Brave Moves: Confidence, Mindset & Business Growth for Women Entrepreneurs episodes

  • Tell People What You Need

Sometimes you don’t need advice. You don’t need someone to solve the problem or tell you what you should do next. You just need a little reassurance.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m talking about something I’ve noticed in my own relationships and even with past coaching clients. Sometimes people reach out without really saying what they need. They may want reassurance, a sounding board, advice, or simply someone who will listen.

The problem is that the person on the other end of the conversation has no idea which one you’re looking for.

And I’ve been on both sides of this. I’ve wanted to jump into coaching mode when someone really just wanted me to listen. I’ve also expected someone to somehow know what I needed without actually telling them.

So what if we got a little better at asking?

One simple question can change the entire conversation: “What do you need from me right now?”

And when you’re the one reaching out, try saying it clearly: “I don’t need you to fix this. I just need to talk.” Or, “I could really use some reassurance right now.”

    Your Brave Move

Pay attention to what you’re asking for from the people in your life.

The next time you reach out to someone, tell them what you need instead of hoping they’ll figure it out.

And think about someone who has offered you reassurance at a moment when you really needed it. Thank them today, and tell them specifically what their support meant to you.

  • What Your Camera Roll Can Teach You About Gratitude

What happens when you go looking for one photo and suddenly find yourself scrolling through years of your life?

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m talking about what happened when a simple trip through my camera roll brought me back to old trips, friendships, ordinary moments I had almost forgotten, and an unexpectedly precious video of my late brother.

I also share something I’ve been thinking about since returning from New York and hearing Pat Flynn talk about creation and showing more of ourselves in a world filled with AI. It made me realize how often I still hold back because of my own insecurities, even after years of putting myself out there.

And then I came home to my 14-year-old Maltese, Simba, not acting like himself. As we prepared to take him to the vet, those old photos and videos took on even more meaning.

If gratitude feels difficult or forced right now, I have a different idea for you.

    Open your camera roll.

Go back a year. Go back five years. Find a picture you forgot you took and spend a few minutes remembering what was happening outside the frame.

Your Brave Move: Choose one photo and write a few sentences about it. Where were you? Who was there? What do you remember that the picture doesn’t show?

You might be surprised by how much o

  • How to Sit with Self-Pity Without Bypassing it

Name the emotion: Say out loud that you feel hurt, disappointed, or lonely.

Set a time limit: Allow a clear window to vent or cry, then pivot.

Drop the judgment: Stop berating yourself for feeling sorry for your situation.

Locate the physical sensation: Notice where tightness or heavy sadness sits in your body.

Distinguish the pain: Separate genuine grief or fatigue from a recurring victim narrative.

  • You Don’t Need to Be Certain

Certainty feels good. It feels safe. It also has a sneaky way of keeping us stuck.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m talking about the decisions we keep postponing because we want to know exactly how things are going to turn out. The truth is, most meaningful choices do not come with a guarantee.

Sometimes we already have enough information. What we are really waiting for is reassurance that we will not regret the decision.

I talk about the difference between needing more information and simply wanting certainty, why action often gives us answers that overthinking cannot, and how to recognize when research has turned into procrastination.

I also share something I have had to learn myself: sometimes the answers come because we move.

Your Brave Move for today is simple. Think about one decision you have been circling and ask yourself:

Do I know enough to take the next step?

You do not need the whole plan. You just need enough information to make the next choice and trust yourself to respond to what happens after that.

Sometimes the only way to know what happens next is to move.

  • Maybe Your Goals Need to Be NICER

We’ve all heard of SMART goals. I’ve used them. I’ve taught them. And I’m not here to tell you they don’t work.

But what happens when a perfectly specific, measurable goal starts making you feel like you’re failing?

As we get closer to the end of the year, it’s easy to look back at the goals we set months ago and start focusing on everything we haven’t accomplished. We see the gap instead of the progress. We start telling ourselves we should be further along.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m sharing a different approach to goal setting that I discovered through Ali Abdaal’s book Feel-Good Productivity: NICE goals.

    NICE stands for:

N – Near-term: Focus on what you can do today, this week, or in the immediate future instead of becoming overwhelmed by the entire journey.

I – Input-based: Pay attention to the actions and behaviors you can take rather than measuring yourself only by the final result.

C – Controllable: Build goals around what is actually within your control. You can send the pitch, make the offer, take the walk, or do the work. You cannot always control what happens afterward.

E – Energizing: Ask how you can make the process feel better. Can you bring in more play, choice, connection, support, or enjoyment?

We’ll also talk about the difference between an outcome like “I want five new clients” and an input like “I’m going to reach out to five potential clients this week.”

    That distinction matters.

You can influence an outcome, but you can't always control it.

So if you're heading toward the end of the year feeling behind, this episode is your invitation to stop using your goals as evidence against yourself.

You don't necessarily need to abandon the goal or lower your expectations.

You might simply need to be a little NICER about how you get there.

    Your Brave Move

Choose one goal that has started to feel heavy and run it through the NICE framework:

Is there a near-term step you can take?

Can you turn the goal into an input or behavior?

Is that behavior within your control?

How could you make the process more energizing?

Your goal can still matter without making yourself miserable trying to achieve it.

    In This Episode

    • What SMART goals are and where they can become challenging
    • The NICE goal-setting framework from Feel-Good Productivity
    • Why input-based goals can reduce the pressure we put on ourselves
    • The difference between influence and control
    • How small behaviors contribute to bigger outcomes
    • Why enjoyment and energy belong in conversations about productivity
    • How to rethink your goals as you approach the end of the year
    • A simple exercise for turning a heavy goal into a NICE goal

  • How to Be There When Someone Is Overwhelmed

How to Help Someone Calm Down: Co-Regulation with Friends and Family

Have you ever sat with someone who was crying and felt pressure to find the right words? A scene in Ted Lasso reminded me that sometimes the most helpful thing we can offer is our steady presence.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I talk about co-regulation: how a calm, responsive person can help someone feel supported while they’re overwhelmed. We’ll look at why advice can wait, how to ask what your friend or family member needs, and what it means to hold space while respecting your own limits.

    What you’ll hear:

    • What co-regulation means in everyday life
    • Why we often rush to fix someone else’s feelings
    • Simple ways to offer support when someone is upset
    • Why asking “Would you like me to sit with you?” can be more useful than guessing
    • How to recognize when you need support, too

Your Brave Move: The next time someone you care about is upset, pause before offering a solution. Ask what would help, and if they want company, give them time to feel what they’re feeling.

  • We Don’t Have to Keep Doing It This Way - The Rules You’re Allowed to Stop Following

How many rules are you still following that you never actually chose?

Maybe you learned that family comes first no matter how they treat you. Maybe ending a decades-long friendship feels wrong simply because of your history together. Perhaps you've been taught that being exhausted means you're working hard enough, saying no makes you selfish, or keeping the peace is more important than speaking up.

At some point, we have to ask ourselves: Do I actually believe this, or have I just been carrying it?

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m reflecting on a post I saw from Tiny Buddha about some of the things our generation has begun leaving behind. It made me think about how many expectations we inherit from our families, culture, workplaces, and communities without ever consciously deciding whether we want them.

This isn't about blaming our parents or pretending our generation has everything figured out. They inherited their own set of rules, too. It's about recognizing that adulthood gives us the opportunity to decide what still belongs in our lives and what doesn't.

Sometimes that means setting boundaries with family. It might mean allowing an old friendship to end or leaving a relationship that is hurting you. It can mean letting your children decide who gets access to their bodies instead of requiring affection because someone is a relative.

And sometimes it's much simpler. You stop feeling guilty about resting. You say what you actually think. You make a career decision based on the life you want instead of the life someone else imagined for you.

One of the hardest parts is that changing an old pattern can make other people uncomfortable, particularly when they benefited from the version of you who rarely said no.

That doesn't automatically mean your new choice is wrong.

    Your Brave Move

    Ask yourself:

What is one rule I'm still following that I never actually chose?

    Where did you learn it?

    Do you still believe it?

And if you don't, what might change if you stopped organizing your life around it?

You can appreciate where you came from without having to repeat everything you inherited.

  • Can You Actually Rewire Your Brain?

We hear people talk about “rewiring your brain” all the time, but what does that actually mean? And can we really change thought patterns and behaviors that have been with us for years?

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m digging into neuroplasticity and what it tells us about our ability to change. Our brains continue to adapt based on our experiences and the things we repeatedly do. That matters when you start thinking about some of the thoughts and reactions that have become so familiar we barely notice them anymore.

Maybe you automatically assume you're not qualified when an opportunity comes along. Maybe one unanswered email sends you into a story about what you've done wrong. Maybe you've spent years describing yourself as someone who procrastinates, isn't confident, or never follows through.

At some point, a pattern we've practiced can start to feel like part of our personality.

But changing it doesn't require waking up tomorrow as an entirely different person.

Sometimes the beginning is simply catching yourself in the moment and recognizing, “Oh, there I go again.”

We’ll talk about why old patterns can return even when you’ve been working hard to change them, how small experiences give your brain new information, and why falling back into an old response doesn't erase the progress you've already made.

One idea I keep coming back to is this: Sometimes the real change is how quickly we come back.

    Your Brave Move

Think about one thought or behavior that keeps showing up in your life, especially one you've started describing as “just how I am.”

    Get curious about it.

How long have you been practicing that response? When does it tend to show up? The next time you notice it happening, see if you can choose one slightly different response.

You don't have to fix yourself. Just catch the pattern once and give yourself another option.

Then see what happens when you keep practicing.

  • Maybe You Don’t Need More Talent. You Need More Reps

What if the thing holding you back isn’t a lack of talent?

Maybe you’re not bad at sales. Maybe you haven’t had enough conversations yet. Maybe you’re not terrible on camera. Maybe you’re simply inexperienced. Maybe confidence isn’t something you need to find before you begin. Maybe it’s something you build by collecting evidence that you can do hard and unfamiliar things.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m exploring an idea inspired by Geoff Colvin’s book Talent Is Overrated: getting better isn’t simply about natural ability. How we practice matters.

We often look at someone who is great at speaking, selling, podcasting, writing, or running a business and assume they were somehow born knowing how to do it. What we don’t see are all the awkward attempts, small audiences, unanswered pitches, offers that didn’t sell, and repetitions that helped them develop the skills we now admire.

We also talk about deliberate practice, which is different from simply doing the same thing repeatedly. It means noticing where you struggle, working on that specific skill, getting feedback, adjusting, and trying again.

If you’ve been waiting until you feel confident or “good enough” before you take your next step, this episode is your reminder that you might have the equation backward.

    In This Episode

    • Why we often mistake experience for natural talent
    • How “I’m not good at this” can become an identity that keeps us stuck
    • What deliberate practice actually looks like in business and everyday life
    • Why discomfort doesn’t necessarily mean you’re doing something wrong
    • How smaller repetitions can help you build skills without overwhelming yourself
    • Why confidence often comes from evidence and experience, not preparation
    • How to stop judging your early attempts and start learning from them

    Your Brave Move

Think about one thing you keep telling yourself you’re “not good at.”

    Then ask:

What would one deliberate repetition look like today?

Make the video. Have the conversation. Practice the opening of your presentation. Make the ask. Pitch the podcast. Talk about your offer.

Then, instead of judging how you did, study it.

What worked? What felt uncomfortable? What could you adjust next time?

You don’t have to become good enough before you begin.

Sometimes beginning is exactly how you become good.

  • I Don’t Feel My Age: Making Peace With Getting Older

Have you ever said your age out loud and thought, “Wait…how did THAT happen?”

Getting older is inevitable, but our relationship with aging can get complicated. There are the physical changes, the aches and pains, the doctor appointments, watching our parents age, and that growing awareness that time isn’t unlimited. Then there’s the pressure, especially for women, to somehow keep getting older without ever actually looking older.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m talking about what happens when we stop treating aging like something we need to fight and start looking at what it can give us.

Because while getting older comes with some uncomfortable realities, it also brings perspective. We begin to recognize what matters, what we’re no longer willing to tolerate, and how precious our time really is.

I also explore that strange disconnect between the number on our birthday cake and the age we actually feel inside. The younger versions of us haven’t disappeared. They’ve simply lived more life, made more mistakes, loved more people, learned more lessons, and hopefully stopped caring quite so much about things that never deserved our energy in the first place.

Most importantly, I don’t want to spend this decade wishing I looked like I did in the last one, only to arrive at the next decade wishing I had appreciated who I was today.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • Why aging can bring up fear, grief, and anxiety
    • The pressure women feel to stay youthful
    • Why realizing that time is limited can actually bring clarity
    • The difference between our chronological age and how old we feel
    • Appreciating the person you are now instead of constantly looking backward
    • Why getting older can help us become more intentional about how we spend our time

    Your Brave Move

    Ask yourself:

If I stopped being afraid of getting older, what would I do differently with the age I am right now?

Maybe you’d wear the thing you think you’re “too old” to wear. Maybe you’d finally take the trip, start something new, change direction, or stop waiting for a younger, thinner, less tired, more organized version of yourself to start living.

You don’t have to outrun the calendar.

    You get to keep becoming.
