Wow - wow wow wow. "FairyTale: A True Story" surprised us in all the ways we could have been surprised. While this film did slightly stretch the bounds of Season 1's theme (90's Sci-Fi and Fantasy Films if you're interested), we could not have been more delighted with the magical world that we discovered. This film is a dramatization of the Cottingley Fairies "hoax" that took place in Yorkshire England towards the close of World War I. The film explores the nature of belief and, very importantly, the magical ways that children interact with worlds beyond this one. We loved this film. There's no two ways about it, this is film is a goddamn British delight that will knock your flippin' socks off. We thought we were throwing this one in as a bit of a throw away episode but we could not have been more wrong. Both of us absolutely fell in love with cousins Francis and Elsie as they navigated their childhood wonder, their love of fairies, and (above all) their BELIEF. We reconnected with our sense of wonder and our deep connections to how truly transformative childhood belief can be. We cannot recommend this film enough - give it a watch this holiday season with your family! Bonus points for a star-studded cast (Peter O'Toole, Hervey Keitel, Bill Nighy), one of the most incredible art departments in the business (Michael Howells, Sam Riley, Tim Webber), and a truly considerate director (Charles Sturridge). Negative points for the horrendous press interviews by the monster under all our beds, John C. Tibbets. We hate you Tibbets. But we love this film. Give it a watch.
