We can all think of people who have made a significant impact upon our lives, people who have made a real difference. At the close of Paul’s second letter to Timothy and at the close of his life, Paul recalls, likely with much love and gratitude, the people who have made a difference in his life and ministry as they have partnered with him along the way.

We often pray for the manifest presence of God. We often pray for the glory of God to be revealed. We often pray for the power of God to be on display. And when He shows up, we often shut down. Sometimes we don’t know how to act when the only explanation is the activity of God. May we not be like any of the people that we read about in this section of Luke 11.

Are demons real? We believe that they are. Is Satan real? We believe that he is. Why would we believe such in this modern, progressive world? Because the Bible clearly teaches their existence and even highlights some of their activity. That is just what we find in our passage today in Luke 11. Jesus casts out a demon, and the people around Him try to explain it by any means other than Jesus…much like we do today.

They say that some people come into your life for a season, and some people come into your life for a reason. As you look back you begin to see the roles that different people have played in your life. And you realize at the center of it all is the most important One of all: the Lord Jesus.

We are reminded that Paul is at the end of his life as he writes these closing verses in the final chapter of the last book he will write. That stage of life has a way of redefining priorities. You soon realize that what matters greatly are the relationships you have formed over the years. Paul takes a quick look back at some of the people he has encountered.

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, they may have had in mind that He would give them a script to follow. But what He gave them was a model. Sometimes we call this the Lord’s Prayer, but maybe it’s more appropriate to call it the Model Prayer. He gave them elements that would grow their prayer life that they might be mighty men of prayer.

Can you imagine being one of Jesus’ disciples and being within earshot of Jesus praying? To hear Him talk to the Father with such intimacy. To hear the heavy burden He carried for the hurting, …for the world,…for them. Maybe even to hear your own name called out in prayer. No wonder the disciples said, “Lord, teach us to pray.”

God promises reward for His faithful servants. And these rewards will not perish. The Bible calls them crowns, and it mentions five by name. Living in Light of the End means, in part, looking forward to the reward God has promised His children.

End-of-life is not a time we like to talk about. We know it’s coming for all of us, but still we’d rather put those conversations off as long as possible. But what if you had someone to guide you in that conversation? Would that make it a little easier? In our text today, Paul shows us what’s it is like to have that difficult conversation, what it’s like Living in Light of the End. Make your life Good to the Last Drop.

What is one thing you want to see God do? What is one thing God wants you to do? What is one thing that is hampering you? What is one thing you know you need to do today? In our passage, Jesus says, “One thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part.” Choose the good, the one necessary thing.
