting evidence that you can do hard and unfamiliar things.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m exploring an idea inspired by Geoff Colvin’s book Talent Is Overrated: getting better isn’t simply about natural ability. How we practice matters.

We often look at someone who is great at speaking, selling, podcasting, writing, or running a business and assume they were somehow born knowing how to do it. What we don’t see are all the awkward attempts, small audiences, unanswered pitches, offers that didn’t sell, and repetitions that helped them develop the skills we now admire.

We also talk about deliberate practice, which is different from simply doing the same thing repeatedly. It means noticing where you struggle, working on that specific skill, getting feedback, adjusting, and trying again.

If you’ve been waiting until you feel confident or “good enough” before you take your next step, this episode is your reminder that you might have the equation backward.

    In This Episode

    • Why we often mistake experience for natural talent
    • How “I’m not good at this” can become an identity that keeps us stuck
    • What deliberate practice actually looks like in business and everyday life
    • Why discomfort doesn’t necessarily mean you’re doing something wrong
    • How smaller repetitions can help you build skills without overwhelming yourself
    • Why confidence often comes from evidence and experience, not preparation
    • How to stop judging your early attempts and start learning from them

    Your Brave Move

Think about one thing you keep telling yourself you’re “not good at.”

    Then ask:

What would one deliberate repetition look like today?

Make the video. Have the conversation. Practice the opening of your presentation. Make the ask. Pitch the podcast. Talk about your offer.

Then, instead of judging how you did, study it.

What worked? What felt uncomfortable? What could you adjust next time?

You don’t have to become good enough before you begin.

Sometimes beginning is exactly how you become good.

  • I Don’t Feel My Age: Making Peace With Getting Older

Have you ever said your age out loud and thought, “Wait…how did THAT happen?”

Getting older is inevitable, but our relationship with aging can get complicated. There are the physical changes, the aches and pains, the doctor appointments, watching our parents age, and that growing awareness that time isn’t unlimited. Then there’s the pressure, especially for women, to somehow keep getting older without ever actually looking older.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m talking about what happens when we stop treating aging like something we need to fight and start looking at what it can give us.

Because while getting older comes with some uncomfortable realities, it also brings perspective. We begin to recognize what matters, what we’re no longer willing to tolerate, and how precious our time really is.

I also explore that strange disconnect between the number on our birthday cake and the age we actually feel inside. The younger versions of us haven’t disappeared. They’ve simply lived more life, made more mistakes, loved more people, learned more lessons, and hopefully stopped caring quite so much about things that never deserved our energy in the first place.

Most importantly, I don’t want to spend this decade wishing I looked like I did in the last one, only to arrive at the next decade wishing I had appreciated who I was today.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • Why aging can bring up fear, grief, and anxiety
    • The pressure women feel to stay youthful
    • Why realizing that time is limited can actually bring clarity
    • The difference between our chronological age and how old we feel
    • Appreciating the person you are now instead of constantly looking backward
    • Why getting older can help us become more intentional about how we spend our time

    Your Brave Move

    Ask yourself:

If I stopped being afraid of getting older, what would I do differently with the age I am right now?

Maybe you’d wear the thing you think you’re “too old” to wear. Maybe you’d finally take the trip, start something new, change direction, or stop waiting for a younger, thinner, less tired, more organized version of yourself to start living.

You don’t have to outrun the calendar.

    You get to keep becoming.

  • The Second Act: Redefining Success in Your Next Chapter

What happens when the success you spent years building is no longer the success you want?

For much of our lives, success is defined by external milestones. We pursue the promotion, build something secure, and become the person others trust to handle responsibility. Eventually, those measurements may stop telling the whole story.

In this episode of Brave Moves, Julie explores what it means to redefine success during your next chapter. She discusses why wanting something different does not make you ungrateful and how women in midlife can feel caught between the life they worked hard to create and the one they are beginning to imagine.

Your second act does not require you to disregard everything you have accomplished or completely reinvent your life. You are allowed to use what you have learned to create a definition of success that reflects who you are now.

You are not starting from zero. You are beginning with experience, a better understanding of yourself, and the knowledge that fulfillment may matter more than appearing impressive.

    What You’ll Hear

    • Why an old definition of success may stop feeling meaningful
    • How responsibility and other people’s expectations affect our choices
    • Why changing direction does not erase what you have accomplished
    • How experience gives you an advantage in your next chapter
    • Why fulfillment and recognition do not always feel the same
    • How to begin exploring a new definition of success without changing everything overnight

    Today’s Brave Move

    Complete this sentence:

“Success in my next chapter would feel like…”

Think about how you want your ordinary days to feel instead of answering with something that belongs on a résumé.

Once you have your answer, choose one small decision that would bring your current life closer to that definition.

You do not need to know the entire plot of your second act. You are allowed to begin with one honest page.

If this episode made you think of a woman who is questioning what success means to her, share it with her. Changing her definition does not mean she failed at the old one.

  • The City That Taught Me to Dream Bigger

Have you ever returned to a place from your past and suddenly recognized an earlier version of yourself?

After spending several days in New York City for Podcast Movement, Julie found herself reflecting on the city where she grew up and the woman she was becoming there.

While sitting in a café waiting for a cold brew and a New York bagel, she noticed a young woman dressed for work. Something about her brought Julie back to her own thirties, when she was learning how to make an impression while still carrying uncertainty she had not yet learned how to name.

New York is often described as a city that can break you, but that is not Julie’s story. The city encouraged her to dream beyond what seemed practical, remain curious, and believe she could create opportunities even when she did not have the entire plan.

As Julie waited for her train home to Connecticut, she felt the sadness of leaving New York behind again. Then she realized that she did not have to leave behind the part of herself the city helped create.

In this personal episode of Brave Moves, Julie explores how the places we love continue to shape us and why we do not need the perfect location, connections, or circumstances to pursue a meaningful dream.

    What You’ll Hear

    • How returning to New York helped Julie reconnect with her younger self
    • Why New York felt empowering rather than cold or intimidating
    • What the city taught her about curiosity and possibility
    • The emotion of leaving a place that still feels like home
    • Why opportunity is not limited to a particular location
    • How to carry the best parts of your past into your life today

    Today’s Brave Move

Think about a place that helped shape you.

Ask yourself what that place gave you and how you can bring that quality into the life you are living now.

You may no longer live there, and the place itself may have changed, but what you learned does not have to remain behind. Carry it with you as you take your next step.

If this episode made you think about a meaningful place or an earlier version of yourself, send Julie a message and share what that place taught you.

  • Spicy Is Where Confidence Starts to Grow

A spicy move makes you nervous, but you can still imagine yourself doing it. You may feel the urge to postpone it or suddenly decide that reorganizing your desk is urgent, but underneath those nerves, you can also feel a little excitement.

In this third episode of the Mild, Spicy, or Extra Hot series, Julie explores the spicy zone. This is where you move beyond what feels familiar without pushing yourself so far that you become overwhelmed.

Confidence rarely arrives before the action. It develops when you move through uncertainty and discover that you can handle the experience. You may stumble over your words or decide afterward that you would do something differently, but that does not mean the move failed. It means you now have real information instead of an imagined worst-case scenario.

    What You’ll Hear

    • How to recognize when a move is spicy
    • Why nervousness does not mean you are making the wrong choice
    • How action gives you experience that preparation cannot provide
    • Why the spicy zone can help you build genuine confidence
    • How to add one manageable level of discomfort to a familiar action

    Today’s Brave Move

Take something that has become comfortable and add one level of spice.

If you have been drafting the post, publish it. If you have been practicing your introduction, use it with a real person. If you have been thinking about asking for an opportunity, send the message.

Choose a move that makes you pause without making you disappear. Then pay attention to what actually happens instead of relying on the frightening version your imagination created.

In the next episode, Julie explores extra-hot moves and how to recognize when a big leap is courageous versus when you are using intensity to prove something.

  • Mild Does Not Mean You Are Playing Small

Mild gets a bad reputation. We hear the word and assume it means safe, boring, or afraid. But choosing a smaller move can be an intentional way to begin, especially when the bigger version of your goal has kept you frozen.

In this follow-up to “Are You Mild, Spicy, or Extra Hot?” Julie explores why confidence grows through actions we can complete, process, and eventually repeat. A mild move should still create some discomfort, but it does not need to send you into panic or leave you so overwhelmed that you never want to try again.

Julie also talks about the difference between intentional mild and hiding. Preparation can feel productive, but eventually something has to happen outside your own head. You need to send the email, share the idea, or have the conversation you keep rehearsing.

Your capacity also changes during different seasons of life. Choosing a smaller step while grieving, caregiving, managing health concerns, or recovering from exhaustion does not mean you have lost your ambition. It means you are paying attention to what your life requires right now.

    What You’ll Hear

    • Why mild does not automatically mean playing small
    • How manageable action gives your brain evidence that you can handle discomfort
    • The difference between thoughtful preparation and avoidance
    • Why a smaller move can provide valuable feedback
    • How changing life circumstances affect your capacity
    • Why following through builds trust in yourself

    Today’s Brave Move

Choose one mild action connected to a goal that matters to you and complete it within the next twenty-four hours.

Give the action a clear finish line so you know when it is done. Keep it small enough that you will follow through, but meaningful enough that it moves you beyond planning.

Once you complete it, notice what you learned. The action may help you realize that you are ready to add a little more spice next time.

In the next episode, Julie continues the series by exploring the spicy zone, where you can feel the discomfort but remain present enough to follow through.

If this episode reminded you of someone who has been dismissing her smaller progress, share it with her. Her mild move still counts.

  • Are You Mild, Spicy, or Extra Hot?

Have you ever ordered something extra spicy and immediately realized you made a terrible mistake? Your eyes are watering, you cannot feel your tongue, and instead of enjoying your meal, you are simply trying to survive it while pretending everything is fine.

Sometimes we approach personal growth the same way.

In this episode of Brave Moves, Julie introduces the idea of mild, spicy, and extra-hot moves. She explores why we often assume that the person taking the biggest risk is automatically the bravest, even though courage looks different for each of us.

A challenge that feels mild to one person may require real courage from someone who is worried about being judged. Something you handled easily last year may feel much harder during a season of caregiving, grief, health concerns, or exhaustion. Your capacity changes, and your next move needs to reflect the life you are living now.

Julie also explains why comparing your decisions to someone else’s visible success gives you an incomplete picture. You may see the podcast, promotion, or new business, but you cannot always see the preparation, support, and sacrifices behind it.

This episode will help you begin identifying what mild, spicy, and extra hot look like in your own life. Tomorrow, Julie continues the conversation by exploring why choosing a mild move can be intentional and courageous rather than a sign of weakness.

    What You’ll Hear

    •  How to identify the level of discomfort connected to a decision
    •  Why the biggest or most public move is not automatically the bravest
    •  How your current season affects your capacity
    •  Why comparison leaves out important parts of someone else’s story
    •  How manageable challenges help your brain build confidence
    •  A preview of why mild can be an intentional choice

    Today’s Brave Move

Think about something you want to do and decide what the different versions would look like for you.

What would make this a mild move? What would add some spice? What would push it into extra-hot territory?

There is no universal answer. Your job is to notice which level fits your capacity today and which choice is being influenced by comparison or the desire to prove yourself.

Send Julie a message and share your answer: Are you mild, spicy, or extra hot right now?

    Next-Episode Tease

Come back tomorrow as Julie continues the conversation and explains why choosing mild does not mean you are weak, afraid, or unwilling to grow. Mild can be an intentional way to build capacity and create the evidence your brain needs to feel safer taking the next step.
