This Sunday at 2 a.m., clocks “spring forward” one hour, ushering in more evening sunlight for the months ahead.

Most modern devices — including smartphones, tablets, computers, and many smart home clocks — will update automatically. However, older clocks and many vehicle clocks will need to be adjusted manually.

The practice of springing forward in the spring and falling back in the fall is overseen by the U.S. Department of Transportation and was originally intended to save energy. Daylight Saving Time (DST) was first used during World War I and World War II, but the U.S. didn’t adopt a nationwide standard until the Uniform Time Act of 1966.

In 2007, DST was expanded to cover a larger portion of the year—now about 65% of the year.

Not everyone agrees that DST saves energy. While some studies show it reduces lighting usage, increased heating and air-conditioning often offset the savings.

Hawaii, most of Arizona, and some U.S. territories do not observe Daylight Saving Time.

Public safety officials also recommend using this opportunity to replace the battery in your smoke alarm.

February marks National Career and Technical Education Month, a time set aside to recognize the importance of career-focused programs in preparing students for future success. As the month comes to a close, the Kosciusko Attala Career and Technical Center (KACTC) is celebrating the achievements of its students, staff, and community partners.

Throughout the month, students at KACTC demonstrated leadership, dedication, and a strong commitment to developing real-world skills designed to prepare them for careers and continued education. Instructors and administrators say the center’s hands-on learning environment helps students build confidence while gaining valuable experience across a wide range of technical fields.

School officials also expressed appreciation for the teachers and administrators whose daily efforts help make the programs successful. Their guidance and support play a vital role in creating an environment where students are encouraged to grow and excel.

In addition, KACTC recognized several community partners for their continued support. Businesses and organizations including Angel Albin of State Farm, Ivey’s Mechanical, Prairie Farms, Walmart, and Jack’s provided donations and encouragement throughout the month. Officials say those partnerships help strengthen career and technical education opportunities for students across the community.

As Career and Technical Education Month concludes, KACTC leaders say they remain committed to providing students with the tools, training, and support needed to prepare for life beyond the classroom.

Food Truck Frenzy is returning to downtown Kosciusko.

Put on by The Kosciusko-Attala Partnership, this year’s even, sponsored by Century HVAC, is planned for Monday, March 16 from  3:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

Food Truck Frenzy has become a popular event in downtown Kosciusko over the years. Organizers say the event is designed to provide an evening of dining and entertainment for residents and visitors alike.

The vendor entry fee is $100 for Chamber members and $200 for non-members.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–Two fires got out of hand Saturday afternoon in Attala County in separate instances, in different parts of the county, but close to the same time.

The first was just after 1 p.m. on Attala Rd. 2127 near McCool. That fire was contained within a few minutes.

A second fire call came in about 1:20 p.m., with the fire in the woods on Hwy. 43 north, near the intersection with Attala Rd. 3122.

That was reported as a burn that got out of control.

The person who called it in told dispatchers that the fire was well into the woods and that the firefighters might have a stough time getting eqipment to where it was. Assistance was requested from the Miss. Forestry Commission.

The fire proved to be a difficult one to fight, with extra firefighters and trucks called in two hours after the fire was dispatched.

More fires

Meanwhile, another fire was reported about 1:30 p.m., on Attala Rd. 1008 in the Williamsville area near a shop in the Southpoint subdivision. That fire was contained within a few minutes.

Central and Sallis volunteers were called out to a fire on Attala Rd. 4116 at 2:48 p.m. It was called in as a burn that was out of control, with no structures in danger.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–People at America’s Best Value on Veterans Memorial Parkway in Kosciusko reported that a pickup truck caused havoc Saturday morning by backing into a nother vehicle, which hit a room at the motel.

It was not clear of the damage was caused intentionally, but the Chevy truck left the scene.

That happened just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

No injuries were reported.

Witnesses reported the truck went south, eventually down Huntington St., where police caught up to it.

It wasn’t clear if an arrest was made.

The Kosciusko Fire Dept. was called to the motel to assess whether there was substantial structural damage.

LOUISVILLE, Miss.–The woman killed about 6 a.m. in what Winston County authorities say was a murder, has been ID’d as Rebecca Leann Lyons, 33, of Neshoba County.

Lyons was pronounced dead shortly after authorites arrived on scene at Winston Medical Center. Lyons had been brought there from Hwy. 397.

Sheriff Mike Perkins tells WTVA her body was found in a car, but he believes Lyons was beaten to death.

A person of interest is in custody, but on in an unrelated incident.

The incident is being investigated by the Winston County Sheriff’s Dept., Kemper County Sheriff’s Dept. and the Miss. Band of Choctaw Indians Dept. of Public Safety,
