The Discipleship Decision was first introduced earlier in this chapter when Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let Him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” After a series of failures on the part of the disciples, Jesus returns to this question about what it means to follow Jesus. This is “The Discipleship Decision, Revisited.”

The world thinks it has the corner of the market on greatness. The problem, however, is that the world has such a limited view of greatness. John Piper said, “If you can't see the sun you will be impressed with a street light. If you've never felt thunder and lightning you'll be impressed with fireworks. And if you turn your back on the greatness and majesty of God you'll fall in love with a world of shadows and short-lived pleasures.” Let’s discover God’s idea of True Greatness.

Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Babe Ruth, Tiger Woods, Wayne Gretzky, Roger Federer, Pele. What do these men have in common? They are arguably the GOATs in their particular sports, the Greatest Of All Time. It’s what Muhammed Ali claimed for himself. He said, “I am the greatest. I said that even before I knew it.” Sounds like Jesus’ disciples in Luke 9, arguing over which of them was the greatest.

The greatest treasure you have is a copy of God’s Word in a language that you can read and understand and study. As the Last Days become more and more perilous, you will need the help found in the Bible, and you will need the tools that God gives you to face those days and its struggles.
