LiFT’s company motto is, “Be a blessing,” and a blessing Rory is to everyone she meets.

Erica Smith and her husband, Matt.
Jenny Mathews, contributing writer
Erica Smith, M.D., is an OB/GYN with Intermountain Budge Clinic OB/GYN and loves her job. In her own words, “What’s the difference between a 40-hour-work week and a 50-hour-work week if you love every minute of what you do?” Cache Valley was appealing to her and her husband, Matt, due to the wide range of outdoor activities here, like fly fishing and hiking.
In this episode, we discuss women’s health topics from puberty to menopause, pregnancy, loss, childbirth, breastfeeding, and postpartum depression. Doctor Smith values the opportunities that her occupation gives her, like talking with young girls about their bodies and helping them feel more comfortable and educated about the process of becoming a woman; counseling grieving parents through loss or disappointment; and often being the one to share the best day of a woman’s life as she brings a new baby into the world.
Special thanks to Stacked at 31 N. Main and this week to Intermountain Budge Clinic OB/GYN for sponsoring this episode.

The Goodrich Family
Jenny Mathews, contributing writer
Kent Goodrich, a local highway patrol trooper, and his wife, Charity, a licensed clinical mental health counselor speak about a range of relevant topics, including raising responsible citizens, mental health, school shootings, the #metoo movement, adoption, and more. They are devoted parents of five adopted children and have many dedicated years of experience helping our community.
Kent and Charity speak candidly and sensibly, offering advice about treating people—adults and children—with respect and kindness especially when they make mistakes, recognizing when our child may need professional help, and when we might be getting in the way of our child’s progress. We talk about the increasing disconnect between reality and the virtual online world the rising generation has grown up with, and how to thrive in a world environment that can be kind of intimidating and scary.

The Schramm Family
Jenny Mathews, contributing writer
Dr. David Schramm or “Dr. Dave” is an Assistant Professor and Family Life Extension Specialist in the Department of Family, Consumer and Human Development at Utah State University. He and his wife, Jamie, share their experience and wisdom on how to make real connections in marriage and family relationships, create meaningful rituals rather than routines, and laugh about what it’s like to be married to a marriage expert! Parents to four children, including three teenage daughters, the Schramms confess that there are plenty of times when even they make mistakes, but that the key is that genuine connection and trust we cultivate in relationships and the effort we make to keep trying — focusing on people rather than problems.
Dr. Dave discusses with us advice for husbands, wives, and parents on such topics as talking to your kids about sex, understanding your partner better, non-traditional families, and strategic parenting strategies. He also lays out some of the warning signs that your child or your marriage may need some intervention and shares many of the resources available locally and online. Megan Ostler
Michelle Alley
Jenny Mathews, contributing writer
In this episode, we interview two local moms, Megan Ostler and Michelle Alley. Megan is a dietitian, and Michelle is a nutritionist. Both are passionate about food and work for iFIT. One day while at work, they had an idea to test out some of the more popular diets and share their journey on the iFIT blog. The six diets they’re testing are as Whole 30, Ketogenic, Paleo, Vegan, Mediterranean, and a cleanse. Along with tracking their weight and evaluating all the pros and cons of each diet, Megan and Michelle have decided to track their feelings, behaviors and thoughts in an effort to test their theory that dieting can sometimes cause an unhealthy relationship with food and sometimes even risky thoughts and behaviors. In this episode, we discuss how to have a healthy mindset about food, weight, intuitive eating and more. They share some fantastic advice on the food struggle with children and how to reduce all the noise about what foods are good, bad, “clean” or “junk.” You can follow Megan and Michelle’s progress and more at blog.ifit.com.

The Karren family
Tara Bone, contributing writer
Rusty and HollyJo Karren of Richmond were overjoyed when their second son, Easten, was born on June 6, 2007, but their joy turned to heartache when Easten was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a rare liver disease that required something the family had never considered — an organ transplant.
On August 13, 2012, the call came that a suitable donor match was available from a 5-year-old male. The Karrens went to Salt Lake to prepare and spend a long night. The transplant took only three hours. Everything went as planned, and Easten went home three days later.
Since Easten’s transplant, the Karren family has continued to be affected by organ donation. A cousin’s daughter received a heart transplant, but died following the transplant so the family chose to donate her organs to others who were waiting. Another cousin’s daughter who died from cancer wasn’t able to donate her organs because of chemotherapy treatments, but her mother chose to give life and honor her daughter by donating one of her kidneys.
For the Karrens, these dramatic experiences on both sides of organ donation have ignited a passion for organ donation advocacy and a desire to generate awareness about how organ donation changes lives. HollyJo encourages families to talk about organ donation, even though it can be an uncomfortable topic.
HollyJo’s wish is to touch just one person, to reach something inside of them and to spark a conversation about organ donation. “Once you start the conversation, you will be amazed at those surrounding you that know someone or lost someone they loved,” HollyJo said. “In our own community, we can help one another by simply saying ‘yes, I want to be an organ donor.’”
