Brave Moves: Confidence, Mindset & Business Growth for Women Entrepreneurs episodes

  • If You Could Have One Thing Back, What Would It Be?

If someone handed you a box containing everything you've ever lost, what would you look for first?

Would it be something you owned, a missed opportunity, a friendship, or one more conversation with someone you love?

In this episode of Brave Moves, Julie DeLucca-Collins explores three thought-provoking questions about loss, connection, and what matters most in life.

After discovering old family videos of her late brother, Julie reflects on how ordinary moments can become some of our most treasured memories. From imperfect family recordings to conversations we wish we could have again, she shares why paying attention to the people and experiences in our lives matters.

You'll also consider a question that might change how you approach your relationships: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, would you choose a destination or a person?

    What You'll Hear:

    • What the things we miss can reveal about our values
    • Why ordinary moments often become our most meaningful memories
    • How grief and nostalgia can change our perspective on everyday life
    • Why we sometimes postpone meaningful connections
    • How small habits can help us become more intentional in our relationships
    • A simple Brave Move to help you appreciate what matters today

  • What If You’re NOT a Highly Sensitive Person?

In the last episode of Brave Moves, we talked about Highly Sensitive People. But that got me wondering: What about everybody else?

If sensory processing sensitivity exists on a spectrum, what does everyday life look like for someone who falls toward the lower end?

And no, being less sensitive doesn't mean you're insensitive, uncaring, or lacking empathy.

In this episode, we're looking at why two people can walk into the exact same crowded restaurant, attend the same event, or work in the same busy office and have completely different reactions.

One person is thinking, “This is way too loud.”

The other is wondering, “What noise?”

Understanding those differences can help us stop assuming that everyone experiences the world the same way we do. It can also explain some of those little conflicts we have with partners, friends, family members, and coworkers.

    What You'll Hear

    • What it can mean to be lower in sensory processing sensitivity
    • Why lower sensitivity doesn't mean being emotionally insensitive
    • How different thresholds for stimulation show up in everyday life
    • Some potential advantages of being less affected by busy or stimulating environments
    • Why high sensitivity and high sensation seeking aren't necessarily opposites
    • How differences in sensitivity can create misunderstandings in relationships
    • Why understanding your own sensitivity should give you more choices, rather than another label

    Your Brave Move

Think about someone in your life who seems to have a very different tolerance for stimulation than you do.

Maybe they think the restaurant is too loud when you barely notice it. Maybe they need to leave the party when you're ready to keep going. Or perhaps you're the one craving quiet while they seem completely energized.

Instead of deciding who's right, ask them:

“What does this feel like for you?”

Then listen without comparing their experience to yours.

Your experience of the world isn't universal, and understanding that can make a big difference in how we communicate with the people around us.

  • Are You a Highly Sensitive Person?

Have you ever been told you're “too sensitive”?

Maybe you notice the mood in a room before anyone says a word. Loud environments wear you out. You pick up on small changes in people's behavior, or you need some quiet after a busy day even when you genuinely enjoyed yourself.

You may simply process your environment more deeply than other people do.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I'm exploring what it really means to be a Highly Sensitive Person, or HSP, and the research behind what's known as sensory processing sensitivity.

Being highly sensitive isn't a diagnosis or something you need to fix. It can come with real advantages, including noticing subtleties, deeper processing, and greater responsiveness to what's happening around you. It can also mean becoming overstimulated more easily.

The goal isn't to build your life around a label. It's to understand yourself well enough to recognize what drains you, what brings out your best, and how to work with your sensitivity rather than constantly fighting it.

    What You'll Hear

    • What researchers mean by sensory processing sensitivity
    • Why being highly sensitive isn't a mental health diagnosis
    • How high sensitivity can show up at work, in relationships, and in everyday situations
    • Some of the advantages that can come with noticing and processing more information
    • Why busy, noisy, or demanding environments may become overwhelming more quickly
    • How supportive environments may have an especially positive effect on highly sensitive people
    • Why understanding your sensitivity shouldn't become an excuse to make your life smaller

    Your Brave Move

For the next few days, simply pay attention.

    Ask yourself:

    What tends to overwhelm me?

What environments seem to bring out the best in me?

You don't have to immediately change anything or decide whether you're officially an HSP. Just notice your patterns.

Self-awareness gives you information you can use to make better choices about how you work, rest, communicate, and take care of yourself.

And remember: use the information. Don't let the label use you.

If this episode has you curious about high sensitivity, a great place to start is psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron's book, The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You. Her work helped introduce the concept of the Highly Sensitive Person to a much wider audience.

  • What Are You Really Holding Onto?

Have you ever been completely finished with something, yet somehow it still has a hold on you?

A relationship ended years ago. The argument is over. The opportunity passed. You made the decision and moved on. Then something brings it all rushing back, and suddenly you're replaying the same story again.

Sometimes what we're struggling to release isn't the memory itself. It's the meaning we attached to what happened.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I'm talking about why letting go can feel so difficult, how rumination can keep us circling the same experience, and what can happen when we separate the facts of what happened from the conclusions we made about ourselves because of it.

Maybe the relationship ended and somewhere along the way that became, “I'm not worth staying for.”

Maybe the business failed, and that became, “I'm terrible at this.”

Maybe someone betrayed you, and the story became, “I can't trust anyone.”

The past doesn't change, but we can reconsider the meaning we've allowed it to carry into our present.

    What You'll Hear

    • Why remembering something and continuing to carry its emotional meaning are different
    • How rumination can make us feel like we're processing something when we're actually replaying it
    • A simple question to uncover the belief hiding underneath a painful experience
    • How to reconsider an old conclusion using what you know about yourself today
    • Why a physical act of release can help you mark the end of a chapter
    • Three practical strategies for loosening the grip of something you've been carrying

    Your Brave Move

Choose one experience that still carries some emotional weight. Start with something manageable rather than the most painful experience of your life.

    Complete these two sentences:

    What happened was __________.

What I made it mean was __________.

Now look at that second sentence.

Is it still true? Does that belief still belong in your life today?

If it doesn't, decide what you want the experience to mean from where you're standing now. Then choose one small action that represents your decision to stop carrying it in the same way.

You don't have to erase your past. You get to decide how much authority it has over your present.

  • Can You Be Alone With Your Own Thoughts?

Can You Be Alone With Your Own Thoughts?

When was the last time you had absolutely nothing to do?

No phone. No podcast. No music. No scrolling. Just you and your thoughts.

In a fascinating University of Virginia-led study, participants were asked to spend a short period of time alone with their thoughts. In one experiment, 67% of the men and 25% of the women chose to give themselves at least one mild electric shock rather than simply sit there. Even more surprising, they had previously said they would pay money to avoid that same shock.

Apparently, being alone with ourselves can get uncomfortable pretty quickly.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m exploring our growing discomfort with empty space and what might happen when we stop filling every available moment with something to consume.

We reach for our phones while standing in line. We put on a podcast while walking. We check email while waiting for an appointment. Sometimes we barely give our minds a chance to wander before we hand them something else to pay attention to.

But those quiet moments can matter. They give us space to notice what we’re thinking, allow our minds to wander, and sometimes hear the thoughts that have been buried underneath all that noise.

And yes, I fully appreciate the irony of telling you this while you’re listening to a podcast.

    What You’ll Hear

    • What researchers discovered when people were asked to sit alone with their thoughts
    • Why boredom and solitude can feel surprisingly uncomfortable
    • How constantly reaching for stimulation can become automatic
    • The difference between solitude and loneliness
    • Why letting your mind wander may support creative thinking
    • A simple way to begin practicing intentional quiet without turning it into another thing you have to be good at

    Your Brave Move

Give yourself five minutes without consuming anything.

No phone. No music. No podcast, including this one.

Take a walk, drink your coffee, sit outside, or stare out the window.

Pay attention to what happens. If you instinctively reach for your phone, notice it without judging yourself. Then give your mind permission to go wherever it wants to go.

You might be surprised by what has been waiting for a little quiet.

    Before You Go

If Brave Moves gives you something to think about, follow the show so you don't miss the next episode and share this one with someone who could use a little more quiet in their life.

And if you try the five-minute challenge, come find me on social media and tell me how it went. Was it peaceful? Uncomfortable? Did you make it five minutes without reaching for your phone?

    I really want to know.

And hopefully, you won't need an electric shock to get through it.

  • Tell People What You Need

Sometimes you don’t need advice. You don’t need someone to solve the problem or tell you what you should do next. You just need a little reassurance.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m talking about something I’ve noticed in my own relationships and even with past coaching clients. Sometimes people reach out without really saying what they need. They may want reassurance, a sounding board, advice, or simply someone who will listen.

The problem is that the person on the other end of the conversation has no idea which one you’re looking for.

And I’ve been on both sides of this. I’ve wanted to jump into coaching mode when someone really just wanted me to listen. I’ve also expected someone to somehow know what I needed without actually telling them.

So what if we got a little better at asking?

One simple question can change the entire conversation: “What do you need from me right now?”

And when you’re the one reaching out, try saying it clearly: “I don’t need you to fix this. I just need to talk.” Or, “I could really use some reassurance right now.”

    Your Brave Move

Pay attention to what you’re asking for from the people in your life.

The next time you reach out to someone, tell them what you need instead of hoping they’ll figure it out.

And think about someone who has offered you reassurance at a moment when you really needed it. Thank them today, and tell them specifically what their support meant to you.

  • What Your Camera Roll Can Teach You About Gratitude

What happens when you go looking for one photo and suddenly find yourself scrolling through years of your life?

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m talking about what happened when a simple trip through my camera roll brought me back to old trips, friendships, ordinary moments I had almost forgotten, and an unexpectedly precious video of my late brother.

I also share something I’ve been thinking about since returning from New York and hearing Pat Flynn talk about creation and showing more of ourselves in a world filled with AI. It made me realize how often I still hold back because of my own insecurities, even after years of putting myself out there.

And then I came home to my 14-year-old Maltese, Simba, not acting like himself. As we prepared to take him to the vet, those old photos and videos took on even more meaning.

If gratitude feels difficult or forced right now, I have a different idea for you.

    Open your camera roll.

Go back a year. Go back five years. Find a picture you forgot you took and spend a few minutes remembering what was happening outside the frame.

Your Brave Move: Choose one photo and write a few sentences about it. Where were you? Who was there? What do you remember that the picture doesn’t show?

Name the emotion: Say out loud that you feel hurt, disappointed, or lonely.

Set a time limit: Allow a clear window to vent or cry, then pivot.

  • You Don’t Need to Be Certain

Certainty feels good. It feels safe. It also has a sneaky way of keeping us stuck.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m talking about the decisions we keep postponing because we want to know exactly how things are going to turn out. The truth is, most meaningful choices do not come with a guarantee.

Sometimes we already have enough information. What we are really waiting for is reassurance that we will not regret the decision.

I talk about the difference between needing more information and simply wanting certainty, why action often gives us answers that overthinking cannot, and how to recognize when research has turned into procrastination.

I also share something I have had to learn myself: sometimes the answers come because we move.

Your Brave Move for today is simple. Think about one decision you have been circling and ask yourself:

Do I know enough to take the next step?

You do not need the whole plan. You just need enough information to make the next choice and trust yourself to respond to what happens after that.

Sometimes the only way to know what happens next is to move.

  • Maybe Your Goals Need to Be NICER

We’ve all heard of SMART goals. I’ve used them. I’ve taught them. And I’m not here to tell you they don’t work.

But what happens when a perfectly specific, measurable goal starts making you feel like you’re failing?

As we get closer to the end of the year, it’s easy to look back at the goals we set months ago and start focusing on everything we haven’t accomplished. We see the gap instead of the progress. We start telling ourselves we should be further along.

In this episode of Brave Moves, I’m sharing a different approach to goal setting that I discovered through Ali Abdaal’s book Feel-Good Productivity: NICE goals.

    NICE stands for:

N – Near-term: Focus on what you can do today, this week, or in the immediate future instead of becoming overwhelmed by the entire journey.

I – Input-based: Pay attention to the actions and behaviors you can take rather than measuring yourself only by the final result.

C – Controllable: Build goals around what is actually within your control. You can send the pitch, make the offer, take the walk, or do the work. You cannot always control what happens afterward.

E – Energizing: Ask how you can make the process feel better. Can you bring in more play, choice, connection, support, or enjoyment?

We’ll also talk about the difference between an outcome like “I want five new clients” and an input like “I’m going to reach out to five potential clients this week.”

    That distinction matters.

You can influence an outcome, but you can't always control it.

So if you're heading toward the end of the year feeling behind, this episode is your invitation to stop using your goals as evidence against yourself.

You don't necessarily need to abandon the goal or lower your expectations.

You might simply need to be a little NICER about how you get there.

    Your Brave Move

Choose one goal that has started to feel heavy and run it through the NICE framework:

Is there a near-term step you can take?

Can you turn the goal into an input or behavior?

Is that behavior within your control?

How could you make the process more energizing?

Your goal can still matter without making yourself miserable trying to achieve it.

    In This Episode

    • What SMART goals are and where they can become challenging
    • The NICE goal-setting framework from Feel-Good Productivity
    • Why input-based goals can reduce the pressure we put on ourselves
    • The difference between influence and control
    • How small behaviors contribute to bigger outcomes
    • Why enjoyment and energy belong in conversations about productivity
    • How to rethink your goals as you approach the end of the year
