Just a few weeks ago, “Liberation” won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play’s director, Whitney White, has reached a level all her own, as well. Previously, she was nominated for her Broadway directorial debut, “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.” Now, the director has earned her second Tony nomination for helming “Liberation,” which won the Drama League Award for Outstanding Play and is nominated for Best Play.
If White wins, she would be the first Black woman director to take home a Tony Award. In the episode below, White reflects on casting “Liberation,” making the meta structure of the play work onstage and loving Tony Awards host, P!NK.
