Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Giant Rooks over Zoom video! 

They should be on tour with Milky Chance in the USA and they should be starting their own tour at the biggest venues in Europe. Of course, all of this has now been postponed. And when it comes to Giant Rooks, there really shouldn't be any shoulds. After all, the band has left nothing to chance in its meteoric rise over the last few years. Yet instead of standing on stage, Giant Rooks are probably sitting around their flats in Berlin in self-isolation and discussing in video conferences how they can put the finishing touches on their debut album “Rookery,” which will be released on August 28th, 2020. Before then, their second single "What I Know Is All Quicksand" will be released – a piece of music that contrasts strongly with their first-released indie track “Watershed", but one that still stands up on its own.

Having a deep respect for a debut album is wise. After all, there's often no shortage of impulsive decisions at the beginning or spontaneously made recordings that don't live up to expectations. One thing is clear: Giant Rooks won't be doing that with their debut album “Rookery.” It’s going to be a perfect debut. A debut that sets every note in the right place, a composed album with the right length and the right songs. "We feel ready for this album,” says the band. “Our expectations for the debut were huge. We had to find our sound on stage and on the EPs (The Times Are Bursting The Lines 2015, New Estate 2017 and Wild Stare 2019).”

With "Rookery", the band freed themselves from the idea of how things are "supposed" to be done. The result sounds unified and whole – sounds like 2020 – and spans a frame of reference that's at least unique in German-speaking countries. The beats always sound like Kanyesque hip hop and the song structures even occasionally bring Bob Dylan to mind. The soundscapes are influenced by Bon Iver. The band playfully combines modern influences with classical structures and classical sounds with modern song structures. When it comes to playing music, as well as listening to it, Giant Rooks aren't looking to fit into any one genre or emulate anyone. “You have so many opportunities to discover new music, artists like Celeste or Joy Crookes, not to mention soul. That's been a huge influence for us,” says singer Frederik Rabe. In terms of content, it's an album that looks questioningly into a world of unrest and isn't looking to offer simple answers. Who am I? And how can I find my role in this world?

The band sees “Rookery” as a space of opportunity and understands the music as a place that could become a home. It's about beginnings, a fresh start, which is accompanied by euphoria but still develops tentatively from a comforting familiarity. The title materialized suddenly… "It felt completely right after it was said for the first time. It was clear to everyone that this is the name of the album!" While the outside world stands still, work continues for Giant Rooks. There's so much to do despite the curfew. The album work needs finalization and the track list, too. It’s set to be a perfect debut, this "Rookery".

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kandle over Zoom video! 

BC-born singer-songwriter, Kandle Osborne, is catharsis personified. Embodying equal parts cabaret chanteuse and ambitious rock singer, she’s covered everything in her inky blues-influenced songs from heartbreak, sexual assault, chronic illness and a loss of power, providing an immense release for her listeners with her treacle-dipped voice. Kandle discovered a true love for music in Nancy Sinatra, Billie Holiday and Shirley Bassey to name just a few. Strong influences from the fierce female greats of a gone era, Kandle writes, and sings exclusively with her heart; something so often void in the modern era of over produced perfection. Kandle sings honest and raw, vulnerable yet empowered, never afraid to pen, even life’s heaviest moments.

After years battling through the infamously cold and stark music industry and finally escaping the shackles of sour recording contracts, Kandle broke free from her label ties in March of 2020, and suddenly found herself in full control of her music.

In the summer of 2020, Kandle dropped a brand new EP titled, Stick Around and Find Out – her first release as an independent artist.

Now, Kandle is setting her sights on her next project – her upcoming fourth album. While the new album – which is currently untitled – may have been recorded under extraordinary circumstances (while under lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic), Kandle streamlined her focus and vision. She steps into her self-worth with the confidence of a true veteran who is capable of taking any situation and finding an opportunity for a deeper emotional connection. If her past has provided catharsis, her future is all about empowerment.

The recording process then began in March of 2020, only a few short days before the JUNO Awards in Saskatoon were cancelled and the music industry was turned on its head.
It became very serious very quickly. Asthe days went by, recording music wasn’t enough to keep the talk of pandemic from seeping into every conversation, obviously. We definitely had a few moments of panic and fear and trying to figure out safe places to stay, who was willing to let us quarantine on their couch, where to get food. But the record became our small beacon of light in the chaos of uncertainty. By the second week there were just four of us left and we just basically self-isolated together. We were referring to ourselves as a quaranteam; we were there every day and night and eventually the studio owner called us and told us to stay and said we could bring a mattress in there if we needed to. We didn’t end up doing that, but that’s how into it we got. We’d go into work mode for 14 or 15 hours straight and just sleep and repeat.

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Alexander 23 over Zoom video! 

Rising singer/songwriter/producer, Alexander 23 recently dropped his highly anticipated tender track “Cry Over Boys” was featured on New Music Daily on Apple Music. The breakout artist first shared a clip of the song on TikTok and fans quickly became captivated by the attention-grabbing lyrics such as “Aren’t you tired of getting hurt? Aren’t you sick of making it worse?” and “You cry over boys you know will never cry over you.” After teasing the tear-jerking song on the social platform, it quickly garnered nearly one million likes across each clip. Of the track Alexander shares “This song is about a loop I think a lot of people are stuck in. Romanticizing romance at the cost of their own sustainable happiness. I hope it can help people break out of that cycle.”  In addition to the emotional journey the record takes you on, Alexander shares an accompanying visual directed by Stefan Kohli (Ariana Grande, LANY, Trippie Redd).

 Late last year Alexander shared various tracks including “Nothing’s The Same” on which he teamed up with Jeremy Zucke “Brainstorm” a vulnerable track highlighting the struggle with mental illness as well as “Caught In The Middle” which Variety called “ fairly irresistible” and “IDK You Yet,” his biggest track yet. The song caught the attention of Rolling Stone, Billboard, Paper, amongst others and led to his national TV debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Today the track has been certified Gold by the RIAA and has amassed nearly 300 million streams globally.

ABOUT ALEXANDER 23: Chicago native, Alexander Glantz is the sole creative force behind Alexander 23: he writes, records, and produces everything in his self-built Los Angeles studio. Making music since the age of 12, Alexander spent his teenage years refining his craft playing in bands. Today, the multi-instrumentalist infuses his indie-pop sound with effortless falsettos, intimate guitar plucks, and up-tempo drums to create something entirely his own. In March 2019, he made his debut with “Dirty AF1s,” which premiered as Apple Music’s Bop of the Week and landed on Spotify’s highly-coveted New Music Friday playlist. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Joshua Henry over Zoom video! 

No one knows the way a song cuts straight to the heart quite like Joshua Henry. He brilliantly pairs themes of vulnerability, love, and hope born out of the pandemic on his debut EP, Guarantee via S-Curve Records/BMG. The music showcases his immaculately powerful voice and his intelligent storytelling background, and Henry’s full voice--from low to high, from crooning to rapping. With Grammy-winning producer, writer, and composer Theron “Neff-U” Feemster (Michael Jackson, Dr. Dre, Justin Bieber, Doja Cat) on board as a close collaborator and producer on Guarantee, the EP jumps through a kaleidoscopic spectrum of sounds, all anchored by Henry’s undeniable, unparalleled vocals.

“This EP is full of my heart, but I also want people to jump and groove to it, to feel it cerebrally, spiritually, and bodily,” Henry notes. “There was a blank canvas that took me back to when I was seven years old, just writing from my heart, with nothing to lose.”

Henry made a name for himself in his Tony-nominated turn in Scottsboro Boys and as Aaron Burr in the first touring company of Hamilton, but his passion for music was rooted in childhood. As he progressed through Broadway, TV, and film roles, Henry’s heart beat out rhythms, his voice ringing with clarion emotion. But the entire time, he longed for an outlet to express his own story. “I’d been writing songs for nearly a decade, but my incredible wife, Cathryn, pushed me to not waste any time and follow that passion," Henry recalls. “I continue to love acting, stepping into someone else’s shoes, but this year made one thing super clear to me: We don’t know what will happen tomorrow, so I had to really give it my all.”

As New York was plunged into lockdown, the inspiration and the process of art became intertwined. As his wife took on nursing shifts caring for COVID patients, Henry would sneak into the music room in the family’s apartment to record vocals. “It was an amazing exercise in watching something grow through constraints--to know what’s possible if you have the right people supporting you,” he says. Whether walking through Central Park or a conversation over breakfast, time with his wife and son were particularly influential on Henry’s songwriting. “In the past I’ve been a really private person, but they gave me freedom to break my chest open, to get into conversations about self-discovery and vulnerability,” he explains.

The EP’s lead single “Hold Me” reflects the immense emotional depth and love that comes from opening oneself up to intimacy. An exploration of balancing the relentless pursuit of a dream while needing to ask for love and support, the track pairs Henry’s regal falsetto with a rippling and kinetic neo-soul production. Tight wordless harmonies wash over the rubbery bass and clap-along percussion, as Henry righteously explores his own deepest fears: “At the crossroads, hoping that you’ll hold me/ Don’t let go, don’t let go.”

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tom Higgenson over Zoom video! 

Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, IL, Tom Higgenson is best known as the lead singer of the Plain White T’s, most famous for their acoustic hit, Hey There Delilah. The band received two Grammy nominations for the song, and quickly achieved notoriety around 2006. More recently, the T’s released an independent record in 2015, American Nights, and a synth-heavy pop record in 2018, Parallel Universe.
 
The latter album inspired Tom to branch out on his own in a solo project he named Million Miler. His 80’s-inspired synth-pop tracks are straight out of Stranger Things or Back to the Future. Million Miler has released six singles so far, but keep an eye on him because big things are coming this spring….
 
Long before “Milly”, though, Tom started a punk rock band with fellow Plain White T, Dave Tirio. They joined forces with their childhood pals, Darren and Eric Vorel, to form TLB, formerly known as That Lying Bitch. Now a trio, Higgenson and the Vorel brothers released TLB’s sophomore album, Blood & Sand, on Halloween.
 
Beyond TLB and Million Miler, the label also writes with Chicago-based dream pop duo Fairview and dance pop solo artist Jessica Jarrell, all of whom are signed to Tom’s record label, Humans Were Here. 
 
Currently, Tom can be found hosting a weekly solo live stream on the Plain White T’s Facebook page, a show he has dubbed “The Wednesday Club”. Fans vote on a set list each week, from Grammy-nominated hits to no-longer-available deep tracks.

John O’Callaghan - frontman of The Maine - goes by another moniker for his musical solo endeavours, John The Ghost. The project made its first musical appearance back in 2016, when his EP Sincerely, John The Ghost was released. Since then, he’s kept busy - releasing three albums and touring the world with The Maine. 

Now, O’Callaghan gears up for his debut full length record as John The Ghost. “What started out as a single song, turned into 3, turned into 7, which all turned into my debut 9 song album,” O'Callaghan explains. Fans can hear the first two singles off the record - “Rolled Down Window” and “Live Once” - across all major streaming and digital download platforms now. 

Alongside the announcement comes a brand new John The Ghost merchandise line, including pre-order bundles for fans wanting to collect the new album on vinyl. New Orleans rapper Pell announces glbl wrmng vol. 1 — a new conceptual project out February 19th. GLBL WRMG is a new NOLA-centric collective launched by Pell and music professional Nate “Suave” Cameron of 20+ local artists and producers including Malik NinetyFive, Jzzle, Jelly of Tank and the Bangas, Lil Iceberg, Kr3wcial, and more. glbl wrmng vol. 1  is an ode to the strength and resilience of their beloved hometown and emphasizes the city’s heroic survival.

“I wanted to make records with all my hometown friends that didn’t have to be just Pell records that could showcase the talent of New Orleans and what we had to offer,” Pell says. “I wanted to executively produce this record and then give us all something to call back on whenever we were on the road or outside of the city so that we could keep connecting and building together.”

glbl wrmng vol. 1 aims to capture the beauty, vibrancy, and, most importantly, resiliency of New Orleans — a city that can attest to the harsh realities of climate change — while simultaneously showcasing the artists and producers who are reinventing (and heating up) the city’s sound. GLBL WRMNG will be rolling out community initiatives involving recycling and gardens to give back to their local neighborhoods throughout the year. 

The collective’s aptly titled debut “504” ft. Pell, Kr3wcial, and $leazy EZ is out today. The vibrant video is picture-perfect New Orleans and pays homage to local producer Niyo Davinci who passed away last year. An eclectic cast of characters dancing amidst beautifully colorful backdrops, the visual flaunts jovial, big band maximalism.

As part of the “504” YouTube premiere, proceeds of the streaming will go toward Concerned Citizens of St. John Parish, a non-profit organization 30 minutes outside of New Orleans. The town has the third-highest COVID -19 death rate in the nation (among other shocking statistics) and the nonprofit's mission is to raise awareness about the high levels of Chloroprene in the atmosphere while providing solutions for the poor air quality.

About Pell
Growth is ingrained in Pell's nature. Since taking the industry by storm in 2014, the electric New Orleans native, born Jared Pellerin, has continued to expand his sound and musicality. His stellar Floating While Dreaming debut garnered attention and praise from press across the board, including FADER, Billboard, XXL, Complex, among others.. After touring with G-Eazy, in 2015 he released LIMBO, an EP produced by TV on The Radio’s Dave Sitek, developing his "experimental soul" sound to set him apart from his peers. Pell released his next EP, girasoul (4.5 million streams to date) via Payday Records in December 2017. The project featured collaborations from Saba, Imad Royal, and Vérité. Later in 2019, Pell released his second full-length album "Gravity," an ode to his hometown of New Orleans, featuring performances by PJ Morton, VÉRITÉ, Ambré, and Malik Ninety Five. The album documents his growth and pulls inspiration from different life transitions such as heartbreak and longing. Pell has toured with Kehlani, PJ Morton, Doja Cat, Brasstracks, Tory Lanez, and has performed at prestigious festivals like Hangout, Firefly, Pemberton.

Most people keep personal, embarrassing, and crazy thoughts to themselves. Annika Wells isn’t one of those people.

She doesn’t just express these thoughts out loud either. She peppers them through her songs with the kind of honesty you expect from your childhood best friend. In her music, she’ll rattle off bucket list ambitions, refer to herself phallically, or write about a doomed romance (with that same ex as her cowriter). After racking up over 100 million-plus streams, she welcomes everyone into her mind and heart on a series of 2021 singles and her forthcoming debut for Vol. 1/Epic Records.

Born north of San Francisco in the town of Sleepy Hollow, CA, music grabbed her and never let go. Due to an extra neural pathway, she experiences sonic earworms—a rare phenomenon where a different melody remains stuck in her head at all times. “I have music in my ears 24/7,” she elaborates. “Before I learned social graces as kid, I’d just sing the melodies in my head. I never shut up!”

After watching her older brother play piano, she started taking classical lessons at the age of four. By third grade, she developed an obsession with poetry, carrying around the works of Robert Frost in her pocket. At the same time, she religiously listened to Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson “on a beat up Walkman.” She eventually ended up at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Before dropping out, she linked up with producer Giulio Cercato and wrote and recorded what would become her first single “Break” in 2016. It caught fire around the world, catapulted onto the Spotify Global Viral Chart, and eventually eclipsed 15 million Spotify streams. On its heels, she wrote and featured on “Crawl Outta Love” for Illenium, amassing 58 million Spotify streams, reaching the Top 30 on the Billboard Hot/Dance Electronic Songs Chart, and notching the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) Grand Prize. Between performing in sold out arenas across North America with Illenium throughout 2019, she landed a string of major placements as a writer, including “Like It’s Christmas” for Jonas Brothers, “Phases” for Pretty Much, and “The Truth Untold” for BTS & Steve Aoki” in addition to Illenium’s “Nightlight” and “Sad Songs” with Said The Sky.

Along the way, she signed to Vol. 1 and Epic Records and wholeheartedly pursued her artistry.

“I just decided to start chasing my dreams,” she confesses. “I felt like, ‘Fuck it. If I fail, at least I know I tried’. I had to give it a chance. I felt like I couldn’t possibly hold this in anymore, so I’m letting it out and going all out.”

That’s exactly what she does on her single “Fuck Being Sober.” Over creaky guitar, she admits, “A couple kids from my town already got hitched, I still got daddy issues I ain’t fixed, think I’m gonna drink all my money.” As the production ramps up, it culminates on something of a mission statement as she croons, “I just want to do my own thing.”

In the end, this energy is precisely what makes Annika so special.

“.CoDA.” was originally recorded in 2018, landing as an instant fan-favorite. This brand new, reworked album version sees the song blown up and realized to its full potential.

"More fighting, more screaming matches, another day walking out the door with a sick feeling in your stomach. Fuck them. You don't need them. They need YOU… but still… you love them. Love? More like you're addicted to them and they're addicted to you. Talk shit bitch, say it like you want to leave. You love me like cocaine," the band says cryptically about the song.

The four-piece formed while attending college in Boston and have already amassed a dedicated following with millions of streams.
