Ben, who joined the Army at just sixteen, straight from a small village in Suffolk. What followed was a huge cultural shift into a ‘laddish’ environment where alcohol — and later drugs — became a way of coping with mental health struggles. That path led to serious personal consequences, including the breakdown of his marriage.

During COVID, Ben reached a turning point. He chose sobriety, began focusing on his mental wellbeing, and started rebuilding his life. Today, he’s passionate about breaking the stigma around men’s mental health — and as a father, he’s determined to raise his son in a way that encourages emotional openness rather than silence.

Fourteen years ago, they were diagnosed with complex PTSD and, after struggling to find effective support, turned to art as a natural form of therapy. What started as a personal outlet became a community movement — Drawing Conclusions Art — a non-profit that promotes creativity as a tool for mental wellbeing.

"Say It Lad" is a new initiative giving men a safe space to share their thoughts, feelings, and stories about mental health — anonymously, via WhatsApp. These messages are then shared online to help the sender, and potentially support others going through similar struggles.
