We seem to have emojis and icons for everything. If there is any one symbol that represents Christianity, then it has to be the cross. The cross of Jesus is central to everything that we believe. We know that Jesus hung on a cross because of us and for us. Therefore, as Paul said, We Preach Christ Crucified.

An RSVP works both ways. The most expected RSVP tells your host that you are glad to attend their event. But sometimes with the RSVP you have to send your regrets. Maybe you’re genuine in your regrets and maybe it’s just an excuse. Either way you are going to miss out on something someone wants you to be a part of. What if we got genuinely excited about being invited?

There is something special about an invitation. No matter your age or the situation, an invitation means that someone who is hosting a special event, and who obviously wants that event to be a great success, thought of you and wanted to include you. They believe that your presence will make their event better. That’s pretty amazing. And it’s all the more amazing when you realize that God Himself has invited you to His big event.

The enemies of Jesus went to all lengths to try and trap Him, in His words and in His actions. The setting as Luke 14 opens is that kind of trap. But Jesus reveals their hearts and reveals His seriousness to His mission.

 In the old spaghetti westerns, the showdown was called for in the middle of Main Street at high noon. I’m not sure that it was high noon, but on a particular Sabbath, right after church we might say, at lunch, there was a showdown at the ruler of the Pharisees house. What appeared to be an ambush, Jesus answered.

Wonderful things really do happen when the glory of the Lord fills the house of God. It’s not business as usual, that’s for sure. When God’s manifest presence becomes the hallmark characteristic of a church or an individual (who himself IS the temple of the Holy Spirit), God does an amazing work.

Last week we studied King David preparing the blueprints and the financing for the Temple to be built. He set his son up for success since God had called Solomon to be the actual builder of the Temple. As we get into 2 Chronicles, chapter 5, we find that the Temple has been completed and is ready for dedication. But it is the final phrase of this chapter which has become our attention-grabber. That verse says that the glory of the Lord filled the house of God. Our question is, What did that look like and what does that look like today?

When facing our critics we tend to want to get it over with and get back to “normal” as quickly as possible. But there are lessons that we can learn. And Jesus provides a great example of dealing with criticism yet retaining His compassion and mission.

Everyone faces criticism, no matter who you are or what you do. But no one has faced as much and as intense of criticism as did Jesus. And the Bible encourage us to “consider Him,” even when we are forced to face the Stigmatism of Criticism. Let’s handle it like He handled it. We find a great example in Luke 13.
