How to get good publicity from adversity.

Hi, I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

What do I mean by that?

Well, I've got a good story for you today. Because I was interviewing for my local show Grants Pass VIP, was interviewing a local legend. And he's not just a legend locally, he is a legend worldwide. And he's a legend in the world of treehouses of all things.

I got to visit the world's largest conglomeration of tree houses. All out here in Southern Oregon is out in Josephine County, a little place called Takilma, and got to go out to the out and about tree house treeresort.

It was started and it's run by a guy named Michael Garnier.

And his last name was Garnier. But the pronunciation is different than what he grew up with. But he had decided to add a little bit of the original French flair to it for the show, for all for the showmanship what he was doing. And he is a brilliant marketer in terms of getting what he calls publicitree.

Getting good publicitree for his treehouses, and he used a lot of great controversy. Controversy, as he calls it for for getting good publicitree.

And what ended up happening is he he originally had a cabin out in the woods that he was renting out as kind of a b&b, a Bed and Breakfast. This was back in the late 80s. And in then, around 1990, he said, What would really be good…he says, I get a little bit of attention with this, but not getting a whole lot.

What if I built a tree, if you will, he added had already built a treehouse for his kids. He said, What if I turn that into a place where people can stay and pay to stay the night in a treehouse just make it where it's livable, in a sense and so he went about doing that.

Well, he got in trouble with the local authorities because they said, you can't get a permit for a housing structure if it doesn't have proper foundation, in-terms of having a concrete or treated timber foundation. And so he wasn't able to get a permit.

So he just built built one up in a tree and figured out how to do it well. And started getting attention with that and they said you can't do that, so they took him to court.

And he went back and forth, and has been fighting it for 30 plus years. Back and forth with both the county and the state. He's finally at a point to where it looks better.

But during that whole time, he used it as publicity for his treehouse resort, which grew and grew to the point to where he is one of the leading figures on the world stage when it comes to treehouse is building solid treehouses, he developed the Garnier Limb, which is a metal, in a sense of limb that you can connect the tree to the tree house.

You may have seen him on TV, he's been on numerous shows all these shows about tree houses, a lot of this is all because of him. He was one of the pioneers in this entire industry.

In early 90s, he bought treehouses.com and still owns it. So you go check out his stuff. But amazing individual, it's going to be a great interview.

I mean, it was a great interview, it's going to be great when we finally get it released. So I'll let you know when that's available over at Grants Pass VIP.

    Business movie, Fake Famous.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, sorry, I was trying my best duck lips there.

Welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live. I want to talk about this movie called, Fake Famous, not sure if you've heard of it yet. It's out on HBO, one of these direct to TV deals, it's just a movie, documentary, real life story, as much as you can take it as being real life being that it's a movie, but it's really worth watching.

And it isn't very often that I'll recommend a movie when I've only watched it once. Oftentimes, the movies I watch are ones that, that once I bring to you, or once I've watched over and over again, gotten multiple things from it.

This is one of those that I've seen once, I know I'm going to reread watching it not only that, I'll probably bring you a string of videos all about this one movie.

    It's that impactful.

It's very timely. But I think also in 20 years, its impact will be even stronger. Because we'll have it to be able to look back on I think we'll see it as quite cute at that point.

But I think that where it is right now, I think there were some points that were made really well by the film. And there are some points that were not that were really missed, because the filmmakers lack of business acumen.

So what's the movie about fake famous is all about this filmmaker that basically takes three people in a group group of others, take three people, not three of the most likely people but three of the most unlikely people to ever be famous online as an influencer as one, especially the Instagram style influencer.

So very visual, very all about taking pictures and videos, and playing to a certain youth category. And in order to get to the door, their whole plan is to get to a point to where they can be what's known as an influencer, which is, are these people online that do nothing but put themselves into situations to get attention, so that they can then become ambassadors for different brands all over the place.

Make money that way and use Instagram the whole time for doing that. What they expose with this movie, is the fact of how the game it can be cheated. And that no way can it be cheated. It's expected to be cheated.

Some of the top famous people that you know, have have cheated this game and they goes into detail, I'm not going to ruin it for you.

But these three people is a very, very interesting story of what it takes to be able to move ahead, what you trade off in that process of moving head, and what you really consider to be success.

Not only that, what it takes to get attention, what it takes to become famous, what famous actually means.

Why would you want to be famous?

We talk a lot about the power of celebrity here on this show. We discuss a lot about how becoming a celebrity even in just a small little group, becoming a celebrity within a very small niche can make you very powerful in your industry and allow you to be seen allow you to stand out. Everything on this show is all about standing out.

In fact, I wrote a book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, it's all about standing out standing apart from the competition, so that you can really be the next thing so that you can gain t...

    Self-absorbed?

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

We get together on a nightly basis and we discuss, oh, anything from principles to strategies to tactics to help you win your business, whether you're the business owner, or the executive, it's for people who are in charge that are moving forward, small, medium, large sized businesses doesn't matter.

Let's talk about being self absorbed, I'll give you that. I'll tell you where this came from. This came from a quote that I heard someone use and they were discussing - and I think that's something I've heard a number of times previous - but for some reason, it just hit in a different way.

Today the guy was talking about the old TV show, there was an old TV show called The Millionaire, and in this show a millionaire would give a million dollars to a random stranger. And then you'd see what that person would end up doing it throughout the show. And so the question is, did you ever see yourself as the person who got the million dollars?

Would you ever picture yourself as a person that got the million dollars in that scenario or would you see yourself as the person giving the million dollars?

In most cases, most of us would think what if I had a million dollars? What would I do?

What if I was the one that ended up with a larger sum of money that I currently have and where would I end up going with that?

What would I end up doing with it when what we really should be thinking about is?

Who do I want to help when I have the funding to do so when I have the backing?

What changes am I going to make in the world?

Who would I pass along money to if I had more than I needed, or more than I wanted or more than I could possibly use type of thing are in your own mind at how however you would word that and then that puts a different spin on it.

And I found that with I have a lot of clients in different industries. But one thing's very common is when there's a huge amount of stress and stress and frustration.

It's really easy to see what the issue is because most of the time it's person being too self absorbed.

I really attempt to help my clients to set very clear goals and to stick to them. To watch them all step every step of the way.

The other end of that, though, is when a person is so caught up with where they are going, that they are not, they have zero focus on anybody else. And so they don't care about their employees, they don't care about their business partners, they don't care about their vendors and the other people they do business with.

And that will lead to absolute misery and frustration. Because there's only so much you can do for yourself. There's only so much that you can consume on your own. If you have any decency, you'll never be satisfied in that situation.

Life is about helping other people and oftentimes, if you find yourself in a in a state of frustration and a feeling like you can't get ahead, you can never have enough than most of the time, it's because you're self absorbed. And it's not a bad thing.

It doesn't mean you're, you know, doomed to the pits of Hell, I don't think that's true, I think the case is,

What is the most unbelievable secret that experts want kept hidden?

Well, we're gonna get into it right now. Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today, we are going to uncover something that if you can wrap your mind around it, it will save you a whole lot of time and money and effort. But it will also allow you to be able to look at things from a different angle, because there's a lot of experts out there.

And if you're an expert or someone that wants to be seen as an expert in your field, then you just need to understand this one, this one thing is going to save you a whole lot of time in thinking that you need to be original or anything else. Here's what it basically comes down to experts when you've been in the field for some time.

Whether you're some type of celebrity expert, or you're some type of very niche expert, you deal in a very specific area. The thing that you bring people in on the way that you gain attention is oftentimes on very specific little items, very specific things that people go after. I'm thinking, this just popped in my head, a Perry Marshall wrote some great books on Google AdWords, he wrote the Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords, he wrote one on Facebook marketing, he got really into online advertising, and became famous for those books and all of the courses that he put out regarding those.

Over time, the people that do really well go beyond those specific items, the whole tactical deals that they have. And they stretch it out and into more strategy and eventually go into deep seated principles. Perry Marshall is a perfect example of that I bought a whole lot of his material over time.

Some of his stuff is extremely deep and goes really deep into principles of what I mean down into into faith and into the his perspective on the universe and physics and all this other stuff that you wouldn't expect from somebody who's the AdWords guru, right? But it's there. And everybody who is an expert that goes to the next level and really makes a decent income added and is able to build out a really strong following goes from something very specific to something very, very broad and big and more principle based, something that is very truth oriented. Well, here's the secret that's not really the secret unto itself. The secret is, is that that real, heavy duty truth based stuff, when it's really true. It it goes across all boards, and oftentimes they can present it as this is the truth about the health.

This is the truth about psychology, this is the truth about faith. And it doesn't matter where you go. If you actually gain the truth in one area, you are gained the truth, a principle that can be applied to all other areas.

We really think we've got an entire piece of our society that to this day, it's scary, how strong this is, how strong the scientist is, or the doctor, or the the studied person in a specific area as if they they have some magical knowledge. It's very scary, because it puts a whole lot of us in an entire generation.

I've talked to a lot of people coming from the younger generations, for millennials to the Gen Zers.

There's very much a mentality that's been spread, that there are certain people with secret knowledge that you can't pass possibly understand, unless you've gone to school and done studying and all this other stuff.

Brian shows off his old, beat up version of How To Win Friends & Influence People while sounding really smart about stuff.

    How to interest people.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I got here a copy of a book that's very rarely read, though often talked about, called How to Win Friends & Influence People, by Dale Carnegie. This original book came out in 1936, I believe is the date.

This copy I've had you tell it's it's old. It's beat up. I got this as one of the first, I guess you could say success based books. I bought this in the late 90s. It was actually a friend had it recommended to him from another friend from a kind of a mentor figure. And I figured, well, well, that sounds good, let me grab it.

It's got one of those titles, that is misleading, because it sounds very manipulative and all of it. And honestly, a whole lot of the deal with this book could be used for manipulation sake and I think that's why it's gotten a bad rap.

But if you could look at it from a decent perspective. And if you used it for the forces of good versus evil, I think you'd get quite a lit lot out of it. Although it's it's written in a very older style, more educated, not as direct as you would get from most books today.

But each chapter has a little lesson that gets reviewed at the very end, it's really simple and straightforward. So the one I want to mention to you is this chapter and this isn't just about one on one, relationships, which is what this book is mainly about this, this, the same concepts can be applied to your marketing or what have you, and especially this one how to interest people, this was all facts, chapter five, or it's part five, or what, because it's kind of broke up into different sections.

It is chapter five of part of the six ways to make people like you section, it's funny the way it's titled, which is part two is chapter five of part two of this book. And what it will normally do is it goes through like a little story or whatever. But I just liked the lesson of this. In the very end, it says that the principle number five is talk in terms of other people's interests.

This is really a deep concept, because it's very simple. It's very plain spoken and yes, it can be used for manipulation. But really for any form of communication, you should be talking in the person's interest that you're talking to. I

f you're not talking in their interest, technically, you are boring them automatically, if they are not interested about what you're talking about, you should not be talking and you should consider their interest first versus what you are trying to communicate. And doesn't matter in what situation this is.

But if you can take away from the situation of being a business owner, or being an executive, and you're in charge of the messaging that's going out via marketing and other forms of PR and communication from your, from your company, then this is really what it's all about.

It's talking in terms of the other person's interest and so often, when it comes from a business perspective, we're thinking about what do we want to say?

What message do we want to get out there?

What product do we want people to buy?

Instead of looking at the customer as being the central figure, or the prospective customer, or what have you,

Thoughts on direct mail using postcard campaigns and the value of A/B Testing.

    Direct Mail, form or function.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

When I'm talking direct mail, today, I just happened to be talking about postcards. Okay.

This comes from a discussion that I was having earlier today with one of my clients.

So we were talking about this because they were designed a postcard to drive traffic to a webinar, which is a great idea. If you haven't used direct mail, to get people to do something online, it really is quite useful. Okay, it all depends on how you go about doing it and what type of results you're looking for. That all plays into it.

But it's something worth considering, especially if the whole idea of why you're getting them somewhere online is to get money. All right.

So in the process of developing anything that has any creative aspects to it whatsoever, you're going to oftentimes have a discussion that comes up of form versus function. In other words, does it matter whether something looks good or not, if it functions properly.

So she had produced a beautiful postcard to be able to go out. And I was looking at some of the functional elements and wanting to change some of them. And I'll just give you an example. That ugly, can work just as well, if not better than beautiful.

This is the thing, I don't really have much of an eye for beautiful. Now, sometimes it can go the other way around, these things all have to be tested, right. But this wasn't a situation where there's going to be an A B test of back and forth, where you send off and when a B test is when you have two different versions going out, and you see what type of results each version gets.

We weren't going to be doing that. So it was kind of a one off deal.

And so I'll show you this is a I've talked about Dan Kennedy's group, the N0BS Inner Circle, they send me things in the mail once in a while, look at how ugly this thing is.

So there's a little picture showing you what you can get. They're trying to get you to do this on demand things. So they have they show pictures of all this on demand stuff. But it's all words, all words you got you got a headline, a little bit of text. And the text is horribly ugly. It's a, you know, it's almost like typewriter type text, okay.

attempting to get a very specific reaction to get a very specific call to action, something very specific to be done online. So this is a very similar situation that I was dealing with earlier today.

When you're dealing with that creativity is oftentimes very an emotional thing to begin with. And beauties in the eye of the beholder. So it all depends on who's looking at it. And one thing, if you're using a postcard, no matter what it's seen as commercial, right?

I mean, something is unless you're making it appear to be a personal postcard, which don't happen as often as they used to, you know, people send in postcards, on vacation, and so forth. And if you're getting it at work, it's probably not one of those anyways. So unless you're trying to hide it and make it appear to be something that it's not, it's going to be considered commercial to begin with.

That's an automatic reason for someone to take it and chuck it as soon as they realize that it's a commercial.

Thoughts on resentment and gratitude and it's power in your life.

    Reverse gratitude.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Had a quick concept for you today and it's the idea that I call reverse gratitude.

I think that a whole lot has been placed on the idea of having gratitude. And I think it makes a lot of sense.

It kind of can be taken too far, in the same way that positive thinking can be taken too far. So we think that to make up for negative thoughts, we need to be more positive and it's true to an extent. But really, we need to just quit being so negative.

In other words, giving power to negative thoughts, thoughts, okay.

Gratitudes the same way, in a lot of ways. Gratitude is one of those things where you focus on the things that you're thankful for. And I think people can get too focused on the things they're thankful for, and miss reality around them.

Now, it's not as important, it's important as things come up in your mind that you can be thankful for in front of your face, that you acknowledge it, give thanks, but move on.

I think that the real problem is reverse gratitude.

The real problem out there is all the things that we are not thankful for, and that we despise, that you absolutely resent about your life. That's the problem.

We all talk about gratitude and hopes that if we, if we tip the scales far enough, this way that the other scales will go up. No, that will, we'll quit being so resentful, if we are super happy about everything that's going on.

But I don't a lot of people that will say that they've got lots of gratitude. But they also complain the worst. They are constantly looking at the negativity around them, and getting caught up in that.

They think that by being by having gratitude over the good things that that makes up for them being bitter over the bad things, it doesn't. In my own experience, I can tell you that I it's not until I stopped. As best as I can, I can say I mean is still still working progress. But it's not until I stopped hating the bad things that I could truly love the good things, and I don't have to push myself to do it.

It's just, it becomes a natural thing. So watch yourself for reverse gratitude. Watch that when you are resenting sit situations in your life. You're resenting the curses, instead of respecting the blessings, I guess you would say, you know, when things happen when they happen around you, that that little recorder that plays in your mind that says, oh, here's another thing, here's one more thing happening, here's the big guy, you know, pushing his boot into my head again, you know, rubbing my rubbing my face in the dirt. If you can pull back from that mentality, the thoughts that we all have it, but if you could pull back from it, and not take it so seriously, and not get caught up in those stupid thoughts that pass through our minds.

I think you'll be a lot more happier. And I think gratitude will be a natural, it will naturally bubble up. effervescence, you know, come up out of nowhere, when you just quit hating on everything you do that I know for myself, it's made a big difference through the years over the last 20 years or so.

I've it's been a it's been something that I've grown in. And I have enough perspective that I can look back and see wher...

    Protecting yourself from distractions.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

It's funny I like I like using props, they're an easy way to be able to start communicating an issue. But I'm not gonna wear these the entire time. It's just a prop.

The idea is protection. How do you protect yourself, these are some basically, I think these are technically painting glasses that you put on to keep stuff out of your eyes. I've used it for landscaping, and for shooting my gun, and so on, so forth. So there, there you have it.

It's interesting thing about eye protection, though, it's you don't need it until until what happens. It's like everything that takes eye protection, you like do I really need to wear these, especially if you're not used to wearing glasses, if you're not a person that wears glasses on a regular basis and it always seems like an extra thing until it's actually needed.

And distractions are one of those things that we don't ever really call it a distraction when it's happening. Otherwise, it wouldn't. If it was obvious, it was a distraction. We want to go for it but we get pulled into it. And then long after we're mired down in it, we realize, Oh, it's a distraction, I'm in a distraction.

So what makes a distraction, what defines a distraction?

I'm going to give you ways to be able to catch it ahead of time. One way is to get your whole team on board. I know this is a common theme that I've been bringing up a lot over and over again, it's because nearly every client I have has this issue. And that's an issue that I have myself.

If you have a team, if you have anyone that you would consider a team member.

I don't care if you're a solopreneur you've got your own business and you have a wife, or you have an assistant or anybody that you communicate with, bring them in to help keep you on track. Because it's very common to get off track.

It's so easy and this doesn't matter what personality you are, it's very easy to get off track. Certain personalities or certain people with certain combinations, sometimes we'll get too focused in one thing.

And then that way, they will go too deep on something when they need to go a little bit wider. But that's a distraction unto itself.

The more common distraction that you'll see, though, is things that have nothing to do with the end goal. So if you have teammates of any type, you need to define help, or to show them what your end goal is, where you're looking to go with something, what your main focus is, what time you're looking to get there. And give them the power to point it out.

Without you flying off the handle to point out when you're doing something that doesn't appear to be towards that goal. You have to have this in place with you have it in place and you start practicing it and you start catching yourself and having them catch you and don't be offended by it.

Even though they may not understand maybe it is towards your goal. But most of the time, it's stuff that has nothing to do with our goals.

So yesterday's episode we were talking about apps about building an app and how it's very, very common for companies to go off and build an app because they think they need an app, because it's a nice shiny object to get caught up in.
