  • Y: The Last Man

This week we had a bunch to talk about including a couple of new projects by some cool creators. Scott Snyder has a Substack where he's teaching a comics class. You can still sign up for it if you're interested by subscribing (https://bestjackettpress.substack.com/). Also, Jeff Lemire has begun a Substack where he is going to display art, launch new comics, have sales for subscribers and generally just do nifty comics related stuff (https://jefflemire.substack.com/). It's great to see some creators trying to take their work directly to market without going through the publisher middleman and it will be interesting to see where that goes.

Then we talk trailers! New Spider-Man: No Way Home came out fairly recently. And then we get to the main event...

We go through a bit of the Y: The Last Man FX trailer (streaming on Hulu September 13) before getting into our discussion of the first trade in our ramp up to the show.

And that's it for this episode, c'mon back next week where we'll be talking about the all time great anime, Akira.

  • The Low, Low Woods

Welcome back to the new, new format where today we're talking about the supernatural/psychological horror book The Low, Low Woods. From writer Carmen Maria Machado, illustrator Dani, colorist Tamra Bonvillan, and letterer Steve Wands, two teenage girls set out to solve the mysteries of their town, Shudder-to-Think. Along the way they run into their fair share of the supernatural, but the scariest things in town are the people. Published by Hill House Comics, it's a bleak look at the damage from the secrets that are kept, and the ones that get out.

  • The Lemireisode

Today we're talking all about one of the biggest creators in comics today, that's right, it's a deep dive into Jeff Lemire's works.

    • The Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino project I reported as “Classified” is actually  called Primordial and is slated to start dropping in September.
    • Dustin Nguyen just posted on Instagram that  he and Lemire are working on a new creator owned project that will hit shelves next year oooeee.
    • Lemire recently announced his own written/illustrated book, Mazebook coming out in September.

And then we talk about all the Lemire books:

    Essex County
    Royal City
    Black Hammer
    The Underwater Welder
    Sweet Tooth
    Trillium
    Gideon Falls
    Lost Dogs

  • Gus and the Big Smiling Man

    In this episode:
Sweet Tooth (comic and Netflix show)
    Gideon Falls

It's a Jeff Lemire warm up to our first creator deep dive episode, we're talking about a couple of books today before we go into the whole Lemiralog (that's uh...the Lemire catalog) next ep.

First, we're roaming the hybrid-pocalypse with a comparison of the new Netflix show Sweet Tooth to it's dear deer predecessor Sweet Tooth, the comic.

Then we're falling down the reality hole into a discussion of the final volume of Gideon Falls.

And of course, what episode would be complete without our what's on the stack discussion. This week's is a doozy:
    Frogcatchers (Steve)
    The Underwater Welder (Steve)
    Little Bird (Steve)
When I Arrived at the Castle -- Emily Carroll (Steve)
The Expanse: Nemesis Games [book 5] (Steve)
    Dune (Steve)
    Lost Dogs (Joe)

    Severed (Joe)
Howard the Duck -- Chip Zdarsky (Joe)
    Naomi (Joe)
    Crossover (Joe)
    Usagi Yojimbo (Joe)

  • Trickster Gods and Blues in Green

Hey there Bubble Buddies (TM), we're back with your newest dose of comics blabbery! On today's show we've got our thoughts on Ram V and Anand RK's book Blue in Green and we talk about Disney+'s latest MCU offering, Loki.

    Show notes coming atcha!

    In the News:

    • On June 10 the nominations for the 2021 Eisner Awards were announced (and they’ve added a new category this year, Best Graphic Memoir). Winners will be declared during the San Diego Comic-Con that will be going virtually again this year between July 23-25.
    • The Gideon Falls team Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino just announced a new book, seemingly called “Classified” or maybe they’re saying the title cannot be divulged? I don’t know, but the cover they shared has me excited for some new indie comix goodness. First issue should be dropping this September. Update since recording!!! The book is actually going to be called Primordial and will be a six-issue miniseries.
    • The rounding out of the Sandman cast for the Netflix series has got me very excited. I’ve been waiting 20+ years for this, let’s gooooo. Last I saw release date likely 2022.

Once we get through the news, we'll be talking atcha about Blue in Green (wr. Ram V, ill. Anand RK, col. John Pearson, let. Aditya Bidikar), the dark, devil at the crossroads story about passion, self-discovery, and self-destruction.

Then we're catching up with that mischievous trickster god Loki over on Disney+. We run down the first two episodes and what we thought about them.

And finally we tell you what we've been reading these days and set you up for the next Lemire-athon episode.

And that's the ballgame. Catch ya next time!

  • Postal Organism Ricksigned Only for Mortying

Wubba lubba dub dubz, ya'll. We're back again for another positively mental episode. Let's get down to these liner notes, here's what's comin' atcha.

    In the news:

    • Comics artist John Paul Leon passed on May 1, 2021 at the age of 49 from cancer. Some of his works include: Static Shock, Earth X, Batman: Creature of the Night, The Winter Men, Sgt. Fury, and many more.  RIP.
    • They’ve cast the four paper girls for the Amazon adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s excellent sci-fi coming of age tale, Paper Girls. Sofia Rosinsky, Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, and Fina Strazza will play the main young ladies, I can’t say I’ve heard of any of them, but I’m hoping for big things to come. Ali Wong has also been cast, and everything’s starting to shape up. Now this is an Amazon show I’m excited for.
    • One Night in Miami director and Watchmen alum Regina King to direct a Bitter Root adaptation. The comic is a mix of steampunk/zombie/old magic/Harlem Renaissance that you should definitely be reading.

After all that we're shipping you our review of the Top Cow noir-ish town with a secret book, Postal (wr. Matt Hawkins and Bryan Edward Hill; ill. Isaac Goodheart; col. Betsy Gonia; let. Troy Peteri).

Then we shine a spotlight on a show Joe has been meaning to watch for a while, season 1 of Rick and Morty. We also briefly talk Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum's new Hulu series, M.O.D.O.K.

And last, but never least, we tell you what's on our stacks!
Gideon Falls vol. 6 (Steve AND Joe)
    M.O.D.O.K. Head Games (Steve)
    TMNT: The Last Ronin (Steve)
To Drown in Dark Water (Steve)
    Colonel Weird: Cosmagog (Joe)
    The Sixth Gun (Joe)
    The Eternals (Joe)
    Slaughterhouse Five (Joe)
The Premonition: A Pandemic Story (Joe)

Oh yeah, one more thing, next month our swap is going to include Ram V's Blue in Green and we're going to spend an episode fanboying out over our favorite Jeff Lemire works.

    That's it. Seeya then!

  • Sowing the Seeds of Invincibility

We can't believe we're 5 episodes in already. Here's what you're getting this week!

As always, we kick off with some news:

    • Chloe Zhao getting high praise from Angelina Jolie in reference to the Eternals. Angelina called her a very special director. Small little stories like this are continuing to add to this being the Marvel property I’m most excited to see.
    • John Ridley, 12 Years a Slave writer, is taking over the Black Panther comics. Ta-Nehisi Coates had been the writer on this series for the past 5 years on a critically acclaimed run.
    • An interesting piece of miscellany. A planned Hulk arc originally begun in 1984 is just seeing print now. It looks like this has changed a lot in 35 years, but the book, Monsters written by Barry Windsor-Smith and published by Fantagraphics will be released on 5/5/2021. The copy reads: “Created over a period of 35 years, Barry Windsor-Smith' Monsters is a tour de force of visual storytelling. Part family drama, part espionage thriller, part metaphysical journey, it is an intimate portrait of individuals struggling to reclaim their lives and an epic political odyssey across two generations of American history.” I must say it looks beautiful, but it’ll cost you a pretty penny at $79.99.

After that we get down to this week's comic swap and Steve had Joe read a grimy, pre-post-apocalyptic take (wr. Ann Nocenti, ill. David Aja) from Dark Horse/Berger Books release The Seeds.

Then we move on to the spotlight shows du jour, it's our season wrap ups of Invincible and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

We run down the (mostly) upcoming comics adaptations:
    M.O.D.O.K. - May 21
    Sweet Tooth - June 4
    Loki - June 9

And of course talk about what's on the stack this month:
The Department of Truth vol. 1 (Steve)
Infinity Train ( Steve ) -PLEASE WATCH THIS SHOW!
    Immortal Hulk vol. 1 (Joe)
    Scumbag vol. 1 (Joe)
Big Trouble in Little China comic adaptation (Joe)
    Mare of Easttown ( Joe)

And we really hope you're coming back in two weeks for our rundown of Postal and our review of Rick and Morty (plus bonus M.O.D.O.K. chatter)
