The Attala County School District has announced registration dates and requirements for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year.

All student registration will be completed online, but parents and guardians must still visit their child’s school during the designated registration period to complete the process and receive class schedules.

Summer registration will be held:

July 15, July 20 & July 21
8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

July 16
Noon – 6 p.m.

District officials say there will be no registration after July 27. Students who miss the summer registration window will have to wait until August 6 to register.

The Little Whippet Soccer Camp returns to Kosciusko High School July 21-23 for kids ages 4-12.

The camp will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. each day at the Kosciusko High School Athletic Complex. Participants will work on soccer fundamentals, play games, and train alongside current Kosciusko High School players.

Registration is $75 for all three days or $30 per day.

After some flash flooding along the I-20 and I-59 corridors Sunday night, more heavy rain is possible today across a large part of Mississippi including most of the local area.  The National Weather Service says two to four inches of rain could fall during the afternoon and evening hours.

Heat stress will be held in check during the first part of the week with temperatures averaging four to eight degrees below normal.  But hotter conditions will return by the end of the week.

Kosciusko Police are investigating a pair of vehicle thefts reported over the weekend.

Authorities say one vehicle was stolen early Saturday morning from Gilliland Street, and a second vehicle was reported stolen early Sunday morning from South Natchez Street.

Police are encouraging residents to remain aware of your surroundings, lock their vehicles, and report any suspicious activity. KPD reminds the public, if you see something, say something.

The Philadelphia Police Department has made arrests in connection with the early morning shooting on July 12 that claimed the life of 19-year-old Jamari Hickman and injured three others.

The following individuals have been arrested and charged:

Ja’Tavious Johnson, 20, of Carthage, Mississippi

Jacob Triplett, 20, of Carthage, Mississippi

Both suspects have been charged with First-Degree Murder and three counts of Attempted Murder.

Both men were arrested in Leake Co. with the assistance of Carthage Police Department and the Leake Co Sheriff’s Office.

On July 12, 2026, at approximately 12:15 a.m., officers responded to the area of W. Walnut Street after receiving multiple reports of shots fired and multiple victims. The shooting occurred during a large birthday gathering attended by individuals from several surrounding counties.

Upon arrival, officers found Jamari Hickman suffering from multiple gunshot

wounds. Officers immediately began rendering aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Hickman was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Three additional victims were transported to a local hospital by private vehicle. One female sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was later transferred to another hospital for additional treatment. The other two victims—a female who was grazed in the arm and a male who was grazed in the leg—were treated and released later that night.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and additional arrests are expected.

UPDATE: Philadelphia Police have identified the victim in Sunday’s fatal shooting as 19-year-old Jamari Hickman.

PHILADELPHIA, Miss. — Four people were shot, including one person who was killed, during a shooting early Sunday morning on West Walnut Street, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Police said the first 911 calls came in at 12:02 a.m. reporting multiple people had been shot in a large crowd gathered on Walnut Street. Officers arrived to find Hickman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported by ambulance to Neshoba General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hickman was a 2026 graduate of Philadelphia High School, where he played multiple sports for the Tornadoes, including football and basketball.

Three other people were also injured in the shooting. A woman who was shot in the leg was transported by private vehicle to a local hospital before being transferred to a Jackson hospital for additional treatment. Two other victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated and released.

No arrests have been announced, and the shooting remains under investigation.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–Two cars wrecked Saturday morning on Hwy. 35 south near Kosciusko.

Attala County deputies were dispatched to the location of the wreck, which was in front of Lawrence Grocery, just after 9:30 a.m. An ambulance was also dispatched.

Someone was injured, but did not go to the hospital.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–Gunshots were reported early Saturday at North Natchez Apartments in Kosciusko.

The person who called police also reported they could hear people arguing.

That call was about 1:05 a.m.

Shortly after police arrived they reported chasing someone, with that person being caught at North Natchez and Hwy. 12.

When officers arrived on the scene, an intoxicated man ran from the area, prompting a foot chase. When police apprehended the man, it was determined that he had nothing to do with the alleged shooting. Authorities investigated the report of shots fired, but those who spoke with officers stated they didn’t hear anything.

KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–A fight was reported Friday night in Kosciusko between at least two people.

The call was about 10 p.m., possibly in the Sullivan’s parking lot. The caller reported two people fighting with sticks.

Kosciusko Police arrived and shortly after one person was reported in custody.

The National Weather Service is keeping a large part of Mississippi including most of the local area under a Level-1 “marginal” risk of isolated severe storms through this evening.  Damaging wind gusts will be possible.  Heavy rain and frequent lightning can also be expected.  NWS says between 2 and 4 inches of rain could fall possibly triggering flash flooding.

With more showers and storms forecast through Wednesday, the state will enjoy a brief break from the heat stress with afternoon highs reaching only into the mid and upper 80s.   Hotter and drier weather will return later in the week.
