Team is one of the first and most important things to get right in a church plant. In this session we look at how a team emerges through the stages of a plant, what the different types of people bring (foundations, bricks and scaffold), and how Paul's approach in Philippi and Corinth gives us a model to follow. We also work honestly through four tensions every planting team faces - from sharing vision to giving away responsibility to navigating the moment when friends become leadership decisions.

The temptation in church planting is to treat prayer as something you do alongside the real work. This session argues for something different - that prayer is the mechanism by which your plant stays tethered to God's mission rather than becoming your own project. Calling tells you that God wants you to plant a church. Vision tells you what that church is meant to be. In this session we look at what vision actually is, how it differs from burden and strategy, and how you go about forming it: through the Great Commission, prophetic words, understanding your context, prayer, and time. We also look at how you communicate vision well, why it leaks, and what it feels like to carry something others can't yet see.

Church planting starts with a question that can be hard to answer: is this actually what God wants me to do? In this session we work through how calling operates, from the general call of the Great Commission through to the personal and specific sense that God is speaking to you about this. We look at what that subjective sense feels like, how it gets confirmed through others, and what you do with it once you have it, including what calling means when things get hard, and what it means when the plant doesn't go the way you hoped.

After Pentecost the Jerusalem church was extraordinary, vibrant, growing and Spirit-filled. And for several chapters, they mostly stayed put. This session traces what it took to get the gospel moving: persecution that scattered ordinary believers who preached wherever they went, Paul with his driven vision for the unreached place, and Antioch, the church that became the model for every church planting movement since. Along the way we discover that what the apostles did wasn't innovative. It was exactly what they'd already seen Jesus do.

In Mark 1, Jesus built something remarkable in Capernaum — the kind of church we'd all want to be part of. And then he left it. This session looks at what Jesus did next and why, tracing his pioneering pattern from Capernaum to the nearby villages, through the sending of the Twelve and the Seventy-Two, to the Great Commission. What we find is that the impulse to go to the next place wasn't a strategy Jesus adopted. It was at the heart of who he was and why he came.

Why build church at all — why not just evangelise individuals? There are practical answers to that question, but in this session we go deeper and ask what the New Testament itself says. Working through seven images the NT uses for the church (the Trinity, the Bride, the One New Humanity, the Temple, the Body, the Flock, and the Royal Priesthood) we discover that the corporate people of God isn't just a useful tool for mission. It's the point.
