In one of our local public health districts, the flu rate is already five times higher than what the State Health Department is seeing statewide.  But it comes as no surprise.  The district which includes Attala, Holmes, Carroll and Montgomery counties and stretches west into the Delta has historically been Mississippi’s flu hotspot.  Even though flu season is just getting started, the most recent numbers show that, in that nine-county district, ten per cent of patients seeing their doctors had flu-like illnesses. That compares to two per cent statewide.  The flu rate in the district which includes Leake and Neshoba counties is just under three per cent.

The jury has reached a verdict. They find in favor of the respondent, Mayor Tim Kyle. The vote was unanimous.

Trial Day Three, Friday, November 14, 2025

(11/14/2025 at 6 p.m.): Closing arguments have been delivered and the jury is now in deliberation.

(11/14/2025 at 5:25 p.m.): Ms. Ross has delivered her closing argument, and now Mr. Baker will deliver his. After this, the jury will go into deliberation.

(11/14/2025 at 3:10 p.m.): Mrs. Quesnot’s testimony for the rebuttal phase will be submitted via affidavit. Closing arguments will be heard soon.

(11/14/2025 at 2:55 p.m.): Both sides have questioned the expert witness at length. Marvin Myles Jr.’s attorney, Lisa Ross, has requested Kosciusko city clerk Michelle Quesnot back to the witness stand.

(11/14/2025 at 12:45 p.m.): Mayor Tim Kyle was called to the stand and testified the majority of the morning. Mr. Baker, Kyle’s attorney, then called an expert witness to the stand who claims extensive election process experience. Court has recessed for lunch and will resume at 1:15 p.m. The trial is expected to finish today.

Trial Day Two, Thursday, November 13, 2025

End of Day 2 Update: Several poll workers testified today. The final witness to take the stand was Marvin Myles Jr. Prceedings concluded at 6:30 p.m. and will resume on Friday at 8:30 a.m.

(11/13/2025 at 3:30 p.m.): Michelle Quesnot was excused at 1:45 p.m., and multiple poll workers have taken the stand since. Questioning of the witnesses by both attorneys continues.

(11/13/2025 at 12:15 p.m.): The day began with Kosciusko City Clerk Michelle Quesnot on the witness stand being questioned by Attorney Lisa Ross (Marvin Myles’ attorney). Ross’ questioning of Quesnot ended around 11 a.m. Attorney Mark Baker (Tim Kyle’s attorney) then began questioning Quesnot. Court has recessed for lunch and will resume at 1:15 p.m. with redirect for Quesnot from Atty. Ross.

End of day 1 update: The first witness called was Kosciusko City Clerk Michelle Quesnot. Quesnot was questioned by Marvin Myles’ attorney, Lisa Ross. Court proceedings ended at 6 p.m. and are to begin again at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Update (11/12/2025 at 3:15 p.m.): The jury has been selected and the trial will begin shortly.

Proceedings are underway in the election contest trial for the June 2025 Kosciusko mayoral race.

Jurors are being selected in Attala County Circuit Court as the case officially begins.

The trial stems from a petition filed by Marvin Myles Jr., who is contesting the results of the June 3 election in which incumbent Mayor Tim Kyle was declared the winner.

The case is being heard by Judge Jeff Weill Sr. and is scheduled to continue through the week.

The outcome of the trial will determine whether the certified election results stand or if further action will be taken regarding the contested ballots.

A three-vehicle crash on Veterans Memorial Drive around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday sent one person to the hospital.

An Attala County Sheriff’s Deputy came upon the wreck and notified Kosciusko communications. Early reports indicated that one person may have been ejected from a vehicle, though it’s possible they exited on their own and laid down nearby to await medical care.

Two vehicles were towed from the scene. One individual was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, while another was evaluated by EMS at the scene but was not transported.

Details on how the crash occurred and the condition of the injured person have not been released.

The Aisle of Honor Ceremony was held in the Attala County Coliseum today. Ordinarily, this ceremony would have been held at the Parkway Cemetery in Kosciusko. The location was likely changed due to the cold weather. The purpose, however, remained the same: to honor veterans and their families.

The program began with an invocation spoken by Quartermaster VFW Glen Blackstock. Following this was the pledge of allegiance, and the national anthem sung by Mandy Hudgins.

Afterwards, Greyce Powell gave a welcome to the crowd and an introduction to the distinguished guests of the ceremony, followed by the service anthem medley. Mervin Foster, the Attala County Veteran Services Officer, then gave the definition of a veteran.

Once the definition was provided, veterans in the crowd were given an opportunity to speak about their experiences, how and why they enlisted, or their favorite memories from service.

To finish the ceremony, Rev. Marvin Myles sang God Bless America and gave a benediction.

The trial is set to begin this week in connection with a formal legal challenge to the results of the recent Kosciusko mayoral election.

Marvin Myles Jr. filed a petition in Attala County Circuit Court on Monday, June 23, contesting the outcome of the June 3, 2025, election.

The case challenges the certification of results that determined the winner of the city’s mayoral race.

The trial is scheduled for November 12–14, 2025, at the Attala County Circuit Court, with Judge Jeff Weill Sr. presiding.

On this Veterans Day, Mississippians are serving in the military, here at home and all over the world.  And Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith says many others have been part of the armed forces in the past…

“According to the most recent census, more than 140,000 veterans call Mississippi home, a powerful reminder of the deep well of patriotism and service that runs through our state.”

And while this day honors all those who’ve served, a family from Durant decided the gravesite of a young man who died a hero in Vietnam needed some attention….

“We want people like him to be remembered…”

Derek May says PFC Milton Lee Olive III, who grew up on his grandfather’s farm in Lexington, gave his life to save some of his fellow soldiers 60 years ago….

“And we want people to remember that the cost of freedom isn’t free…”

Olive, who was only 18, became the first African-American Vietnam veteran to be awarded the Medal of Honor for smothering an enemy grenade with his body.  He’s buried near Lexington at the West Grove Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.  His final resting place is well-marked, but May had heard that it needed to be cleaned up.  So, that’s what he, his wife Jodi and their son did….

“The cemetery overall seems to be well taken care of.  And so, we just did what we could do.  We wiped the moss off of his tombstone and the Medal of Honor citation…”

His wife, who runs a florist shop on the Square in Kosciusko, created a patriotic flower arrangement for the grave.  May, who served almost 12 years in the Mississippi National Guard with tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq, says when he learned the story about how Olive became a hero at such a young age, it hit home for him…                                                                                                “I have a 17-year-old son.  And so, you know, I’m thinking, this is like my son’s age when this took place.  This was somebody’s child that did such an amazing act to save the lives of the men to his left and the men to his right…”
