The price of gas in Mississippi has jumped an average of almost six cents in the last two days.  AAA says the statewide average is now at $3.69, the highest it’s been since the middle of June.  Despite the increase, the auto club says only two states—Indiana and Texas—have a lower average price.

And if you’re looking to save on a tank of gas, the average price countywide in Leake County is the lowest in Mississippi at $3.50.   According to GasBuddy.com, it’s selling for as little as $3.33 in Carthage.  But the phone app says the lowest price it’s found in this area is actually in Philadelphia, at $3.32, even though the countywide average in Neshoba County is 11 cents higher than Leake.

The entire local area– and much of Mississippi– will be under a heat advisory today as temperatures climb into the upper 90s this afternoon with a heat index around 105.  And a heat advisory has been posted for Thursday as well.   The National Weather Service says, even though September is here, it’ll feel like July or August in Mississippi for at least the next couple of weeks.  Fall begins Sept. 22 and typically, the first significant cold front of the season arrives toward the end of the month or in early October.

As far as any immediate heat relief, that would have to come from rain.  And there’s a better chance of that on Friday, ranging from 40 per cent in Durant to 50 per cent in Kosciusko and 60 per cent in Carthage and Philadelphia.

Last Thursday Evening, the Attala County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a shooting on Attala Rd 2207.

Deputies responded and discovered a male lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital and found not to be fatally wounded.

Mary Fox was and charged with aggravated assault. she is currently being held at Leake County Correctional Facility with a bond set at $150k

During opening statements, prosecutors alleged that Bryan Weaver had two motives for killing his then-wife, Tracy Weaver: an affair with his now-wife, Angel McAdams Weaver, and at least $500,000 in life insurance benefits he stood to receive following Tracy’s death.

The defense argued that evidence will show that Bryan and Tracy Weaver had filed for divorce years before Tracy’s death and were working through the terms, questioning why Bryan would murder his wife rather than file for divorce again. As for the prosecution’s claim of financial gain as a motive, the defense stated that no life insurance coverage had been increased before Tracy’s death.

Mr. Weaver’s initial interview with law enforcement was played in court today, and several law enforcement officers testified. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation’s director of digital forensics was the final witness to testify Tuesday evening.

Court has been dismissed for the day and will reconvene at 9 a.m. Wednesday, September 2.

Opening statements from both the prosecution and the defense concluded this morning.

The prosecution has begun calling witnesses and presenting evidence, including photographs taken at the crime scene.

Court has recessed for lunch and will reconvene at 12:45 p.m.

The prosecution and defense are preparing video and audio evidence to be presented when proceedings resume.

Jurors have been selected and opening statements are set to begin soon in the trial of Bryan Weaver.

Weaver is charged with first-degree murder in the 2023 death of his then-wife, Tracy Weaver.

Local residents facing persistent power grid disruptions will soon have a chance to speak with top state and utility leaders.

A public town hall meeting has been called for Monday, Sept 21, at 6:00 p.m. to tackle ongoing electrical issues and frequent power outages affecting Carmack and surrounding Attala County communities.

The meeting will be held at the Carmack Community Center located at 24452 Highway 35 North.

A panel of decision-makers will be on hand to answer questions and detail corrective action plans. Key leaders scheduled to attend include Mississippi Speaker of the House Jason White, Public Service Commission Northern District Commissioner Chris Brown, and Entergy CEO Haley Fisackerly.

Organizers strongly encourage all affected community members to attend, voice their concerns, and hear directly from officials about long-term solutions for the region’s power supply.

Kosciusko quarterback Caiden Wade has been named the MS Gridiron / Capital Sports MS Player of the Week following a dominant performance that led the Whippets to a 55-35 victory over Neshoba Central in Week 1.

Wade led the Whippets high-powered offensive output for Kosciusko, accounting for six total touchdowns. Through the air, the senior completed 19 of 29 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns. He was also dominant on the ground, rushing 10 times for 111 yards and adding another three scores to seal the win.

Wade’s isn’t the only Whippet being recognized for a performance against Neshoba Central. Two of his primary offensive weapons also earned Statewide Top Performer honors for their roles in the 20-point win:

Jontavious Roundtree, WR: Hauled in seven receptions for an 205 yards and three touchdowns.

C.J. Sandifer, RB: Carried the ball 15 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

Together, the trio accounted for all eight of the Whippets’ touchdowns in the offensive explosion against the Rockets.

In Carthage, two people are dead from carbon monoxide poisoning.  In a Facebook post, the police department says officers were called to check on some people at a mobile home park Monday and found the bodies of two unidentified males.  Leake County Coroner Earl Adams says the carbon monoxide that killed them was the result of a generator which had been running inside the mobile home.
