Brian shares an idea he heard from a friend on his recent business trip about working with ideal prospective clients.

You've got to catch them before you clean them.

Hi, I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I heard a great talk from a friend of mine named Gary. And he was discussing the process of bringing on partners onto his business. And the temptation that happens a lot. And this isn't just with partners, you could use the same analogy when you're dealing with customers that you're looking to bring in.

Whether you're looking to bring in patients to your doctor's office, it doesn't matter what it is, is the same thing applies.

So often we're looking for an ideal. And a lot of times, you know, as a person that's a strategist, I tried to get my clients and partners and people I'm doing business with to focus on the ideal.

There's a big importance of focusing on the ideal, the ideal customer, the ideal client, the ideal patient, what have you. By focusing on the ideal, you're going for the top, you're going for the person that's going to work best, it's a best-case scenario situation.

When you start making that switch, it's really great.

But at the same time, you may get caught in this little trick in your brain, which is that you start thinking that the ideal is real, and the ideal isn't real, the ideal is ideal for a reason, it's ideal is in a perfect world. This is what I would go after that and you don't necessarily need to settle for just the plain, perfect ideal, what you do is you have a point at which there's a minimum on which they have to meet.

But you include allowing a whole lot of differences in that you have to because if you don't, you'll go crazy in trying to look for the perfect customer, the perfect partner, and so forth.

And I just love this line that Gary said. He said, and I'm sure it's an old saying I'm sure you can find it in a million different places. But it came to him and he was using it. As he applied this, I thought it was really it was really great, because it's a fishing term.

You know, if you're talking about fishing, you've got to catch them before you can clean them, you're not going to be able to clean the fish up and get it ready to eat until you've caught it.

Don't try to change everybody to be your ideal right out of the gate. Don't you want them to be a certain way in the long run. But a whole lot of that is going to require training or education, or information or motivation or what have you to be able to get them to go from point A to point B.

Don't try and look for point B right off the bat your problem, you should look for it. But you're probably going to find someone more than less than perfect. If that makes sense.

You have to catch them before you clean them.

Simple idea. Not so simple to incorporate into your life because we were always looking for a perfect situation. We're always looking to fix people before we've started a relationship with them.

You got to start that relationship first, then you can fix them in every way possible over time. If you're patient, and you give it time, and you let them come to you in a sense.

So hopefully that's helpful to you. I've got strategies that can help you expand your business and overcome competition. It's my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. You can get a free copy at AmazonProofBook. com. It's all I got for tonight.

  • Be Impulsive

Road trip continues as Brian and the family head from Utah out to Idaho.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjrWRdjudhQ

    Be impulsive.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I'm coming to you from the front seat of our rental vehicle that we use to get across the country. Really, it was just hitting up a handful of states while we're out of town on a business trip, the first time taking the entire family on this long of a business trip.

So it was a nice little experiment, I haven't had as much time to do things.

So I wanted to stop and see friends. I know there's a bunch of you who I said I was going to stop and see in the Salt Lake City area in the Boise area. And I can't, I'm sorry, our schedule was so tight this time around.

In the future, I hope to have a looser schedule, to where I can fit in time to be able to see all my friends. see people who I haven't seen in a long time will definitely do it, what will make it happen, but didn't happen this time.

What did happen this time, though, it was interesting, I had some business meetings with some folks and I had an idea I had a concept and I had to make it public. I had to put it out there.

Because without it, it would never really happen on my own. It had to happen because I got it out there in front of people that we actually started talking about this, you know.

And so I did it, I went ahead and did it, I offered it, I put it out there. And now we're starting a new process that we've never had in place before. But that I know it has great possibilities of actually being something big. So at least for me.

And so I'm excited and it brought me back, it's like what was the difference between doing it and not doing it. A lot of times, if you're anything like me, you may not be a shoot first ask questions later, on certain things I am, I'm a very, go get them.

Do it now type of person on a lot of things. But when it's something new, I oftentimes will chew it around in my brain, write it down on paper, pass it by a few other people first, I do a whole bunch of things with it before I fully implement it. And it really has to do with your personality and your cohesion and so forth.

And so everyone's a little bit different. If you already have this, you don't have to worry about it. But when I was working very early on in business, I had a kind of a mentor, say you've got to be impulsive, you have to be impulsive, you have to be at the point when you're making phone calls. And you're having to make that next phone call to get ahold of somebody. You have to pick it up and dial and then worry about what you're going to say. It's got to be one of those types of things.

You have to be impulsive, the longer you sit around and think about it. And he was really a person that sat around and thought about things. I mean, this was a thinker.

But he said, You've got to be impulsive.

And that's one of those lessons from him that I've never forgotten. So I pass it on you be impulsive, you will be happy for those times in your life when you thought, should I do it, should I not do it, sometimes you just got to pull the trigger, you got to run forward and be impulsive.

So quick tip while I'm on the road. It's not always easy to get these videos out.

While I'm on the road for the past two days. I have not had a video out and I'm completely honest, I've done it that I haven't done it like that in a long time.

  • Patience Is Magical

Wrong hotel, lost wallet and wild and crazy kids. Just another day on the Pombo's Road Trip.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0O8K8Nj-g8

    Transcription

    Patience is magical.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I'm going to talk with you real quick here about patience. Because I am sitting here just above the lobby of the Marriott Hotel in Salt Lake City. And this is the one in city Creek downtown at City Creek is what it's called.

There are multiple Marriott's if you happen to ever stay at a Marriott in Salt Lake City, be sure and remember that there are multiple Marriott's and with very similar names. I already knew this coming into town, I'm looking right now at this is the directory of this city Creek center which is like the outdoor mall here. And there's multiple Marriott's have very similar names.

So this is city Creek center. There's also a Marriott at City Center. This is the Marriott downtown at City Creek. This is this gets kind of confusing, then there's other Marriott's.

But I had been telling my friends who I knew were going to be coming to town there's a conference going to be happening in town here. I told them about this and to be very careful that we are staying at Downtown City Creek.

After all, that I've got my whole family loaded up. We've been traveling for days, if you've been following, we've been traveling, and we get to Salt Lake City and I had I put specifically the right hotel into the GPS to get us right where we needed to go. I get there. I go in and they can't find my reservation.

And they say is it under a different name?

I said not everyone that's in my room has the last name, Pombo. This is the place. Do you mean to be at one of the other places, I'm going oh my gosh, I did it. I went to the wrong hotels. So sure enough, I went to the wrong hotel, I said no problem happens all the time.

They give me a way out of the parking. I leave, get to the right hotel. And I realized that I was sitting there at the reservation desk with my wallet out and I left my wallet right there.

And so I go all the way back there side isn't it's only a few blocks away. But blocks in Salt Lake City are big. And they take a while to get between when you're driving. So had to drive all the way back go and get that but we had kind of this crazy day.

And you have to remain calm and patient you have to laugh off when you're when you do silly things because it's just a stupid, silly thing and there's just nothing else to it.

    That's life, right?

And that's patience. And it's not something that I've come to easily. But you either get more and more patient with time or you get bitter and angry and you hold on to things too much. You got to go one direction or the other.

Eventually, you got to get to the point where you were so frustrated that you're done with being frustrated. You realize that frustration gets you absolutely nowhere. Okay.

The only reason why I'm bringing this up is I was at the lobby of the actual hotel had some friends there that I was meeting with. And my kids are just running all over the place like just mad crazy people like they're raised out in the middle of the country, which they are, but they're not always that crazy, but they've been locked up in a car for five hours.

And so they're running around like crazy.

I'm just it's no big deal. You can't control it. You gotta yell, roll with the chaos. And my friend Elsa, you know,

    Living a daring adventure.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today I'm coming to you from my car. Because all the kids are trying to sleep up in the hotel room. This neon light is a little bit of a clue as to where I am, I'm in the great state of Nevada, the Silver State.

If you've never been to Nevada, you'll see a lot of this around. Because of the glitz and glamour and gambling and everything else that comes with Nevada, I'm in a very touristy type of town called Winnemucca. It is out in the middle of nowhere along Highway 80, which crosses straight across Nevada.

And it's funny because we didn't come the regular way, while we came from a regular way coming from Oregon, which is straight through the middle of nowhere. And you go for hours and hours and hours without seeing sight or sound of civilization.

This whole time, the reason why it's an adventure is that I came with my kids, okay, and my wife, and we rented a car, we came all the way out. And it's just as you can imagine having three kids, seven years old, four years old, and two years old.

It takes a little longer, if you can't imagine it, I can't explain it, it's just it's one of those things where you just have to experience it, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I mean, honestly, I make a lot of fun of it and everything, but I really wouldn't have it any other way.

If I didn't want it to be adventurous, I just would have taken a plane. And that would have been made, and it would have been nice and quiet. But I you know, you only live once and your kids only have a childhood once and I like getting them out of the house.

And if I could do it on business, great, I get right off my end of it. The rest of it's all family stuff, so it doesn't work as well on taxes. So you just got to be able to split the difference there and, you know, make everything work out.

Especially right, you know, talk to your accountant, I'm not, I'm not giving you any type of tax advice whatsoever, talk to a professional, it's fun, it's really a lot of fun to do, you know, we're making out making memories.

The kids don't care whether you're in any place historical or any place that matters. What matters is the fun that you have along the way.

I've mentioned a few nights ago about listening to old time radio, and listening to the drama and actors of that time period. And since then, there's been a whole lot of other stuff that has been put out, you know, decade after decade, other forms of audio theatre has been produced.

And so I was listening to some, I had found a couple bad come out during the 70s and, and 80s some some stuff we had, we're listening to the The Hobbit being performed and Wizard of Oz and Alice Through the Looking Glass and all this stuff that, you know, no one even realizes this stuff is out there.

But so much of it's out there for free.

Now, you can find it in these places and so we find fun, crazy stuff to do stuff that's different and weird. And then we're just that type of family and we just have that type of life. I just want to recommend that you got to add some adventure, some color some pizzazz into your life, whether you have a family, a direct family or not to be able to share it with get out there and start having ...

    Pray for me.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I'm about to go through a very harrowing experience. And the best way to describe it would be the longest road trip ever with the most amount of children in one vehicle that I've ever encountered.

That's right, me and the Pombo clan, are going across the country.

Well, not across the country, but we're going a few states over and a few states back over a six-day period. So we're going to be traveling to Salt Lake City is our furthest destination and we are going the quickest route there.

Which is also the most boring route possible because you're hitting nothing but desert, all the way and we're driving the whole family.

This is the first time I've taken the whole family on a business trip, oftentimes I will fly, this trip, I have driven it multiple times, because I've been to conferences in Salt Lake City, I have business partners in the area and so I'm used to it. It's not that big of a deal.

But we're traveling, we're taking everybody this time, we're going to drive it. And this is the first time we're trying it. So this is an experiment and I'm inviting you to come along with me as we go through this adventure.

I'm not going to show you all the details. I don't think most of the social media outlets would appreciate the graphic detail of three children of seven, four, and two, and two parents at their wit's end trying to survive in the desert.

So we're stopping in Winnemucca on the way there, we're going to spend the night in Winnemucca out in the middle of nowhere. But it's pretty much our best-case scenario in terms of somewhere in between here in Salt Lake.

We're coming from Grants Pass Oregon if you're new, and we're going Winnemucca and then after that Salt Lake City. Be in Salt Lake for a couple of nights coming back staying in Boise, Idaho. I've never been Idaho before so new state.

So we're going through Idaho and staying in Boise, and then driving all the way home from there. So it'll be an interesting trip. We've got a couple of fun places to be able to stop or interesting places at least. I'll show you what I can but I try not to do too many edits because that makes everything really difficult to put out.

But we'll see what we can do, hang in there. Come along with me on this little adventure.

Stay tuned, subscribe, wherever you're at. If you're watching this years into the future. You're welcome to watch it all. I'm sure we have it compiled together on some playlist and YouTube land or somewhere else. rumble wherever you're watching it.

    The Shadow knows…content marketing?

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I have a lot of odd interests and one of the strange interests that I've brought up in the past is, I really enjoy things that I want. It's tied to my interest in all things from the 1930s and 40s.

I've got a strange fascination with things, you can see the old-style radio back behind me.

I've always had an interest in this time period ends because listen to my grandparents growing up during that time. And one of the things I have a real interest in was old-time radio.

So before the days of television, they had movies, you could go and watch a movie. But if you wanted ongoing entertainment beyond just going to the movie theater, there was only the radio. You could grab a book, or you can listen to the radio and they would perform just like they perform today on television. And a lot of the same standards that we have on television with 30 minutes, 60-minute shows, that all started on the radio.

Even soap operas themselves started on the radio, situation comedies, you know, drama, especially police drama, all that started on the radio, and they would have these radio shows.

And we still have a whole lot of them still available, even though a lot of them were performed live. Many of them were recorded, many of them were lost through time.

One of the shows was a show called The Shadow, and some of you may be vaguely familiar with this because in the 90s, they came out with a movie with Alec Baldwin as The Shadow.

He was basically an old superhero, I'm not going to get into the depths of all the shadow lore, but he was always one of my favorite characters from these radio shows.

And if you watch old movies and stuff, he was so popular at the time, you watch old movies, you watch cartoons from the time they make reference to him. And so you're going Brian, what's this have to do with business?

What's this have to do with content marketing, which is the area that I have a modern interest in right now. And something that I've worked on quite a bit. And been and working with companies right now and helping develop content marketing, because it's a burgeoning field, within online within social media, within the law, all this video and stuff that we're putting out on a regular basis.

That's all content marketing, but content marketing didn't start with the internet.

Content Marketing has always been around. And it's one of my most favorite types of marketing because it takes creativity. And I enjoy things that take creativity. I like the idea behind it.

So I'll tell you how the shadow ties into this.

How the shadow came about is there was a company it's the Street & Smith publishing company. And they had started publishing a magazine called, Popular. This was back in the early 1900s. Let's see 1905 they had a real successful magazine, they branched out into all different types of magazines, and they had detective stories and Western stories. You know, most of the cases, these are fictional stories that are written that and they'd put these magazines out, I think on a monthly basis.

And they'd sell well all over the country and they make good money off and eventually, they sold internationally. So they had they in order to try and get more people to buy their magazines.

    Your customers demand proof.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I'm holding in my hand a copy of Breakthrough Advertising, by Eugene Schwartz.

Classic. Absolute classic when it comes to marketing, when it comes to, if you're dealing in any type of sales or marketing, if you're trying to get a message out to someone and convince them that you're right and convince them to do something, you gotta get a copy of this book, it's a it's not an easy one to get.

It's been reprinted currently by Titans Marketing, I think you go to TitansMarketing.com (https://www.briankurtz.net/products) and get a copy. I think that's where I got this one.

And just, it is like reading…I don't know how to explain it?

When it comes to books, it's like eating a piece of very thick New York cheesecake, something that's very rich, and you just have to take a little bit of time because it can jar you if you're really paying attention. Because there's so much depth in here and so many things that, to this day, people don't talk about when it comes to marketing.

Although I have heard a lot of the geniuses out there, the ones that really know what they're doing, they bring up these points over and over again. And the point I was just reading about in here, the only reason I'm holding this book is to give a plug to it, but also, because it brought up this concept of proof and the fact that your customers and clients, they're going to demand proof whether they say it out loud or not.

    It's what's going on inside.

Because you're making some type of a claim right off the bat. At some point, if you are doing any type of sale whatsoever, you're saying, if you get this, this is what's going to happen to you.

And I know FCC and all these…FEC I should say, and all these other alphabet soup organizations and the government that they always try to stop claims from being made, but you can't get a claim, in reality, a claim is going to be made, the real question is whether it's a fair claim or not.

And that's why you got to make sure you follow all the rules. But in terms of claims, you got to know what you are asking them to believe and what type of proof you're providing, that it's actually a true statement.

Whatever it is you're offering, I'm going to give you an example. So I was working with a company years ago and I saw something similar that brought this up. And they made a claim that if you do this, if you take this nutrition product, if you consume it, that you will get blank. And I'll tell you what, that what that general claim was, is that this nutrition product will raise your antioxidants on the inside. And therefore, you will have a higher antioxidant level and lower oxidized stress to your cells.

If you know anything about antioxidants. There's a whole story behind it. And I won't get into the science behind that. But this was their claim. And it was tough because it's one of those things that you can't outright prove.

In most cases, you can't just go out and show people how this occurs.

Business TV show: Hey Moe! Hey Dad!

I'm Brian Pombo welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Hey Moe! Hey Dad! is a mini-series that was put out, back I believe in 2015. I believe there are eight or nine episodes of it and it's one full story.

Why am I bringing up the three stooges?

When it comes to business there's a whole lot you can learn from this stuff. But let me take it back a little further.

The reason why I'll love to make recommendations for movies and TV shows is that it gives you a very different view than say, you know how-to books, which is a lot of what I focus on, you know, like my, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. If you haven't got a free copy yet, get it now while you can. And after you get your free copy, you'll get the option to get an audiobook and a hard copy of it, you might want to look into AmazonProofBook.com. Go to AmazonProofBook.com for that very special deal.

I don't know how long it's going to last. So be sure and catch it while you can. So let's talk about movies and TV shows. Now, this is kind of a mix because what this rule is is is a mini-series, this was a mini-series.

This is as if you had a very long documentary about the lives of the Three Stooges, that's been stretched out and split out into eight different episodes. For me personally, this was fabulous, because I grew up with the three stooges.

But before I get too deep into that, let me continue on with the concept of why you should look at movies and TV shows and specifically documentaries. In specifically in that realm. Even when it comes to books. I love biographies, and autobiographies give you a different look in it helps encapsulate a person's life.

You get to step back and you get to see it through the eyes of the writer or director or you know, producer of the movie. And you get to see from their point of view, and then you can kind of take it back to put it into your own point of view and see, okay, what do I relate with this person and what do I not relate to this person?

What can I learn from their life and what can I take away and move on my own and what can I see in other people and so on so forth?

That this is the story of our life is something that will never be able to be encapsulated in a book or a movie. But the fact that we can take an outside perspective and put it out there, and then yeah, and then be able to relive it a little bit and be able to learn something from their lives. That's priceless. And that's why I really enjoy biographies, anything of a biographical nature.

This is an interesting movie, because this mini-series takes Paul Howard, and who Paul Howard is he is the only son of Moe Howard. Now he also had a daughter who was also in the movie. But this is mostly from the perspective of Paul. Paul grew up having Moe Howard as his father.

Moe Howard is one of the main characters of the Three Stooges. And he goes through really talking about a life of living with a very famous person in a very, very odd type of famous person because really, they were the international clowns of America. They took a vaudeville show, and expanded upon it, and created something for the movie screen on an international basis that no one has ever experienced.

And then through the years, it morphed into different ideas and different concepts. But still, it's very much a clown show. That's what it is.

    It's gotta be fun.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I wanted to talk about this concept because the last yesterday's talk, we were discussing how a person can kind of fall into workaholic workaholism, I guess you would call it, you know, when you're just grinding, grinding, grinding, it's like you're never, never gonna stop.

And it's like you're trying to reach something. But pretty soon you forget what you're trying to reach, and so forth.

There's a lot of reasons why we do this and alone. And oftentimes, it's to stave off the depression that comes as soon as you slow down.

I think a lot of the depression comes from not having a very clear direction of where you're going. A very measurable idea of when you get there, also being very grateful about what you already have what you've already achieved.

Then there are just a couple of other pieces that come into it. I just picked it up, I may have had this book here for a year sitting here. I think this book came out in 05 I think I read this is, How to Be Number One In Your Business by Blair Singer.

And it's a quick book. I mean, this is just as quick as my book, 9 Ways Amazon-Proof Your Business. While I'm mentioning it, if you haven't read, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, you can go get a copy on Amazon or wherever they sell books. But you can also get a free downloadable version over at AmazonProofBook.com.

But we won't discuss that you watch any of my other videos to go into deeper amounts on that or you can go check it out.

But this one this how to be number one in your business. The subtitle is the secret to attract, retain and nurture a team that will make a lot a lot of money. And this is Blair Singer. He's worked with Robert Kiyosaki and the Rich Dad organization.

His big thing is his teaching about sales, and so forth. And I think a lot of this has had to do with him putting together a sales team if I remember, and I was just leafing through it to try and remember some of the concepts in here.

And one of the things in chapter two, he says it's got to be fun. There's a simple idea there, that's actually pretty deep. One thing I found is that most business owners, most people that are the boss, most people that get into this grind, grind, go, go mood, or rut, we should I say, if you get stuck in that situation, chances are you do not have built-in fun into your system into your business into your day to day life.

You don't have fun built-in and honestly, you need to schedule it.

If you've ever heard that concept of scheduling fun, outside of business, you know scheduling extracurricular activity. Scheduling family time, all that stuff. That's really important.

But I'm talking about within the business itself, the workday has to have elements of fun. At some point, you have to and you have to do it purposefully. You have to build it in you have to set a time to take everyone out, to go to a movie or to go have lunch or something, you have to build these things and you got to meet at somebody's house.

Every other month or so you got to do something, you go mini-golfing, I mean, do something that's awkward, strange, fun. You're fun we'll come along as soon as people get out of the norm. Just go and do something unusual.

And if you aren't surrounded by fun people,

  • Grinders: Stop Killing Yourself ☠️

Did anyone ever compliment you for being a hustler, having high-effort, or perhaps even a Gruden Grinder?

I bet you thought that was a good thing. WRONG!

    Grinders: Stop killing yourself.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I heard I heard someone refer to this before about grinding your face off. In reference to the older people that are hustlers and grinders out there, when it comes to business and there's a huge passion in doing the hustle and grind.

I'll tell you what, I'm both schools. And as you can probably guess, I agree that there's a time and place to really hustle. To really make things happen and to really, really grind things, shred things.

That place is limited, you've got to keep it to its source, do what you got to do when you got to do it, and take lots of breaks in between.

Because to go go go for years on end, there are graveyards full of people that do this.

I know, it's not an intentional suicide. In most cases, it's not people that really go out to kill themselves, you're putting in a whole lot of work, because that brings meaning into your life, or at least it seems that way to you where you're at right now, if this is you, if I'm talking to you, if you're a grinder, then it seems like that is where you're supposed to be.

But you have to take it easy in between just to get your bearings, you got to be able to take a deep breath. You got to learn to meditate or something, you got to back off and be able to get your bearings and say, okay, is this the right direction?

    Is this the right speed?

Am I digging in the right spot for oil?

Because sometimes you'll get a clue just when you're quiet enough that you may not be in the right spot that you may be a few degrees off. And switching now is going to matter a whole lot more than switching later if that makes sense.

It's that whole concept of if I've heard it said of pilots, okay, I'm not a pilot. I've never flown a plane love to someday. But right now, that's not where I'm at and I've heard that when you're on course when you're set to go from here to here, you're constantly resetting the course, or the software that's running the plane is constantly resetting course.

And if it doesn't do that, you will end up in a completely different place. If you just set the course, from when you take off and you don't adjust, you're going to end up somewhere else, you have to constantly move back and forth back and forth to keep yourself on course to make sure you're going where you want to go.

In real life, honestly, sometimes you don't end up wanting to go where he wants to go, you think you want to end up in New York, but where you really end up is in Louisiana or something like that, you know, you end up something somewhere completely different.

Because who you are partway through changes. And where you want to go your idea of where you want to go ends up changing, you got to make constant course corrections. And it's really difficult to do that if you're in the constant hustle and grind mode.

Now, I'm thinking of a particular person. So I have a friend who just partnered up with somebody and he's working with somebody who he's known a long time. But he can see that this guy who's supposedly a really nice guy, real straightforward guy, straight shooter, nice guy.

He's killing himself in business. He's just out there pushing so hard.
