    Repeat their last three words.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today I wanted to go over an idea that I heard promoted by Chris Voss.

Chris Voss is the writer of, Never Split the Difference.

He is an expert in negotiations was a hostage negotiator that did all these different things. And really interesting guy, or great perspective on things, but I wanted to talk about his concept of when you're in discussion when you're in a negotiation with somebody, and especially if it's hot, hot and heated, the importance of repeating the last three words back to the person, okay. Well get into that in a second.

First, though, I want to remind you to go check out my book, I'm offering it for free right now you can get a free copy it's called, 9 ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business.

It's all about how to overcome competitive forces, and to really make your competition irrelevant. How would you go about doing that I got nine different ways to be able to do it. These are long term strategies.

So it's something that can help you I also have different sources that you can look this stuff up and be able to do more studying on, you get a free copy of this book at AmazonProofBook.com.

Let's talk about why would you repeat the last three things that somebody said to you, okay, this is this comes really in handy when you're dealing with a situation where somebody is upset, or they really want you to hear what they're trying to say. And they need validation that you heard it.

That this, try this with an argument with your spouse or with when you're in a situation where you're, you're dealing with a customer, and the customer is irate about something, or trying to give their opinion about something.

They're very engaged in the conversation, and they're waiting for a reply. Repeat back to them what they just said. And if nothing else, the last three words, okay, it'd be better if you can repeat the idea back to them and be able to go from there.

But let's say you just repeated back their last three words, just a couple things this does for you, it gives you a chance to calm down and watch your reactions, you don't want to be reacting to a person that is engaging you.

The second thing is, is it's gives you a chance to replay the words in your mind as you're saying it out loud again, so that you can hear them back and gives you a chance to kind of chew on it and think about what they meant to say, here's the other part from their perspective.

It gives them a chance to calm down and hear their words coming back to them, especially if what they said was stupid, or irrelevant, or misleading, or anything of that sort.

You'd say it back to them slowly, their last three words and it gives them a chance to chew on it to it, you also can say it back to them in the form of a question.

You want to kill my cat, you know.

You toss it back at them, and it gives them a chance to kind of add on to it. Or to think about what they just said, This calms a situation down and it allows both parties to kind of step back and say, Okay, here's where we're at, right now.

    Simple technique, very simple technique.

    It but it underlays,

The difference between emotional worry and being concerned about something.

    Transcription

    Concern vs Worry.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

This is a thing that comes up a lot with clients that I've worked with in the past. It's really easy when everything's on your shoulders when you're a business owner or you're the executive of a, of a large company.

The whole world is on your shoulders, right?

The entire business, sometimes people's entire lives, because they depend on it for employment, and the investors and everything else, and it just feels like everything's up on the back end of your shoulders.

Even then, more important than any other time is the ability to become distant, and emotionally distinct, you have to be able to separate yourself, and the circumstances out from what's right and wrong.

The only way to do that is to not worry about what's going on. One of the main reasons I bring this up is because there's this old, this book that came out, I don't know, shoot, it's probably probably close to 25 years ago now, don't sweat the small stuff. And the subtitle is, and it's all small stuff, I think, I think that's the name of it, I never read the book.

But it was an interesting concept to me, as a kid growing up this idea of don't sweat the small stuff and that everything small, it's like, it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, because

I'm like, well you've got to sweat some things, there's got to be certain things that you you know, stress has has a, there's a necessity, distress. And so if you're talking about sweating something, you got to be able to sweat things otherwise you'd never get anything done.

But then with time I learned that there's a difference. There's a night and day difference, and it's not taught. And we don't talk about it enough.

But the difference between emotionally worrying about something and being thoughtfully concerned about something, see, I can be concerned about my family, I can be concerned about my business, I could be concerned about circumstances. But that doesn't mean I need to get worried about it worries obsessive concern can always be there.

But I don't have to be emotional about it, I don't have to make it about that worry is is a selfish thing. You're making it about you when you're worrying about something you're making it about you if it wasn't about you would be concerned, you see these are the two.

I'm playing with the two definitions to kind of give some some difference to the idea that the words themselves don't matter that much. But the the idea is important.

When you worry about something, you obsess about it, you can't stop thinking about it, you're always thinking about the consequences of something that either has already happened or is going to happen, or is going to happen based on what already happened. And that's what worry is all about. It's all obsessive. It's all personal.

If it wasn't personal, it wouldn't be emotional. But if you can back away from the personal side of it, and just look at it as an issue that needs to be solved somehow, someway, somehow, and you don't necessarily have the answer. And that's okay.

But you got to watch for the answer.

That's the difference between worry and concern,

Is it time to quit yet?

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today, I'm going to show you something that my kids got in there, Happy Meals, not an actual Happy Meal Happy Meals, a term that was invented by McDonald's. I think it was invented by McDonald's. They're the ones that are known for the happy meal. But this came in the Carl's Jr. version, that kid's meal. What have you, Star pals? I don't know what they call it.

So Carl's Jr. is a fast food restaurant, here locally on the west coast. I know all throughout a lot of the other country it's referred to as Hardee's. Pretty much the same thing.

It's got that little star character, if you have them or don't have them, or seen them before, you'll recognize it either way.

It's fast food join right hamburger place and my family does not do a whole lot of fast food. It's very rare that we get fast food. And that's not to look down our noses at fast food we tend to eat at home, we try to eat a little more healthy.

Every once in a while though. For example, today's my daughter, Alexandra's birthday. And she requested that they go to fast food for dinner. And so I was out. I actually had some work to do this evening, so I wasn't with them. But they came home. And they had these stickers that came in they're happy meals.

Here's the interesting thing about these stickers are for rumble the movie.

It says see the movie and it's these monster stickers with dogs and monsters and so forth on it. I don't know if you've seen anything having to do with this movie. I had never heard of this movie before. There's the emblem for it rumble. There's no details on it other than says paramount in very tiny princess paramount animation. See the movie has some names of some of the characters here. Hi, I've got I must really not be plugged into pop culture. I don't even know. I haven't seen a single trailer for this movie.

We watch kids stuff on TV and everything. And I haven't seen anything about this movie. What is this? So my wife looks it up the kids now we want to see it we want to write. My wife looks it up. And it says it's coming out in 2022?

Well, I'm filming this in February of 2021. Okay, what are they putting this out? In, in a fast food meal. I mean, sometimes they get ahead of the game, I get it. But getting a year ahead of the game. That's a little strange.

You know, some of the kids that are going to be getting this in their male won't be won't be kids in 2022. So so we go I go and I look it up. Turns out this movie started production in in 2019, and was planning to be out it well actually, I think originally it was planned to be out in 2019 and then in 2020, and kept putting it off and put in off why COVID right.

COVID The reason and so they had to keep putting it off, or at least it's the excuse. It's a convenient excuse if you really got a bad situation that wasn't affected by COVID It's a great excuse to use if you've got bad customer service, whatever else COVID everyone's using it as a big excuse. But it is it's a serious deal.

Obviously I'm not I'm not making light of it. But look at how it's affecting everything. This movie ended up getting put off and put off and put off and put off current...

You need to be a celebrity.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

As I almost tipped over the tripod here with the show, welcome back.

I want to talk about being a celebrity and why you need to be a celebrity.

Now, who am I talking to?

I'm talking to you, if you are a business owner, if you're an executive, if you're in charge of your career, and you decide where it's going, you need to be a celebrity. And it's a very simple concept, it really is.

I took this book out, it was actually up here. That's why all these books are off to the side, I took this book out, because this is a very good book on it. There's lots of good books on becoming a celebrity.

This is a good one, I mentioned it in my book which while we're talking about it, I might as well bring up, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. If you're looking to overcome the competition, go check out my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, you get a free copy at AmazonProofBook.com. AmazonProofBook.com for your very own free copy.

So I talked about this in there, I've got a whole chapter on how to become a celebrity in my book.

Really, it's not as much how to become a celebrity, but the fact that you need to be a celebrity. And I'm amazed how many people don't understand this idea yet, especially if you have a local based business. I was at a chamber meeting earlier today.

I'm really surprised how few people have taken advantage of everything that's available to become a local celebrity. It's one of the reasons why I started doing a lot more local stuff. Here. I've started a podcast that's playing directly to local people.

Everything else, it's because I'm I'm taking some of my ideas and trying to create it on a smaller level, you can become a celebrity, even if it's just locally, in fact, it's really easy to do.

Nearly every form of online advertising allows you to localize your ads. So whether it be Facebook or YouTube, if you're running TV commercials, on on YouTube or on a lot of the local advertising units that puts out ads today, even if you're watching TV on a Roku, you're getting local ads, how are they able to do that?

Well, they know, they know what you're up, they know what you're watching, they're plugging in local stuff, just for you. You can take advantage of that if you're looking to become a local celebrity, because they're less expensive, they're a lot less expensive than then trying to advertise statewide or nationwide or anything of that sort. You can become a local celebrity, but you have to have the desire to be.

And it's not about you, it's not about ego. It's not about getting yourself all pumped up and feeling like you're special or that you're better than other people. That's not what celebrity is, celebrity is simple.

It's the mirror idea that people know who you are. That's it.

People know who you are. They may know your face, but they at least know your name. They know who you are, they don't even need to know a whole lot about you.

That's another step that's taking things beyond just celebrity when you're talking to being a celebrity entrepreneur, or anything of that sort.

You're not ready until you're ready.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today, I want to discuss a principle that is so simple, so minuscule, but so many of us miss it on a daily basis. And it affects us in our personal lives and it affects our business. I'll give you a great example of it.

I'll start with the example, I have a client who for years has had ongoing issues with stability in his business, specifically around the repeatable actions in his business that really need to be systematized. It's one of the things that I always encourage my clients to do.

It's one of the main things that I preach on a regular basis is the importance of being system reliant.

You've got to have a system you got it not system reliant, but system based, I should say, Be relationship reliant, but system based, you have to have system for those parts of your business that don't take thought that you know, has to happen anyways.

Those need to be systematized and needs to be systematized to a point to where if you lose somebody, someone else can come in and take their place relatively quickly. And it doesn't, you don't have a whole lot of time to be able to catch up or to try and figure out what happened or what that person did or anything else, you got to have system in place.

For those positions, there's always parts of the business, it's really tough. If you're a creative business owner to wrap your mind around the fact that there are pieces of your business that need to keep going, that don't require creativity.

And there are people out there that enjoy that really enjoy doing non creative work.

    That's tough.

If you're an entrepreneur, if you're a business owner, if you're the type of person that goes out lights creating stuff, it's tough to imagine people that enjoy doing the same thing over and over again, very system that they enjoy predictability of that sort of that time, but it's true.

And so for years, I've been encouraging this client to hire an operations manager to get someone in place that has the the coordination, the ability to be able to run multiple operations and make sure that all these people are doing their jobs and checking up on them and keep it on top of things before they go to haywire and taking responsibility for when things do go bad.

Years and years and years and years, this has been a thing that I've encouraged.

Finally, he happened upon somebody that had the right mindset. And I knew when I when I met this person that she had the right mindset.

When she came on board, it did not take long when she was fully on board and fully engaged, and in that position and had everything all lined up, it did not take long for everything to start running properly.

And that brings me to my point, you never get it until you get it, you're never there until you're there. And you could say something till you're blue in the face over and over and over and over again to somebody.

But until they get it, they don't get it until they understand they don't understand.

This is this has to do with loved ones in your life where you know,

Some history about the old classic comedy team Abbott and Costello and how changing your voice can help improve your message.

Changing your voice for your content.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I wanted to mention real quick a story that I heard about Abbott and Costello, the famous comedy team, if you're not familiar with them go and check some of their stuff out on YouTube, especially their old comedy routine, who's on first as a classic.

Abbott and Costello we're a comedy team that lasted from the late 30s well into the late 50s. They had a good solid 20 year run. And within that time, they put out some great stuff, they did a lot of really good material on radio.

First they did live routines and then they did radio and then they did television, quite a lot on television. Then they started putting out movies, and one of the most strangest movies for their style. But Funny, funny, funny movie is Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Definitely worth watching if you track that down and watch it.

The reason why I wanted to bring them up is because I was amazed. Well, when I was young, I didn't see a whole lot of their reruns on television. And so I happened upon them accidentally when I started getting into old time radio, old time radio programs that they used to play in the 30s 40s and 50s. And got some Abbott and Costello to listen to, and I say, Oh, these guys are funny. This is really good stuff.

Then I started talking to people who had watched them when they were alive, and they were on TV and were a thing. And they said, Yeah, they were the best!

Then you start seeing over time, you start seeing that they've had a huge impact on all of culture.

I mean, they had cartoon characters based off of them, either explicitly or specifically. They had, you know, songs written about them that were very, very big in terms of pop culture. And one thing that always kind of gotten my craw a little bit is sometimes Costello would go on and on at this really high pitched annoying voice.

And he'd sometimes he just go a bit too far into this falsetto, that was annoying. And it was really kind of meant to be annoying, but it just always seemed to be a little bit off to me and I could never quite put my finger on it.

Well, years later, I've seen interviews and everything with Lou Costello when he's talking normal. And he doesn't sound like that at all. He has a deeper voice. And they sent and I just read recently, that when Bud Abbott and Lou Costello first started doing radio, they had a difficult time with their routines because it's very specific on who's saying what.

But the problem was, they both sounded a lot alike in person, they look very different. But they sounded a lot alike on radio. So Lou Costello had to make his voice a lot more higher pitched, to be able to differentiate.

It was only because of the medium. If they were on television, if they were in a live crowd, it would not have mattered as much. But because he was able to make this unique voice. He in a sense became more popular. He became very, very recognizable.

It was very clear cut, it would just cut straight through, straight through to your ears. I mean, you could hear it coming from a mile away. And so it became a voice that people imitated his phrases and everything got pick...

How to use Valentine's Day in your marketing.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Let's talk about Valentine's day I'm recording this on Valentine's Day. But it doesn't matter whether you're watching this 20 years in the future, the same thing is true because people never change.

Here's the thing, every holiday can be used as a marketing message if you want it to, if you want to take advantage of it, it can be used.

Why would you take advantage of it even if you aren't doing anything special for Valentine's Day, even if you're not offering something special, which you should.

But let's say you're not, if you're not offering anything special for Valentine's Day, if you're not putting out anything there specific. If you don't do gifts or anything that's traditionally thought to be a Valentine's Day thing?

    Why would you do it?

It's one reason it's entering the conversation that's already going on in the customer's mind, we have certain points in our calendar that everyone is experiencing whether they want to or not.

It's everywhere around people, you could be single, you could be newly divorced, you could want nothing to do with Valentine's Day, you could hate all holidays, it's still everywhere around you, the conversations going on whether you want it to or not.

So you can hijack, in a sense, what's already going on in a person's head. You know, whether they want it to be or not, it's already there.

So you bring it up, it's already going on, you're making a connection, you're you're connecting with them on a level that that was not necessarily possible before.

But you can do it just like if you're watching this now and it happens to be near Valentine's Day or just past Valentine's Day, or, or what have you. If you're watching this, chances are you were thinking about Valentine's Day, we're thinking about how you can use this in your own business.

So that's the thing, that's the reason why you do it. So what it is, or where you go from there is relatively irrelevant gets better if you have some way of tracking, if you have some way of knowing that people saw your message, heard your message, read your message and that's the reason why they're coming to you.

So it's good to make some type of offer that's specific to the date that specific to the piece of marketing that you're putting out even if you can. So that's that's available, that's possible. That's the reason why you do it.

It's not just to be like everybody else, because you don't have to be like everybody else, you could put out an anti Valentine's Day message if you want, you could appeal to everybody who is single, or not celebrating Valentine's Day or trying their best to ignore it. You could appeal to them.

But you're still playing to a conversation that's already going on. And what you have to ask yourself is, what is your ideal customer? Where is their mind out in terms of Valentine's Day? And can you get even further in?

Beyond just talking about it beyond just acknowledging that it exists?

Where can you go from there and that's a big deal. That's a really big deal.

Some thoughts on the benefits of using multiple-platforms when distributing your content.

    Amazon-Proof Your Business https://brianjpombo.com/amazonbook/

So, why use multi formats in marketing?

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today I wanted to talk about a situation I'm dealing with right now. So one of the things that I'll do when working with a new client is we'll have an initial strategy session, it's kind of the first thing that I always do sometimes it's complimentary.

You can find out more about that in my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, get a free copy at AmazonProofBook.com, you can find out about our complimentary strategy sessions.

But in a lot of cases it's paid for you go straight to my website and pay for a strategy session you get that taken care of and we could set up a time to be able to do it.

Most of the time nowadays we're in here it is in 2021, we do a lot of it online, a lot of it over zoom or whatever format works out best for both of us. And the video chat format tends to work out pretty well because it allows me to record it.

That's really what I enjoy the best is having a recording a video recording something I can see. And something that I can go back to go over again, create different forms of, of media for it, because one thing I found is that when working with clients, everybody likes different formats.

So one of the most open formats that people are really used to nowadays online in general is video. So you can never go wrong going with video as long as you've got proper audio.

And you can understand everything that's being said, You can't go wrong with video video is a great way this is why I do this show via video every night.

Videos great, you could always use that the best thing about video is you can take it apart in pieces. So you can take the audio away from it. Some people are used to listening to a lot of audio and don't necessarily have the time to be able to sit there and watch a video. So I also have this show going out the audio an audio format.

And you may be listening to this on on your favorite podcast player. That's very common, I listened to a lot of audio podcasts that are out there. So I understand that completely, especially for busy people.

Plus, you can increase the speed you can install and so forth, you can rewind if you need to, audio is great. In addition to that, though, if especially if you're putting things together for your customer base, especially if you're using marketing, and what I'm talking about is post marketing, this is marketing, really to your clientele that you already have in place.

But one of the things that I'll do is I'll create a transcript. a transcript is great because a huge, not not not a majority, but a huge portion of people out there really enjoy reading it. They enjoy as a lot of people still enjoy printing it out and reading it, but they at least have like having it in text format so that they can read through something.

My Podcast Producer Sean E. Douglas, he works on these on a daily basis. He is very adamant about having things in transcript form for himself, when we're going through something, when we're studying something, when we're studying a client that I've worked with, he likes to have that transcript and be able to dig through that there's a lot of people that enjoy doing that.

  • Hard vs Soft Offer

Thoughts on hard and soft offers in relation to direct marketing.

    Amazon-Proof Your Business https://brianjpombo.com/amazonbook/

    Transcription

    Hard versus soft offer.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today, we're going to talk about a quote that I found. Looking through this book, this is an awesome book, if you haven't read this one before, if you're into direct marketing of any sort, this is like an encyclopedia of direct marketing. This is a 2239 Tested Secrets for Direct Marketing Success, edited by Dennis Hatch and Don Jackson.

I say edited because they take material from all over the place. This one happens to come from Dan Kennedy, one of our favorite people here we love, love mentioning Dan and his wisdom. This is all about the offer.

So if you're a business owner, or you're an executive, and you have some oversight on the offers that are made at your company, then you you always have to step back and kind of relook at it because a good offer of great offer can change everything in business when it comes to how well a product or service is performing.

So here's here's the point that Dan makes here. And it's all about making a strong offer. And he calls it a hard versus a soft offer. So offers can be placed on a line with soft on one end and hard on the other soft offer is buy this stuff, and you'll be a happier person with better self esteem. That's a soft offer.

A hard offer is buy this stuff, and your friends will swear you had a facelift. Okay, that's an actual offer that was out there. Simply the harder one is better.

The hard offer that the the one that is very clear cut as to what it's saying you're going to get the benefits are clear. It's sharp, it has a it has a punch to it. When you can define the benefits in a way that's tangible, that a person can sink their teeth into. That works better.

And so if you're if you're brainstorming new offers for the exact same item, look at that, graph them out in terms of hard versus soft. If you're able to do that, you'll come up with better quality ones. And you should always test these.

Is your business, your own worst nightmare?

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

This idea came to me, because I do run into quite a few business owners who loved their business when they got involved, they would not have gotten involved if they weren't somewhat in love of the idea of their business, or at least what their business could provide them.

But now, it's the monster that's gone out of control I have here, this is an old classic illustrated not old, it's a it's a old, it's a reprint of an old book, let's see, this is probably from the 40s or 50s. I don't have the date right in front of me.

But they used to take classic stories and make comic books out of them. And so they these are reprints of the originals. And so this was one that I, one of the stories that I've always enjoyed is Frankenstein, if you've never had a chance to read, or listen to the book on audio of the original Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, it's worth doing.

Because it's not what the movies show it to be. It's something completely different. And the main concept is that is that it's mainly about the main character. It's not about this creature that he created.

But it's about Victor Frankenstein his journey into trying to create something and having that thing that he loved, that he wanted to love having it become the very thing that he ends up hating, and then they end up getting in a battle toward the end to where they're hunting each other down to kill each other.

And so that's what a lot of times I meet business owners who they are in a love hate relationship with their business. And nowadays, I hear more often than not, I hate relationship, I hate hate relationship with their business, but they don't know what to do about it.

Because you're, and this may be you perhaps you're stuck in a situation where you've got employees that you're taking care of their like family, and you can't just leave them, you can't just if you shut the doors, it's not gonna hurt you, but it'll hurt them, you know, or you, you've maybe you still owe money to creditors and investors and so forth.

And you don't want to let them down, you want to at least get that money back out of the business. That could be you also, there's a lot of different reasons why a person gets to the point where they can't stand their business, it's not providing what they wanted it to provide.

It's not going they don't see it going in a direction that it will ever do that. But what if it could?

Is my question, what if you could take the business you have at least build it up to a point to where it could be sold to someone that could that can do a better job with it, or can have more of a love for the business or where can go from here.

Maybe someone's already in the industry that you can sell it to that they can add it to what they already have, their their portfolio that they already have going.

You know, there's a lot of different options on the ground, besides just closing it up or continuing to allow it to wreck your life. Because it is it's hurting you. And just you being self sacrificial may not be the only option ne...
