Carrie Wilkerson is a best selling author, international speaker, award winning podcaster and sought-after radio guest. She’s appeared many times on TV, featured on CNN and Fox Business News.
She’s been named a top business influencer by Forbes magazine, and she’s consulted for John Maxwell, Zig Ziglar and other influential business leaders.
She’s lost over 100 lbs., paid off a mountain of debt, overcome depression.
Carrie is a mother of four wonderful children, and she helps ordinary people lead extraordinary lives.
In regards to being a parentpreneur, Carrie says it’s rarely about the money. She believes it’s about the flexibility and the opportunity to allow our kids to explore things and activities. She encourages parents to support their children in one area of “giftedness”, but also adds that there are no limits if they work hard and persevere.
Carrie’s junior English teacher hired her for her first paid performance, in singing, by having her be the entertainment for an event. Receiving the payment was validation for her.
“Validation is huge. Do we need the medal? Do we need the tangible proof? Not necessarily…”
Carrie hopes people can learn from her various struggles.
“I would love for you to learn from my scars, so that you don’t have to learn this in blood”
She notes that she doesn’t expect anything from her kids that she wouldn’t do herself.
Carries parents are big entrepreneurial supporters. Her mom is an entrepreneur herself, and her dad was in the military and a preacher but has an entrepreneurial mindset.
Her new social media hash tag is “#CarrieOn”, and she’s incorporating it into her new book on the topic of resilience.
“We can whine about life, or we can figure it out and “win” about it”
Regarding grit, she says that every entrepreneurial venture has the potential to work if you are persistent and stick with it.
“We must take those things that we’re currently using as an excuse, and turn them into our reasons why; that’s the difference between the people that succeed, or give up.”
Carries gives the listeners advice on how to pick themselves up when they are feeling down.
She has a huge corkboard on her “happy wall”, with pictures that her kids have drawn, notes from clients, postcards, printout of positive tweets about her and more. “When I look up, I see affirmation of my work”She also keeps an email file that she calls her “happy file” with testimonials and encouraging words from others. “We need to shower ourselves with positivity when we need to be renewed”Carrie pays attention to how she’s fuelling her body (carbs and soda bring her down)She advises that people know their patterns of energy, meaning what time of day is best for you to operate on the tasks that require the most energyCarrie takes in a daily dose of faith. For non-religious individuals, reading positive thinking material and writing in a gratitude journal can be helpful in renewing your energy.“These are all ways to feed your brain, your heart and your spirit, so you’re not tapped and drained.”
Carrie explains the importance of being extra careful about whom you’re spending your time with. If you’re an entrepreneur who has children, connect with other parents who are business people.
“You need to find your people”
Carrie has studied Zig Ziglar’s work since she was in 7th grade and “didn’t have a dime.” Years later, she phoned his office in Dallas and spoke with his son, Tom, who invited her to visit. She ended up being asked to speak at one of their events, which lead to an informal mentoring relationship.
If you can’t afford a mentor, you can buy a book or listen to free podcasts.
“Pick a mentor who resonates with your values and get their voice in your head”
Carrie cites her dad as her superhero growing up.
“I felt like my dad could do anything, and I still feel that way”
"We shower with water when we want to be clean:
SHOWER YOURSELF WITH POSITIVITY TO BE RENEWED."
