How we approach God in prayer matters. This passage has implications for our prayer life as we see how a certain Pharisee and a lawyer approach Jesus arrogantly. Let’s walk through this scene together.

It is certainly good practice to begin your prayer time with praise. It means that you begin, not with your problem which may have driven you to pray, but you begin with His Person. What is one thing about the Person of God - maybe His attributes, maybe His activity - that causes you to want to praise Him in prayer?

To call these mini-parables is not to diminish their weight. Like a boxer throwing a series of jabs, Jesus doesn’t tell elaborate intricate stories. Rather He swiftly punches home the truth of Seeing Life Through the Eyes of Faith.

Today we come to a section of Luke 11 where Jesus tells three independent parables that are all tied together under the theme of LIGHT. Because these parables are so brief, some refer to them as mini-parables, short, stated truths that send the message home. Let’s examine these three mini-parables.

We like to say that we are like Gideon when we ask God for a sign, when we “lay out the fleece.” But Gideon was seeking the voice of God. We already have the voice of God in the God-breathed Scriptures. If we would simply follow Him in obedience to what we already know, He promises to guide us right to where He wants us.

Is it ok to ask God for a sign? What are you looking for in a sign? Proof? Guidance? Direction? God calls us to a life of faith, of belief, of trust. For us, oftentimes, signs are merely shortcuts. We don’t want to pay the price of faith. Yet, God calls us to live by faith and not by sight.

They say that some people come into your life for a season, and some people come into your life for a reason. As you look back you begin to see the roles that different people have played in your life. And you realize at the center of it all is the most important One of all: the Lord Jesus.
