Update: The identity of the propane truck driver who lost his life in the crash has been released. Attala County Coroner Sam Bell says Mr. Kevin Gant, 60, of the Singleton community was pronounced deceased at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

A fatal crash involving an 18-wheeler, a propane truck, and a passenger vehicle occurred early Friday morning at the intersection of Highway 19 South and Highway 14 East.

Attala County Fire Department, Attala Deputies, MHP, and EMS were dispatched to the scene just after 6:30 a.m. Initial reports state the propane truck overturned during the crash. Authorities also reported a possible propane leak.

The drivers of the passenger vehicle and the 18-wheeler were reportedly out of their vehicles and speaking with responders. One person was pronounced deceased at the scene. Their identity has not been released

The crash will be investigated by MS Hwy Patrol.

Last night at the Choctaw Indian Fair a new Choctaw Indian Princess was crowned. Lexi Alaysia Flint from the Red Water Community (Leake County) was crowned as the 71st Choctaw Indian Princess. She was sponsored by the Red Water Development Club.

Lexi also won the Personal Presentation Award and Miss Congeniality.

HEAT ADVISORY shown in orange on map above

Holmes County will be under a heat advisory through Monday night.  The advisory stretches from the Delta through the Jackson area to the I-59 corridor and the coast.   Temperatures will climb into mid 90s in the local area today and Sunday and into the upper 90s in the west starting Monday.   The National Weather Service says, in some locations, “significant” heat stress is likely and an extreme heat warning is expected for some areas early next week.

Locally, the heat index could go from around 106 in Durant today to 110 by Monday.  Kosciusko and Philadelphia could see heat indices around 105 on Monday.  In Carthage, Monday’s heat index could be as high as 110.

The Attala County Fire Department responded to a gas leak Wednesday evening on Attala Road 1116.

According to ACFD Chief Tim Cox, firefighters arrived to find a vehicle parked on top of a 250 gallon underground propane tank.

The vehicle reportedly damaged the main valve of the tank, causing propane to spew out with the vehicle still running and parked over the leaking tank.

Firefighters evacuated the nearby home and secured the vehicle while waiting for the gas company to arrive

Once gas company personnel was on scene, crews came up with a plan to safely stop the leak using their lifting airbags to raise the vehicle off the damaged valve.

After the vehicle was lifted, crews were able to secure the leak and bring the situation under control. No injuries were reported.

Around 12:00 AM on Wednesday morning, the Attala County Sheriff’s Office received a notification of a tree that fell on the Natchez Trace between mile markers 163 and 164. They were also notified of a driver who ran into the tree while it was downed.

The driver’s husband reportedly came to try removing the vehicle from the tree but ended up leaving with the driver in his own vehicle, intending to come back later. No injuries were reported, and a wrecker was called to remove the tree.

The debate over whether Americans should continue changing their clocks twice a year is back in the spotlight.

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide, reigniting a long-running discussion: Should we keep the extra evening daylight all year, or should we stay on Standard Time?

For many people, the twice-a-year clock change has become a source of frustration.

Supporters of permanent Daylight Saving Time argue that longer evenings provide more opportunities for outdoor activities, recreation, and businesses. Opponents say keeping Standard Time year-round better aligns with natural daylight patterns, especially during winter mornings.

The issue has been debated for years, and residents in our area have previously weighed in.

In 2020, we asked our readers what they thought about the future of Daylight Saving Time. The results showed a community divided, with a slight majority favoring keeping the extra daylight year-round.

Many teachers are up in arms over a new way of purchasing classroom supplies.  The Mississippi Department of Education says each qualified teacher has been allocated $748 in Education Enhancement Funds and they’re being told they can access the money starting today through a new digital platform called ClassWallet.   Kosciusko Middle Elementary teacher Lindsey Fitts has several concerns about the new system.

“I cannot go to a local store and purchase what I need for my classroom right then.  I can’t go to my local businesses and support them after they have supported us teachers all these years.”

She says there are a lot of questions about how things are done now.

“If I were to try to go to a store, I would have to pay for it myself and then apply for a reimbursement.  But that hasn’t even been set up.  So, you don’t know if that’s actually going to work or not.”

And Fitts says there’s no way for teachers to quickly get the supplies they need from the vendor list because it takes five to ten days to get an order approved.

“Then you have to wait for it to be shipped.  So, you’re talking possibly two weeks to get items for your classroom.”

Another local teacher says that’s a real problem.

“There’s classroom teachers that decide to do a project, you know, in the next day or two and they won’t be able to get their items as fast as they want.”

That teacher at Kosciusko Junior High asked that we not use her name.

The Department of Education says the digital platform helps teachers track their spending and automatically collect receipts.  It says more than 160 vendors are in the system and teachers can request that local businesses be added.

State Auditor Shad White has been sharply critical of the changes in the way classroom supplies are purchased.  He says the new program makes it much more difficult for teachers to spend the funds and he’s calling on the Department of Education to address their concerns immediately.
