Matthew 5:13-20

On a smoke-filled Mt. Sinai, Moses received the Law of God. At the time it was nothing short of transformational for the people of Israel. Yet despite having a clear & unique moral code to follow, the nation rejected God and descended into chaos time and time again. Over a thousand years later, Jesus ascended a new mount to address their ancestors. Jesus called them, and now calls us, to a law that goes beyond letters and heads straight for the heart. Hope Everlasting

Micah 5:1-4

700 years before the birth of Jesus, Israel faced the threat of yet another invasion. Despite the fear of uncertainty, the prophet Micah declared that Hope Everlasting was coming from Bethlehem. While our world today is full of troubles and pains, Christmas declares that there is more to the story than what meets the eye. Bethlehem's Hope Everlasting lives on today.

In Matthew 5:9 Jesus doesn't say happy are the peaceFUL, or even happy are the peaceKEEPERS - He says "Happy are the peaceMAKERS." While that may sound great, the problem is peacekeeping is messy. Our aversion to risk and discomfort means that no one naturally bends towards peacemaking yet when we lean into the way of Jesus we find new life for all. In verse 8 of Matthew 5, Jesus gives a stunning promise: that if we can become pure in heart we will see God! In this modern world filled with corruption, evil and temptation - how is it even possible to attain purity in heart? How can we find unity in our hearts when it is far too easy to become divided in focus?
