    Business is all about math.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

There was a story I'm reminded of, there was a supervisor that needed to hire someone real quick. And so he had a whole bunch of resumes, he had like 300 resumes. And he, he went to his assistant and said, here's what we're going to do, I need you to take the top 50 out of this pile, just the top ones sitting on the top of the pile, just count out the top 50 take the rest, throw them away, we're just gonna call these people and go off that.

And the assistant said, Well, what do you mean, we're not throwing away 250 resumes, I mean, what if the best candidates are in there, you haven't even looked at him yet?

He said, Well, you got a good point. But I don't need a buddy with bad luck.

That idea brings out well, we go a whole lot of directions. But the thing that spoke to me about that is math.

Whether you're talking about hiring somebody, whether you're talking about bringing on new clients, or customers, whether you're talking about vendors or partners, or anything having to do business is all about people.

And to find the best people for the best spots in your business, regardless of what that is, whether it's someone you're working with directly, or whether it's somebody that you're hiring as a customer.

No matter what, there's going to be better and worse and everybody in between in terms of quality in terms of what you're looking for, from that person. And you know, a high-quality customer is going to be less of a headache, they're going to be willing to spend more they're going to behave more interest in whatever the product or services that you provide.

They're going to be happier, they're going to be less likely to complain, you know, they are going to be a good fit for what you've got.

    Okay, that's just an example.

And there's a spectrum, no matter what, no matter what you're talking about, any human being that you want to work with there's going to be a spectrum in terms of being really high end in terms of how you, you were considered these are relative terms, right?

There are no high-end people, there are people that there are certain qualities you're looking for, and there are certain qualities you're not looking for. And there's going to be a spectrum of everybody in between, from one extreme to the next.

How do you get to your best-case scenario, when you're dealing with people?

Whether you're looking to hire somebody or what have you?

    How do you do that?

Simple, it's math, it's pure math, pure statistics, you need to go through more people. And there's a whole lot of math to business a whole lot.

I mean, you go on and on about the types of situations you get into where you have to know at least some real basic math, you got to know how to multiply, divide, add, subtract, I mean if you've got those down, you're, you're well on your way.

And this is a simple concept is if you're looking for the best-case scenario, you have to test a whole lot of people.

Now sometimes that test is nothing more than an app going through applications. Sometimes that test is taking your customer through an application process to sometimes that test is doing interviews it depending on which point the more people you can have to go through.

  • 3ABN Mail Review

Brian gives his thoughts on a direct mail piece he got from 3ABN.

    3ABN mail review.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I like to talk a lot about direct mail. Because it's one of those things that most people don't pay attention to, but you can make a whole lot of money with and be able to reach your audience.

It's just one of those things that that's kind of been forgotten but still exists and cost less and has more results now than ever before, at least in my experience. And when I get direct mail that's different.

If I can see that there's some type of reaction if there's marketing involved in it whatsoever,, I like to bring it to the show.

So this is an example of a piece that I received that was complete without me asking for it. Okay, this is unsolicited mail that showed up in my mailbox, which is always the funniest.

And this says it's 3ABN and we'll dig into what this is, I had already opened it.

Normally, I'd want to open it here and show you my kind of like an unboxing video, this is an anon below being video, were to kind of get my reaction. It was marked to the resident, but it was my address, and I am the resident of this address.

So I'm going to take it and I had no other name on it.

I'm not sure what they're basing this off of or that this goes out randomly to people or if it's based on demographics, I can't really tell three ABN what's that says Three Angels Broadcasting from West Frankfort, Illinois.

So Christian Broadcasting organization, I'm to assume I'm making no opinions on the religious content here. So I've done these before where I've done religious direct mail, and I get a whole lot of comments down below, with people, either for or against.

I'm not making any opinions or judgment calls on this.

This is a piece of mail that was unsolicited, I'm just going to comment on whether it achieves what it wants to achieve.

First, let's look at the envelope itself. Now, this is something you can learn even if you're in business, or if you have a church or whatever. This is something you can learn something from this, because of how it's set up with the fact that it says a resident.

Most people, I'm telling you, most people without their names on it, they're going to take this and toss it in the garbage. These people probably already know that.

But it's important for you to know that if you're going to send out something broad, just by saying resident on it. It's not gonna it's not going to hit that well, in most cases. says it doesn't have a live stamp just says nonprofit org us postage paid. It's got pictures on it. It's so you know, it's advertising right off the bat, that goes against it.

In general, if people know what's advertising, they're going to toss it especially if they weren't expecting it. Is that so it's got the pictures it says 10 commandments something about salvation so that about Hellfire free gift for you?

    Well, that can be helpful.

If people want to see what the free gift is and it's got some weight to it. As opposed to a lot of direct mail doesn't have weight when has weight and has some thickness you can feel there's something in there.

A lot of people are going to open it just out of curiosity. So it's got that going for it.

So I opened it up what is inside?

The monetary value for content marketing.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

It's always fun kind of tossing around a few $100 bills, get people salivating or whatever out there. There's something hypnotic about cash, you know, what we're talking about today isn't cash, we're talking about content marketing.

In a very specific area of content marketing, we're talking about how to measure results. And ideally, the best way to measure results when it comes to content marketing, well, first, let's redefine content marketing.

If you're just joining us, content marketing is when you're promoting your product, your service, your cause, whatever it is that you're trying to promote, whatever you're trying to get out there, you're promoting it in the form of content, meaning you're providing some type of value or entertainment, along with the fact that you're trying to get somebody to do something.

Maybe you're trying to get them to donate to your nonprofit, or you're trying to get them to purchase your book. You know, it doesn't matter.

    That's all content marketing.

So I've got a book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, it's just a quick commercial for it. 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, it's all about how to make your business competition proof, completely competition proof, even if your competition is as big as amazon.com, you can get a free copy.

So I'm here I am selling it and I'm giving away free copy at AmazonProofBook.com.

    That's content marketing.

What you're watching right here is content marketing.

So now that we have an understanding of what that is, for the last handful of videos, we've been talking about how to apply marketing, analytics to content marketing. How do you apply them in the same way when you're dealing with a list of buyers.

The best way to be able to kind of organize them, it's been kind of a traditional thing that people have looked at over the years is a formula called recency, frequency, and monetary value.

It's, you know, RFM. We talked about recency, we talked about frequency, I want to apply monetary value back into how we handle content marketing.

Now with content marketing, in most cases, you're not going to have a direct purchase happening off of just your content marketing. In fact, kind of the way that most people are promoting content marketing today is to stretch that out as much as possible and allow people to get to know you, like you and trust you, by having videos over time, or audios over time, podcasts, books, anything that's written a blog.

Whether it's audio, video, or text, anything that you're putting out there in the form of content, having it happen over time, and therefore building up familiarity and getting people to eventually purchase from you if that's what you're trying to get them to do.

If you're trying to get a purchase, monetary value then becomes very clear in the end game.

    But what about the pre-game?

What about, if you're putting out videos, for example, doing it over and over and over again?

How do you measure monetary value as far as that goes?

There are a few ways of doing it.

    Frequency in content marketing.

I am Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Let's talk a little bit about frequency, shall we?

This is off of a conversation that we were having yesterday regarding this concept and marketing. That's called recency, frequency, and monetary value.

Oftentimes, it's the acronym is RFM and you normally apply this to sales. So in terms of sales in terms of lists of people that you're selling to, you're looking at how recent they've bought from you, how frequently they bought from you, how often how many times and then how much they're buying from you in terms of monetary value in terms of the number of the dollar, right.

So how does that apply to content marketing?

How can we apply these same things?

So yesterday, we talked a little bit about recency, how recently have they been back, not that easy thing to track when it comes to content marketing, eventually you can track it in terms of sales if that if you have a pathway for them to get to purchasing something, be a content marketing.

But let's talk about frequency, shall we?

Frequency is how often, this is something that's much more visual, especially from people who are active on content marketing in depending on what type of tracking you have, what type of platforms you're on.

If you're doing an ad, drive for your content, meaning you're paying to have people watch your content, you'll have extra analytics that you could be able to judge this by.

But the whole idea is how frequently do people watch, listen to read the content that you're putting out there. And you can see this a lot by comments.

So people that like to chat a lot and like to put comments on, on your posts, wherever they may be in whatever format they may be.

And that's going to be a really leading qualifier. In some cases, you can see views on certain platforms, Facebook, and other places. Depending on where you specifically place it and how you place it.

If you have a group within Facebook, you can track a whole lot of that a whole lot more, you can see what type of activity you're getting off of that group, that's going to be very different than if you're just throwing it out there on a page somewhere.

But once again, these things are It all depends on the amount of tracking that you have. But watching for frequency is going to be a common thing in content marketing, you're going to want to see how often that person is interacting with you how often they're doing something that's trackable.

And really the amount of people that are doing that it's going to be more powerful than anything else in terms of frequency. So hopefully that makes sense.

Tomorrow, we're going to talk a little bit about monetary value. And this is a little bit difficult when it comes to content marketing, especially if you're not selling something, but I've got a couple of workarounds with that. So come on back tomorrow, we'll talk about that.

In the meantime, go check out my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business.

It's all about how to overcome competition. It's not just about amazon.com. Amazon.com is what we use as a foil in terms of this is the enemy. This is your competition.

    Recency and content marketing.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I'm looking at my watch hand is Oh, I actually have a watch on it. Those of you who were born in the 20th century may understand that a little better than nowadays.

Not very many people walking around with watches. I guess it still happens from time to time. Growing up anytime someone looked at their wrist, it meant they're looking at the time, which is why I'm tying it back to the the recency thing. So let's get into that.

Recency, frequency and monetary value are terms that are used within marketing circles applied to a customer base to kind of qualify how valuable those customers are or how valuable a specific list is.

So how do you apply that to content marketing?

Well, content marketing is at least one step before the actual purchase. So we got to look at it a little bit differently.

Let's take recency first we're going to talk about that today. Tomorrow, we'll cover frequency, but recency, let's talk about what that means.

What that means is, how recent have they done a measurable thing within your content marketing?

So if you're talking YouTube, you're not able to really track who is doing what on YouTube, you can see the amount of views, you can see how many subscribers and able and in many cases, you can see who the subscriber is.

But that's a one time thing.

If you want to see how recent somebody is, you've got to look at for comments in general for YouTube. But depending on what you're doing, if you're doing podcasting, or anything else blogging, you're going to see other things that you can track a little better.

The idea is to look for people that are commenting, look for people that are interacting, and how recent have they done it last, the people who are doing it the most recent, the most to current day, that's going to be someone who's more valuable than have been someone who had maybe comment a lot but hasn't commented in the last six months.

You see, there's a difference between the value in those people when it comes to content marketing, but only because that tends to determine how they're going to react on the other end when becoming a customer.

So you don't have to track all these details. When it comes to content marketing, you really don't. But if you don't have any customers yet, it might be a little bit helpful to see which topics which ideas, which phrases and so forth, which headlines that you've used, which things are pulling people in and which are not causing any form of interaction.

But frequency is something you certainly pay attention to. Because that's a common thing in content marketing.

Even though so much of content marketing is evergreen, you'll put it out and it lasts forever. Whether that be podcasting, blogs, or video, the best thing is it can keep going beyond just the week that it shows up.

Hopefully that makes sense to you. Tomorrow we're going to talk as I said about frequency.

In the meantime, go check out my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. If you want to get a free copy of it. You can grab one over at AmazonProofBook.com you find out more about the book there too.

This message is brought to you by your special friends down under.

Don't feel guilty about being messy.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

One of the things that I've found through the years, this has taken a long time to get my wrap my mind around and that's that everyone has different organizing styles.

It really doesn't come from your upbringing, there's something very deeply ingrained in the mechanics of our brain that tells us how well we're going to how good we're going to be at organizing or not, or how messy we're going to be in terms of how we keep things organized, how well we keep things organized.

My life, it's been a constant struggle.

Yeah, this is I'm showing you a slightly different angle of my office, you can see some of the boxes in the background, I've got the boxes here, I've got, if you can see the rest, I've got stuff spread out all over, because I was looking for something in particular, and caused me to make a larger mess than I normally have.

You don't get to see all of that, because I don't show it all cuz it's scary to a lot of people.

I'm not trying to scare you. What I am trying to do though is just remind you, if you have a messy person in your life, it's not necessarily that they're purposefully trying to do it, or that they're lazy, or that they lack a certain skill, it really doesn't come to that it really comes to how they think.

I found that over time, certain people are automatically going to be a lot more organized than others and keep things in a nice, orderly, tidy fashion.

Maybe they throw away too many things, while other people tend to hold on to too many things.

Obviously, there's trauma and everything else that happens in your life that can make you go too far in one extreme or the other. I'm not talking about that I'm talking about just normal, everyday functioning and in business, you're going to have all different types.

If you are an organized you need to have organized people working with you, to help you to not get overrun like I am today. But you need that and you need to quit feeling guilty about being the way that you are and find somebody that's the opposite in order to help them or find someone that's the opposite in order to help you.

That's all I've got for today that a lot of this comes back to cone Asian, you can look a lot of this stuff up.

Kathy Kolbe has written a whole lot on this. Here's one of her books. The I've mentioned it before the kognitive connection. She's the inventor of the Kolbe Index, which kind of measures a lot of this stuff and how your brain works and it's just how you're born. I mean, they can measure it all the way from children, to adults.

And it's something that doesn't change in you how you relate with certain items as you work is very much an ingrained thing.

So don't feel guilty, don't make others feel guilty.

Just learn how to work around it, and move forward. That's all you can do.

That's all I got for tonight.

I've got a book that I like to talk about on a daily basis. It's 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. You could watch one of my other videos for more in depth.

  • Pricing Strategy: The Smart Way

Brian talks about Dan Kennedy's list of 9 ways people fail at pricing in business from his Price Strategy book.

    Transcription

    Pricing strategy, the smart way.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Let's talk about pricing strategy, shall we?

Because every business, if you're selling stuff, you got to price things. If you're pricing things it's based on something.

Now there, I'm setting aside all the businesses that have very strict rules on how to price things. I understand if you're in those industries, there are certain things it's legal you've got to follow.

There are ways around, those are all the things that everyone is stuck in. But I'm not gonna get into the details, because that goes a little bit deeper. We're not going to hit on that right now.

What I want to hit on is the general idea of pricing strategy, or my favorite books on this, and I'll give you a review of it sometimes the no BS Price Strategy. This is by Dan Kennedy and Jason Maher's.

Excellent book on this, like I said, I'll go into more depth on this book in the future. And I've talked about it in the past, it's excellent, it's my favorite book on pricing strategy.

So when you're sitting down and you are either pricing things for the first time, or you're reconsidering your prices, and saying, you know, maybe I can go a little higher, or maybe my stuff isn't cheap enough, you got to think about these types of things.

And my one of my favorite things in this book is right off the bat chapter one first page in the book, which is technically page three, but it's the first page of the first chapter.

This is by Dan Kennedy in the chapter titled price and fee failures. Okay, there's many ways to fail at price strategy. Here's a short list.

So there's nine things I want you to think about this. And whether you're doing these things or not the first one right off the bat, number one, pricing by textbook formulas, industry norms, or other standard means.

Is that how you came up with your prices?

That's a very common way that many people come up with their prices.

Number two, excess concern about competitors lower prices.

Once again, this is something that people fall into over and over again, I talk about this in my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business.

If you're consumed with competition, go get this book. It's a short book.

This is a thicker book, this is a thin book, it's a tiny little book that I wrote, you can get a free copy at AmazonProofBook.com.

But I'll continue with Dan Kennedy, the number three, this is these are the ways to fail at pricing, attracting customers who buy by price.

So if their main focus is price, when they're deciding whether to buy from you or not, that might be a huge mistake for you.

Not always, but it can be a huge mistake.

Number four, predetermine belief system about what they'll pay. Do you think you know what they'll pay without having actual proof without having tested the limits on how much or how little they're willing to pay for something?

    That's a big one.

Number five, permitting apples to apples comparisons. If you're comparing things, apples to apples, and there's a specific, there's a specificity to that,

  • The Answers Are Out There

Confidence, Faith, Doubt and X-Files. Sure that all goes together.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p90Kb1JgOk4

    Transcription

    The answers are out there.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I found that I came across this idea kind of accidentally just recently. In fact, that had to do with yesterday, I mentioned in yesterday's podcast that I was repairing a faucet. And I kept hitting a wall with different things, just things would not work.

It was comical, just how absurd.

The scenarios were in which they weren't fitting together and not working. And it's just one of those things, you just got to have to sit back and laugh. But you also have to have the mentality that the answers are out there and it reminds me of that x-files. If you ever saw that show. Mulder had the thing, he was always saying the truth is out there. The truth is out there.

And it's it's true, the answers are out there. But how many of us in our everyday lives get caught up in the idea that the answer doesn't exist.

There's this hopelessness that takes over a lot of people and some people live in it completely. And these are the people you got to watch out for, you got to watch out for the people that don't believe that answers exist.

When that when you're around those people, you can tell, and they'll suck you into their chaos, if you're not careful. They're like a black hole, it just pulls everything in to the center piece of nothing that they live in. And it's a sad thing.

It's not something I like to see. And if I can, I, I would love to be able to help people out of that, that mess. But it's tough, and you got to watch out for it. And they can ruin your life if you allow yourself to be pulled in to that concept.

A lot of it comes down to the idea that the answers don't exist, but they do exist. And all you got to do is that whenever you're in a situation where it just feels hopeless. And you'd have a very clear idea of what the question is that you need answered, ask the question and walk away.

And what happens, you know, what happens?

Because it's happened to you a million times?

If you ask the question, and you walk away from it, and you don't obsess over it, and you put your mind on something else, what happens? It comes to you, the answer just comes to you. You may be re you may be reading something else.

All of a sudden, what you read makes you think of something, and then the answers there or it comes out of nowhere. It has nothing to do with what you're doing or thinking about, it just pops in your head it's this and happens over and over and over again throughout your our lives.

But we choose not to recognize it, we choose not to see it for what it is. And it's the answer. The answers are always there. But they're always held just out of reach. So so that we realize we don't we don't have the answer.

The answer is out there, though. And you just got to eat if you believe that your life and you you hold on to that view that belief, you realize that believe every time you get into a frustrated situation, oftentimes it's you're looking for an answer that isn't, doesn't feel like it's in reach and then there's something that gets in our heads and makes us think there is no answer or the answer isn't going to be one that you like.

But it's a lie. It's just not true.

Reality is reality and when you find it, you're happy about it. Hopefully.

    People suck snd that's okay.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, eelcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

We like to talk about business concepts here and really it all comes back to people concepts, because in a sense, all business comes back to people. And so you were dealing with principles, strategies and tactics to help you grow your business.

I wrote a book. Well, at this time last year, just put it out, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. I've got the audio book coming out very soon. 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business.

If you'd like to check it out. It's all about how to overcome competition, you can get yourself a free copy at AmazonProofBook.com. Let's talk about why people suck.

Why I say this, because it's a great generality that anybody can use. I mean, really, some of the greatest things in the world come from people, it's just happens to be that some of the worst things in the world also come from people. And that's why people suck.

It's not just the people that are walking around right now. It's all of humanity going all the way back. I mean, people have sucked a long time. And we have all these antiquated systems that we keep using, really, because in some cases, we don't have much of a choice, it's really tough to switch over from certain systems.

I'll tell you the system that I'm thinking of that really drives me crazy.

And this is the system of home repair, specifically, and plumbing even more specifically.

So we had a situation with our kitchen faucet, and we had to replace it. So I got we have the replacement faucet and in the process of putting it together and I realized that these two parts that should automatically screw together, don't they don't screw together, one's a lot bigger than the other.

I need the adapter and where do you go for an adapter you go to Home Depot. And Home Depot's you know if you've been there, you know, it's a great place and it's a horrible place at the same time that they have.

They have some type of system where they they train. No offense to anybody that works at Home Depot. I like Home Depot a lot. And I have no personal issues with the people that work there. But somehow, the way that they train them is to run away from anyone asking a question. And so every time I look for help they like act like they don't see you and they run in the opposite direction.

Sometimes screaming, you know, which is wild. But so I was there today, three times. My wife was there once I had to return over and over again. Because I couldn't quite find the adapter that was proper, because there's no standardized adapter either.

There are some standards in terms of all the hoses and everything that go behind a faucet. But of course, I've got some one of the weird ones that isn't as common. And so even just finding an adapter to make these two things fit together was horrendous.

I won't go through all the details. But it's one of those things that took us so long and and then I get parts that when I got them here, out of the package that say a certain thing, they ended up being something completely different.

So I did end up with some I actually bought the wrong parts. Okay, I bought the wrong adapters that are meant to screw together. And one of them accidentally ended up being the righ...

    Uninspired content.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J Pombo. Live.

There comes a time, when you have to make content on a regular basis, you have to do it every month or every night, or every other night or something like that, you're going to be putting content out.

That's what content marketing is all about. It's about consistency.

If you're going to do that, you're going to reach points where you're just uninspired, the muse is not going to come to you, you just don't have what it takes to be able to go the next step. And in those situations, I'm going to highly encourage you, if you do video, or audio, press record and start talking, just start the process, if anything, talk about the fact that you're uninspired, but start the process and put it out there.

If you're writing, you need to grab a pen, you need to grab a paper or you need to get your typing pad in front of you and you've got to type out words. Doesn't need to be words, and anybody will see but you got to start going, start moving, and something will come to you.

Something's coming to me now, as we're talking about this. This is an ongoing issue that happens and when it happens you'll start to see trends as to when it happens.

So for example, I took a few nights off of doing a video. Wasn't because I was messing around it was because I had other business I was taking care of. And at the end just did not have it in me to take the next step to do recordings.

But by the time I got back and started moving and start doing more on a nightly basis, slowly but surely I get into the swing of things.

Every time it happens, though, every time I take a break, I have a little bit of stumbling to get started again, just being honest, just how it works. And since I'm a business investor, with really an emphasis right now on content marketing and how companies use content marketing to their benefit, because there's such a huge opportunity I see available for most companies in order to spread their outreach.

If you're looking to spread your outreach, you need to be in this game.

If you are in this game and you get to the point where you're uninspired, realize it's normal, it's no big deal. You got to keep on going and go the next step as best you can do your best at not skipping, stick to a schedule, keep going press through it, they're not all going to be the greatest thing you've ever presented.

You just got to put it out there, you got to start the process and keep it going day after day after day. This is how it's built.

It's not built with pure gold. It's built with all the different coins of the realm.

And so hopefully that's helpful to you.

I have a book if you haven't heard if you're new, it's called, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. It will give you more broad ideas. These are more thought-out concepts, principles that aren't going to go away. How I describe them, how I talk about them are a little different all the time.

But these 9 ways are ways that you can keep from your comp from your company being overcome by competition by the threat of competition or really even the idea of competition.

So go get a copy of this book. You don't have to buy it, get a free one. Go try it out. You can get a digital copy on my website, AmazonProofBook.com. AmazonProofBook.com.
