Bev Smith and William Hosea welcome guest Dr. John McCluskey, professor emeritus of Indiana University.

    PART ONE
In the post-Civil War South, three men are tied to each other by history and faith, but are also bound by secrets. A badly wounded Jewish Confederate soldier returns home at war’s end to find that his family has fled to the countryside. Remaining in the city mansion are two former slaves, also raised by his family as Jews. With Passover upon them, the three men unite to celebrate the holiday, even as they struggle to comprehend their new relationships at a crossroads of personal and national history.

The theatrical presentation of The Whipping Man stars Brandon Wentz, Wardell Julius Clark and Alfred Wilson. The performance takes place at the John Waldron Arts Center Auditorium from Feb. 7 -22. We have invited Dr. John McCluskey, professor emeritus of Indiana University to come on and recap a talk-back he led for the audience and cast members on yesterday afternoon with the actors.

William Hosea welcomes guest Richard Coleman, director of the Center for Career and Employer Relations at Vincennes University.

    PART ONE
From the pages of Diverse Issues in Higher Education we read that, “There is significant emphasis placed on the retention and success rate in community colleges among African-American and Hispanic males. Many are experiencing great problems in our society and within the social structure.”

Many African-American and Hispanic males experience academic distress in colleges and have frequently been described in research studies as: (a) being from a low social academic background; (b) being a minimal academic achiever; and (c) possessing a general low self-concept.

Major research efforts have identified a number of factors that tend to impact minority males’ decision to drop or even stop-out of colleges. To explore this further, we have invited Richard Coleman, director of the Center for Career and Employer Relations at Vincennes University, to join us to discuss his pending doctoral research into these alarming patterns titled : Resilience in African American Male College Students.

    PART ONE
Back on November 5, 2013, the public was invited to explore alternatives to the war on drugs. The event, co-sponsored by the Monroe County Branch of the NAACP, gave a prevailing thought that there is much evidence that the War on Drugs is, at least in effect, a war on Black males, as shown in the book “The New Jim Crow”, by Michelle Alexander.

Joining Bev and William are Local Bloomington Attorney Guy Loftman, is a member of the Legal Redress Committee of the Monroe County Branch of the NAACP,  and Bring It On! contributor Cornelius Wright to share in a discussion on how damaging illegal drug usage is on black males.

Bev Smith and Cornelius Wright joined Dr. Roderick Paige.

    PART ONE
On January 21, 2001, the United States Senate confirmed Dr. Roderick Paige as the 7th U.S. Secretary of Education. For Dr. Paige, the son of a principal and a librarian in public schools, that day was the crowning achievement of a long career in education. Born in 1933 in segregated Monticello, Mississippi, Dr.  Paige's accomplishments speak of his commitment to education. He earned a bachelor's degree from Jackson State University in his home state. He then earned both a master's and a doctoral degree from Indiana University.

Dr. Paige began working with students early in his career as a teacher and a coach. He then served for a decade as dean of the College of Education at Texas Southern University (TSU). In this position, Dr. Paige worked to ensure that future educators would receive the training and expertise necessary to succeed in the classroom. He also established the university's Center for Excellence in Urban Education, a research facility that concentrates on issues related to instruction and management in urban school systems.

In 1994, Dr. Paige left TSU to become superintendent of HISD, the nation's seventh largest school district. Inside Houston Magazine named Dr. Paige one of "Houston's 25 most powerful people" in guiding the city's growth and prosperity. In 2001, he was named National Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators.

During his tenure as Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education from 2001 to 2005, Dr. Paige was a fierce and innovative champion of education reform who led the way in setting new standards of achievement for all students in our education system. He spearheaded the implementation of the historic No Child Left Behind Act, with its goal of reinvigorating America's education system.
