The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced tax relief for Mississippi residents and businesses affected by the severe winter storm that began January 23, 2026.

Affected taxpayers now have until June 8, 2026, to file federal tax returns and make tax payments that were originally due between January 23 and June 8, 2026.

The relief applies to individuals and businesses across Mississippi following a federal disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The IRS says most eligible taxpayers will automatically receive the extended deadlines. Those who live outside the disaster area but were affected can call the IRS disaster assistance line at 866-562-5227 to request relief.

Additional relief may be available, including options to claim storm-related casualty losses on tax returns.

Kosciusko has released its 2026 football schedule.

The schedule includes non-district games against Neshoba Central, Florence, Hernando, Olive Branch, Choctaw County, and Amanda Elzy.

District games for the Whippets will be at Gentry, vs Louisville, at Greenwood, and vs Yazoo City.

The first game of the season is set for Friday, Aug. 29 vs Neshoba Central.

A Kosciusko Whippets baseball players will play in an upcoming all-star game.

Senior pitcher/infiedler Carson Philyaw has been named to the Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) All-Star team.

Philyaw will play for the North Team in the 4A-5A MAC 2026 Crossroads Diamond Club D.M. Howie All-Star Game.

This season, Philyaw has a batting average of .365 and is tied for 2nd on the team with 20 RBIs. On the mound, he has pitched 24.1 innings with 31 strikeouts.

The MAC baseball all-star weekend will be held Wednesday, May 27 – Thursday, May 28 at William Carey University in Hattiesburg.

A crash on Hwy 12 near Smith Rd. in Oktibbeha County has claimed the life of 54-year-old Marvin Lynn Graham of Ethel, MS.

According to authorities, the crash happened around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14 when a truck driven by 29-year-old Octavious Evans of Gulport, MS collided head on with Graham’s sedan.

Mr. Evans was airlifted to North MS Medical Center in Tupelo with serious injuries. Mr. Graham was pronounced deceased on scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

State Senator Bradford Blackmon (D-District 21) announced that during the 2026 Mississippi Legislative Session $19,365,000 in state appropriations was secured for 24 critical projects across Senate District 21, which includes portions of Holmes, Leake, Attala, and Madison counties.

Blackmon, an attorney who has represented the district since January 2024, highlighted the funding’s focus on infrastructure, public safety, and community development.

“These funds will make a real difference for the communities I am blessed to serve,” he stated in a social media post accompanying a detailed appropriations breakdown.

Several funded initiatives directly benefit Attala County communities, including the city of Kosciusko, the town of Ethel, and the McAdams area. These projects emphasize public safety, community facilities, and essential water infrastructure improvements.

Additionally, Holmes County projects in the town of Lexington, Pickens, and West will also receive funding.

Kosciusko High School senior guard Cory Guyton Jr. signed Tuesday to continue his basketball career at Jones College.

The 6’2 guard helped lead the Whippets to the semifinals of the 4A MHSAA playoffs this season. He capped his high school career by surpassing 1,000 career points and earned recognition as one of the top players in the area, including selection as 4A Region 4 Player of the Year.

Guyton signed on his birthday, adding a special touch to the milestone moment.

He was joined at the signing by family, teammates, and Kosciusko coaches.

The community walking event is designed for participants of all fitness levels, offering a relaxed opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while staying active. Walkers will be able to move at their own pace and choose a distance that fits their comfort level, making the event suitable for both beginners and experienced walkers.

Participants will gather at the Kosciusko Welcome Center before heading out along the scenic trails of the Natchez Trace. Organizers recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes, water, and a friend to join in the experience.

Following the walk, participants will travel to historic French Camp, where the morning will conclude with an optional brunch at the Council House Cafe. Participants are responsible for the cost of their own meals.

Organizers say the event is intended to promote community, wellness, and appreciation for one of Mississippi’s most treasured landscapes.

The average price of gas in Mississippi, after falling slightly for four days in a row, has leveled off at just under $3.75 this morning.  AAA says that’s about three cents lower than the peak price last week.   And the auto club says some of the least expensive gas can still be found in Leake County, where the countywide average price is the second-lowest in the state, behind only Pearl River County.  AAA says the average price in Leake County is around $3.61, but GasBuddy.com says you can fill up in Carthage for as little as $3.35.  The average price in Neshoba County is almost $3.72 and is around $3.83 in both Attala and Holmes counties.  The lowest price Gas Buddy has found in Philadelphia is $3.57, in Durant $3.64 and in Kosciusko, $3.79.
