Each year we host a service we call Honor & Remembrance. It is designed for families who have lost someone dear to them this past year, and they will be spending their first Thanksgiving and Christmas without them. Grief is hard. And the holidays seem to highlight our hurt. If you are stumbling through grief and you don’t know where to turn or if there is any hope on the other side, we want you to know that there is hope, and it is found in the Person of Jesus Christ. May this message bless you and minister to you during this holiday season.

Facing all that comes our way, we need the deliverance, the protection, of God. He sees threats you don’t see. And He sees escape routes you’ve not yet discovered. And so Luke concludes the Model Prayer by teaching us the Protection of Prayer.

As Luke quotes Jesus in His Model Prayer, he concludes the prayer with the statement, “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” This may be the easiest part of this prayer for us to offer and for God to answer because there is not even the tiniest chance that God will lead us into temptation. We get there, but not by Him. Rather He protects us.

 As one of the signs of the times, Jesus said that the love of many will grow cold and that we will see an increase in lawlessness. Is there anything else in the news? We are living through these signs, these birth pangs that promise the coming of the Lord. We want you to be aware and be prepared.

Jesus is coming again. He said He will. The Scriptures say He will. And as the whole earth groans for His Second Coming, there are signs seen in the everyday world that say He will. Those signs are provided for us to encourage us and to urge us as we prepare for His coming. We see the signs, but do we really understand the signs?

The cross divides time and it divides humanity. That division has been pictured as sheep and goats. But it is a harder concept to swallow when we begin talking about how the cross divides some families: fathers from sons, mothers from daughters. In that way, even the Prince of Peace can be considered The Great Divider.

Is there a more beautiful theme than that of forgiveness? To be forgiven is an act of mercy and grace; it is unearned and undeserved. In His Model Prayer, Jesus prayed, “And forgive us our sins.” We need to pray prayers of confession, knowing that He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. This is the Pardon of Prayer.

On the surface, today’s passage seems very difficult because we associate Jesus with love and peace and reconciliation and unity and the like. Yet we get to hear Jesus say, “Nope, I came to bring division.” We need more than a casual glance at this passage, so let’s get in to it.
