  • You Can't Good Your Way Into Heaven (Good Man vs Godly Man)

Brotherhood Forged is a Christian men's podcast helping men grow in faith, discipline, and leadership.

Can you be a good man without being a godly man? Joey Koontz and Paul Bengel kick off a new short discussion format with a question a lot of men wrestle with. Plenty of men are faithful husbands, solid fathers, and hard workers without following Jesus. So what is a godly man, and is being good enough?

Short answer: you can't good your way into heaven. The goal was never to become a good man. The goal is to become more like Christ, and goodness is the fruit of that relationship.

    In this episode:

    • How to be a good man by the world's standard vs. God's standard
    • Where men who don't follow Christ get their idea of "good"
    • Why Jesus said no one is good except God alone
    • Three men, one generous act: does your motive matter to God?
    • Why good works don't produce salvation
    • The question every man of God should ask himself

    Chapters:
0:00 Can you be a good man without God?
    1:01 Defining "good"
2:19 Where do our standards come from?
2:56 No one is good except God alone
4:21 Does your motive matter to God?
7:01 Stop chasing good. Chase Christ.
    8:49 Closing thoughts

    Scripture: Mark 10:18, Genesis 1:27, Romans 3:10

Question for you: Are you trying to be a good man who believes in God, or a man whose entire life is being shaped by God? Tell us in the comments. Got a challenge for us? Bring it. Email [email protected]

  • "I'll Talk to Him Later": Mick Naples on Losing His Dad and the Pain of Regret

Brotherhood Forged is a Christian men's podcast helping men grow in faith, discipline, and leadership.

Episode [EP#]: Joey and Paul sit down with Mick Naples. He's an author, a podcaster, a fellow Ohioan, and the son of a stubborn old Italian guy who "fixed lawnmowers for a living." Mick wrote Walking with Grizzlies after losing his dad and facing a regret he'll carry for life. On the day his father died, a nurse asked if he wanted to talk to him. Mick said, "No, I'll talk to him later." There was no later.

This conversation is about honoring your parents while you still can. It's about seeing your father as a real man with real battles, and becoming the dad your kids know will always show up.

Huge thank you to Mick Naples for his honesty and his time. Grab the book, get the free Resolution, and share your own Grizzly Letter:

  • When the People You Love Stop Appreciating You ... Do This.

When the people you love most make you feel unappreciated, that hurt can quickly turn into anger, resentment, and distance.

In this episode, we talk about what to do when you don’t feel valued at home, how to have the hard conversations instead of silently checking out, and why your pain doesn’t have to determine the person you become.

We’ll also look at what Scripture says about continuing to do good, speaking the truth in love, and finding your worth in something deeper than the approval of others.

You can’t control how someone else responds to you. But you can control how you respond, the conversations you’re willing to have, and the kind of person you become in the middle of a hard season.

Don’t let feeling unappreciated turn you into someone you don’t want to become.

  • The Lone Wolf Trap: Who Would Actually Pick Up the Phone at 3AM?

Brotherhood Forged is a Christian men's podcast helping men grow in faith, discipline, and leadership.

The lone wolf mentality feels strong. Handle it yourself, carry your own weight, don't ask for help. Joey and Paul break down why that mindset is actually the loneliest place a man can live, even when he's surrounded by a wife, kids, coworkers, and a church group. They dig into the pride and shame behind isolation, the mask so many men wear, and the one question that exposes whether you're really known: who do you call when everything falls apart?

Topics covered: Why the lone wolf isn't the strong wolf, he's the one who goes off alone and dies Pride and shame as the top two reasons men isolate The difference between responsibility and carrying everything alone The mask men wear to hide who they really are The 3AM test: who actually picks up the phone Why vulnerability is what frees you, not what exposes you A baptism testimony and the ripple effect of one man being honest about his story A caution about suicide prevention and reaching out to the men around you Why iron only sharpens iron when there's friction Why your wife can't be your entire support system

    Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:9 through 10, Proverbs 27:17, Galatians 6:2

Timestamps: 0:00 The cost of being a lone wolf 1:03 Why independence appeals to men 3:14 Responsibility versus isolation 4:00 Have you ever refused help 7:45 Why guys really isolate: pride, shame, busyness, past hurt, fear 9:31 The mask we wear 11:39 The 3AM test 13:10 What a real conversation actually sounds like 14:55 You need someone who will call you out 16:19 Vulnerability, a baptism, and a ripple effect 21:59 Suicide prevention and reaching out 22:59 Ecclesiastes 4:9 through 10 and Proverbs 27:17 26:01 Getting called back to your Bible 28:56 Why you check what you're taught against scripture yourself 30:25 Your wife is not your entire support system 31:22 What going first actually looks like 33:07 Closing prayer

  • Still Fighting Spiritual Battles With Willpower? Do This Instead.

Most men know how to try harder.

More discipline. More control. Better habits. Stronger boundaries.

And in a lot of areas of life, that works.

But what happens when you keep losing the same spiritual battle?

In this episode, we talk about the danger of relying on willpower alone and why discipline without dependence can turn into self-reliance. We break down what it actually looks like to depend on God when temptation hits, anger rises, discouragement sets in, or your mind starts going somewhere it shouldn’t.

Ephesians 6:10 says, “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.”

The question isn’t just, “How strong am I?”

It’s, “Where is my strength coming from?”

If you’ve been fighting the same battle over and over and wondering why trying harder still isn’t working, this episode is for you.

  • You Know What to Do? So Why Aren't You Doing It?

What if the thing you keep using to grow is actually helping you avoid changing?

You probably don’t need another podcast.

You probably don’t need another book, another video, another plan, or another piece of advice either.

Most of us already know what we should be doing. We know we should put the phone down. Be more present with our kids. Pursue our spouse. Take care of our health. Spend time with God. Follow through on the things we keep saying matter.

So why aren’t we doing it?

In this episode, I’m talking about the gap between knowing and doing, and how self-improvement can sometimes give us the feeling of progress without actually requiring us to change.

Because consuming good information isn’t the same thing as becoming a different person.

At some point, you have to stop standing on the sidelines collecting advice and get in the arena.

That idea is inspired in part by Theodore Roosevelt’s famous “Man in the Arena” passage from his 1910 speech Citizenship in a Republic.

This episode is about doing less consuming, taking more action, and becoming the person you already know you’re supposed to be.

  • Maybe Balance Is The Problem

What if the reason you can’t find balance isn’t because you’re doing something wrong, but because perfect balance was never possible in the first place?

Marriage. Kids. Faith. Work. Health. Goals. Friendships. The things you’re building. They all need something from you, but you only have so much time, energy, attention, and emotional capacity to give.

And when one area needs more, something else inevitably gets less.

In this episode, Paul and Amber have an honest conversation about what that looks like in their own family right now. With both of them working full time, three kids, sports nearly every night, a baby, career changes, and Brotherhood Forged continuing to grow, they’re trying to answer the same question so many families are asking:

How do you give the people and priorities you love what they need without feeling like you’re failing everywhere else?

They unpack the idea of Family Dials, a different way to think about balance. Instead of trying to keep every area of life equally prioritized, what if the goal is to recognize what season your family is in, intentionally turn certain dials up, allow others to come down, and keep communicating about when they need to change again?

Paul and Amber talk candidly about the dial that has been turned down in their own life, their time together. They discuss the sacrifices that come with supporting each other’s goals, why “quality time” may be hiding inside ordinary moments, and how stepping into your kids’ world can create connection even during the busiest seasons.

They also discuss something they’re still learning themselves. Sometimes feeling overwhelmed doesn’t mean you need to try harder. You may need to decide, together, what actually deserves more of you right now.

Because maybe balance isn’t keeping every dial at five.

Maybe it’s knowing which ones need to be turned up, which ones can come down, and making sure you don’t forget to turn them back up when the season changes.

If your family has ever felt like you’re rushing from work to practice to dinner to bedtime while wondering when you’re actually supposed to enjoy each other, this conversation is for you.

  • Nobody Taught You to Be a Man: Why You're Still Living in Hard Times

Brotherhood Forged is a Christian men's podcast helping men grow in faith, discipline, and leadership.

Weak men create hard times. Everybody quotes it. Almost nobody asks why it's true. Joey Koontz breaks down why the real problem was never laziness, it was that nobody ever sat men down and taught them what it means to be a biblical man. He gets honest about decades of thinking strength meant carrying everything alone as the alpha, and how learning to love his wife the way Jesus loved people finally broke that open. Then he takes you to Joshua 1:9 and makes the case that strength never comes first. Obedience does.

    Topics covered:
Why weak men create hard times for everyone standing next to them
Nobody ever taught us what it means to be a biblical man
Decades of thinking strength meant carrying it all alone
Learning to love his wife the way Jesus loved people

The trap of living like a boy in a man's body with a bigger paycheck
What avoiding hard conversations costs your wife, kids, and brothers
Joshua 1:9 and why God commanded strength before Joshua felt ready
Why you obey your way into manhood, you don't feel your way into it
