I’m not suggesting that everyone has to hit rock bottom before they can rise, but the truth is that darkness and light coexist: there will always be dark and always be light moments in our lives. In fact, it’s hard to see the flame of a candle on a sunny day; it’s those moments of darkness that really allow our light to shine.

Instead of overwhelming us, darkness can spur us on, pushing us away from the “shoulds” and the “musts” toward the path less followed, of our individual truth:

• By accepting both the dark and the light, we begin to tackle our resistance: the ways in which we stand in the way of ourselves, our beauty and our gifts;
• We see the strength in surrendering, in developing acceptance and trust; 
• We begin to understand the role of the sacred clowns and haters in our lives – those disrupting contrarians who challenge us. 

'To the person who uses metal straws to save fish but consumes animals, I’d like to say thank you. To the vegan who isn’t aware of our homelessness problem, thank you. To the climate change activists who aren’t attentive to fast fashion, thank you. To the girl who gives her old clothes to the disadvantaged but isn’t educated on sex trafficking, thank you. To the guy who picks up rubbish on his way home from a surf but isn’t well-informed about male suicide rates, thank you. To the students that stand up for bullying but are unaware of the constant domestic violence epidemic, thank you.

To the peace activists, feminists, animal adopters, teachers, volunteers, foster carers, recyclers, givers, doers and believers, I say thank you.

We are all on a different path and we all see through different eyes. Current world issues that you are passionate about, aren’t always what other people are trying to change… and that’s okay.

It’s not everyone’s job to save every part of the world but it is everyone’s responsibility to thank every person who is doing THEIR part to save the world. Don’t critic, just appreciate. Don’t judge, just educate. We’re all trying our best.

Accepting both the dark and the light – dropping resistance

Resistance is an unconscious barrier with which we block our power. Resistance is when we play small and fail to show up for ourselves. It is how we deny ourselves the opportunities that are out there, waiting for us. Resistance prompts us to say, “I can’t”, “I shouldn’t” and “I won’t” – even at the risk of our own lives.
