Although we do not want to treat God as a cosmic Santa Claus hopping up on His lap just to deliver our wish list, it is ok to ask for things in prayer. In fact, Jesus invites us to do just that. He said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” So today we focus on the portion of the Model Prayer that reads, “Give us day by day our daily bread.”

Jesus tells the parable of a man we call the Rich Fool. He knew that he was rich, and was making plans to become richer still (at the expense of everyone else around him). He knows he’s rich. But it is God who deems him a fool because he valued temporal stuff over his eternal soul.

In 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower signed into law the establishment of our National Motto: In God We Trust. Two years prior, on Flag Day 1954, he signed into law the insertion of the phrase “Under God” into the Pledge of Allegiance, One Nation Under God. Sadly it seems that it is In Gold We Trust and that we have become One Nation Under Greed.

Ultimately, this part of the Model Prayer – the part that says, “Your Kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” – won’t be fulfilled until the Millennium and then in the Eternal State. Still, we are to pray for God’s rule and resolve to be accomplished in our own lives.

Jesus’ prayer in the Garden was so powerful: not My will but Your will be done. To be so surrendered to the will of the Father that He would set aside His own will, His own agenda, His own preference (even knowing that as God the Son, His will, agenda, and preference was perfect) is mind-boggling. Yet that is what He calls us to in the Model Prayer: Your Kingdom come, Your will be done.

Hypocrisy is just pretending. When children pretend, it’s fun and cute. When adults pretend, it’s not quite so cute. And when believers pretend, it’s not cute at all. And Jesus has specific things to say to the believer tempted to pretend, warning them that You Might Be A Hypocrite..

To mention the name Jeff Foxworthy makes many people automatically think of his You Might Be A Redneck jokes. The deeper he digs, however, some of those jokes aren’t funny…because they reflect my life a little too much. This opening passage in Luke 12 could be a take-off on a series of You Might Be A Hypocrite lines, but they’re not funny, and it’s because of the same reason: they reflect my life a little too much.

When my focus is squarely on the Person of God, I begin to think about Who He is and all that He is. I think about the many names, titles, and descriptions that are found of Him in the Bible. And I cannot help but spend a season of prayer in praise and worship of Him.

We often – and rightly – begin our times of prayer with praise and adoration and worship of the One True Living God. As we continue our phrase-by-phrase study of the Model Prayer in Luke 11, we come to the phrase, “Hallowed be Your name.” And so we focus on The Praise of Prayer.

God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Three times God’s Word tells us that. So when I approach God in prayer, I must lay aside my pride, my arrogance, and come before Him in humility. Let’s complete this scene of events in Luke 11.
