The Kosciusko School District Board of Education has selected Dr. Danya Turner as the district’s next superintendent.

The board voted unanimously during a special called meeting Thursday evening to appoint Turner, who currently serves as principal of Louisville High School.

Turner brings more than two decades of experience in education and is known for his focus on academic excellence, student achievement, and positive school culture. Since becoming principal at Louisville High School in 2020, he has led efforts to strengthen academic performance while fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Under his leadership, the school has emphasized high expectations for both academics and behavior, while building strong relationships among students, staff, and families. His work has centered on strategic planning, curriculum development, and data-driven instruction to promote continuous improvement.

Turner holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and supervision from the University of Phoenix, a bachelor’s degree from Liberty University, and an associate’s degree from Holmes Community College. He is currently completing his Doctor of Education degree at Mississippi State University, with graduation expected in May 2026.

In addition to his professional background, Turner is deeply involved in his community. He and his wife, Lassandra, have been married for 26 years and have three sons: Donavan, Devean, and Mitchell.

School officials say they are confident Turner’s leadership will help guide the district forward and continue building on its commitment to academic success and student growth.

Mississippi’s flu rate has crept slightly higher but there are bigger problems in other parts of the country.  The CDC says ten states now have more flu activity in Mississippi.  That includes two of our neighbors, Louisiana and Alabama.   In Mississippi, doctors who report to the State Health Department say they treated more than 16,000 patients during the week ending February 14th, almost 900 of whom had flu-like symptoms for a flu rate of 5.4 per cent.  And while that’s the highest so far this season, it’s a lot lower than what we were seeing at this time last year.

Two of the local public health districts saw decreases in their flu rates with the district which includes Attala, Holmes, Carroll and Montgomery counties and much of the Delta dropping under 11 per cent.  The district which includes Leake and Neshoba counties fell to 5 per cent, while the district which includes Winston and Choctaw counties remained steady at just over 6 per cent.

We might see some hail as big as golf balls in this part of central Mississippi later today.  The National Weather Service is putting this area under a Level-2 “slight” risk for severe storms with large hail and damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour from mid-afternoon through tonight.  A line of storms is expected to form as a cold front moves into Mississippi.

All second-year Automotive students at the Kosciusko-Attala Career and Technical Center have successfully passed their Maintenance, Light Repair, and Repair certification exam, earning a perfect 100% pass rate.

The certification assesses students’ knowledge and hands-on skills in essential automotive systems, including electrical components, routine maintenance procedures, and basic vehicle repair. The achievement reflects the students’ dedication, technical training, and commitment to excellence throughout the program.

Automotive Instructor Alex Blanton prepared students through focused instruction aligned with industry standards and real-world expectations. By earning this certification, students have taken an important step toward career readiness and increased employability in the automotive field.

The Kosciusko-Attala Career and Technical Center hosted its annual “You’re Hired” event Thursday, Feb. 19, giving second-year Career and Technical Center students valuable real-world interview experience.

The event is designed to prepare students for the workforce by helping them build confidence and better understand employer expectations. Through direct interaction with local business and industry representatives, students gained insight into workplace professionalism, résumé presentation, and proper interview etiquette.

Each student participated in two mock interviews, providing opportunities to practice professional communication, respond to industry-based questions, and receive constructive feedback from employers.

KACTC officials expressed their appreciation to the many community and industry partners who volunteered their time and expertise to invest in the future of local students. Their participation continues to strengthen the connection between education and the workforce while supporting student success beyond the classroom.

Health Science I and II students at the Kosciusko-Attala Career and Technical Center recently spent the day learning from Dr. Ty McGee, a Kosciusko High School graduate who is currently completing his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC).

Dr. McGee spoke with students about careers in orthopedic surgery and led hands-on activities designed to give them a glimpse into the daily work of an orthopedic surgeon. The interactive experience allowed students to explore real-world skills and gain insight into the medical profession.

Students and instructors alike expressed their appreciation for Dr. McGee’s willingness to return to his hometown and invest in the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The Attala County Library will host a special live performance of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus on Friday, Feb. 27, featuring a musical adaptation presented by New Stage Theatre.

Inspired by the popular children’s book by Mo Willems, the production promises a high-energy, whimsical experience filled with laughter and audience-friendly fun for young viewers and families.

The performances will take place at the Attala County Coliseum, with showtimes scheduled for 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

The event is part of the Attala County Library’s ongoing efforts to provide engaging educational and cultural programming for the community.
