Former Kosciusko Whippet Dre Riley has officially landed on Mississippi State’s season-opening depth chart, earning the No. 2 spot at safety ahead of the Bulldogs’ kickoff this Saturday.

While he finished his high school career leading Charleston to a state championship run, Riley played his sophomore year in Kosciusko. During that sophomore year, he racked up 52 tackles (40 solo), four tackles for loss, and two interceptions, while finding the end zone twice, once on a reception and once on an interception return.

Nicknamed “Big Play Dre,” Riley spent the past two seasons at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

He tallied 72 tackles, three interceptions, and helped lead the Rangers to two MACCC Championships before committing to Mississippi State over offers from Illinois and Purdue.

Jury selection is still underway in the murder trial of former Attala County Superintendent Bryan Weaver.

Trial proceedings began Monday, August 31, and are scheduled to continue through Friday, September 4.

Weaver is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the August 2023 shooting death of his wife, Tracy Weaver.

As of Monday at 2 p.m., a jury has not been seated and the selection process continues.

Mississippi Blood Services is issuing an urgent appeal for blood donors amid a critical shortage across the state, with two community blood drives scheduled in Kosciusko early next month.

The first local drive will take place Thursday, Sept. 3, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Attala from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. A second Kosciusko drive will be held Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, in the Walmart parking lot from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome.

Mississippi Blood Services says donors, especially those with A, B, and O blood types, are needed immediately to ensure local hospitals have an adequate supply of lifesaving blood products.

Presenting donors will receive a thank-you gift at the time of donation. In addition, anyone who donates blood starting Aug. 29 will automatically be entered into the “Road to the Dome” giveaway for a chance to win four tickets to see the New Orleans Saints take on the Atlanta Falcons at the Caesars Superdome.

Anyone unable to attend the Kosciusko dates can find additional donation opportunities across the region throughout September.

The murder trial of Bryan Weaver, who is charged in the death of his wife, Tracy Weaver, begins today, Monday, August 31, and is scheduled to continue through Friday, September 4.

Weaver was indicted for first-degree murder in February 2025 in connection with the August 2023 shooting death of his wife, Tracy Weaver, who was found dead inside the couple’s Attala County home.

Authorities are investigating the deaths of two people who were found dead in their home in the Zama community on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

At approximately 4:58 p.m., an individual arrived home and found a male and female who also lived at the residence unresponsive. The incident was reported to the Attala County Sheriff’s Office, and deputies and EMS were dispatched to the scene.

Attala County Coroner Sam Bell identified the two deceased individuals as Johnny Ray Reeves II, 38, and Nicole Massey, 39, of Attala. The causes of death are unknown at this time. Bell says the bodies have been transported to the state crime lab for autopsies.

The Attala County Sheriff’s Office and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident. We will update you as more information become available.

It’s been a common occurrence this summer– Holmes County getting hotter than the rest of the local area.  Locations near and west of I-55 have been the focus of most of our heat stress episodes.  And the one that’s underway as we reach the end of August is no exception.  The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for a portion of western Mississippi including Holmes County until 8 pm this evening.  The heat index in Durant today is forecast around 105.

Tomorrow, Carroll County will be added to the heat advisory beginning at noon.

As the week goes on, the heat stress will spread to the east.  The heat index in Carthage could reach 105 as early as tomorrow and by Wednesday, heat indices could range from 105 in Philadelphia to 106 in Kosciusko and Carthage and 107 in Durant.
