Paul tells Timothy that the Last Days are going to be filled with perilous times, and it will show in the character of men, even men in the church. In our passage today, Paul turns his attention to Timothy that he might maintain upright character as those days approach. And God has given to Timothy a number of tools to help him. Those same tools He provides for you.

The saddest part of coming down off a mountain-top experience is discovering that you try to serve God without faith, without power, even without Christ. But Jesus makes all the difference. Everything changes when Jesus shows up. He can turn trouble and tragedy into triumph.

We’ve all had those mountain-top experiences – and boy are they wonderful! But we have also faced the times of coming back to reality, coming back to the real world (so to speak). More often than not, a mountain-top experience is followed by some form of trouble. Can you learn what you need to on the top in order to win the battle in the valley?

Some people miss out on what God really wants to do in their life, in their family, in their church, and in their community because they are simply too busy or maybe too tired to be present. Peter, James, and John almost missed one of the most glorious events in Jesus’ earthly ministry. Thankfully, they came “fully awake” the Bible says, and were able to be “eyewitnesses of His majesty.”

At Britt David, for the last two-plus years we have been gathering for prayer every day asking God for revival and spiritual awakening. We have been asking for His manifest presence that His glory might be clearly seen. Peter, James, and John got to see just that. As Peter would later write, “We were eyewitnesses of His majesty.”

The best decision that you could ever make is to receive Jesus into your life as personal Lord and Savior. It’s the best decision; it’s the smartest decision. And it will pay off now and for eternity. But Jesus said to count the cost before you just jump in looking to go to heaven when you die. You don’t have to follow Jesus, but you can. Anyone can have Jesus as personal Lord and Savior. What you should know up front is that that decision to follow Jesus comes at a price. That’s the very thing that Jesus shares with His disciples in our passage today.

Cults prey upon Christians who are not well-grounded in the faith. This can be seen throughout the church’s history. But as the Last Days approach, the Bible warns us that this exodus from orthodox, evangelical Christianity toward cultic, anti-Scriptural practices will continue, and will grow. There is however, a simple solution, and Paul shares that with anyone tempted to just go through the motions.

Going through the motions is a temptation in every generation and in every disciple, including work, home-life, and our Christian walk. It is easy to fall lazily into form over function, to be preoccupied with perceptions than with the power of God. Paul tells Timothy – and us – just how to deal with such a temptation.

The crowds think of Jesus in very diminished terms. People today think of Jesus as far less than He is in reality. But If we don’t think correctly about Who Jesus is, how can we possibly understand the magnitude of what He has done? So His question for His disciples is His question for us: Who do YOU say that I am?
