The advertising slogan, What’s in your wallet?, has been named one of the greatest slogans of all time. Maybe that’s the question to ask as we consider the offerings we give to the Lord. Someone has said that it’s not what’s in the wallet before you give that is as important as what’s left in the wallet after you give. Sacrificial giving will be blessed by the Lord.

 All roads do not lead to heaven, regardless of the familiarity of that old saying. And sadly, some will never see heaven having trusted in the wrong things, despite that they may have been very religious. Church membership won’t save you, baptism won’t save you, serving the church won’t save you. Only those who repent of their sin and place their trust in Christ alone for eternal life will be saved. No wonder the disciples asked, “Lord, Are There Few Who are Saved?”

Salvation is for anybody, for everybody. We like to say, “Anybody, Anywhere; Everybody, Everywhere.” We know that the Bible says that Christ “is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” We know that the Bible says that God is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” And yet Jesus reminds us that narrow is the gate that leads to life and few will find it. Today we examine the question then that comes from His disciples, “Lord, Are There Few Who are Saved?”

We, as believers, need to straighten up, for sure. But shoring up our leanings or attempting to stand a little taller is not the lasting answer. The answer is in the foundation, and until we have that rightly fixed on Christ, we will lean out of plumb considerably.

Tucked inside the Book of Amos is a vision that God gives him of a carpenter’s plumb line, a simple but accurate tool. The plumb line is suspended so that the carpenter can ensure that his building stands straight. God’s plumb line was evidence to Amos that the nation of Israel was off-center. Were God to apply that same tool to America, He would find eerily similar results.

Since the Kingdom of God seems so hard for some to grasp, Jesus made it easier to understand by giving us a picture of what it is like. But He didn’t just leave it there. He went further by describing what is indescribable, by helping us visualize the invisible, by helping us conceive the inconceivable, when He rules and reigns.

 The Kingdom of God is not geographical kingdom or a political kingdom or a social kingdom or even an abstract idea of “kingdom.” It is simply the rule and reign of God. That may seem like a small thing to some, especially since they cannot see it with their eyes. But Jesus makes it crystal clear that God’s Kingdom is both real and bigger than you can imagine. Let’s explore what Jesus said The Kingdom of God is like.

The Great Commission is the church’s mandate, our marching orders. Each one of the Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John – concludes with a version of the Great Commission. And Acts, which picks up the activity of the church following Jesus’ ascension, includes the Great Commission in its opening chapter. Why is each one different? Probably because Jesus said it again and again and again, each time in a little different way. That tells me that this is important to Him and that it should be of primary importance to us.

Sadly, plenty of people have said that the meanest people they’ve met have been at church. I don’t want to be a part of that church. But I do know that that happens sometimes. If you want wonderful things to happen at your church, then welcome Jesus and let Him do what He wants to do and what only He can do.

The key to understanding the Book of Acts lies in a very familiar verse: Acts 1:8. Acts 1:8 can serve as an outline for the entire Book as we read about the disciples taking the gospel to Jerusalem, to all Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. A key to understanding my purpose in life is found in that same verse. Who is to take the gospel into those areas today? I am; you are. His last command should be our first concern.
