Bubbling Up episodes

  • MGMT for the Invincible Mind

Welcome back! Let's get to it, episode 4 kicks off, as usual with a little news/things we think are interesting:

    • If you haven't yet, check out Panel Syndicate, your source for digital comics from some awesome creators (started up by Brian K. Vaughan himself)
    • We just got wind of a really cool new service called Comic Distro that is creating a print on demand platform for comic publishers. Looks like it could be really useful for tiny market pubs and the like.

Then we get down to business with Joe's pick for this month, Mind MGMT (wr. & ill. Matt Kindt), a high pressure spy/conspiracy story filled with intrigue and agents with bizarre mental powers.

After that we jump into our review of the first 4 episodes of Invincible, Amazon Prime's newest take on those naughty superheros.

Want to know what's on our stacks this month? We've got recommendations!
      Hench (Joe)
      American Vampire (Joe)
      Ted Lasso (Joe) - AppleTV
      The Serpent (Joe) - Netflix
      Snow Angels (Joe)
      Nobody (Joe)
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (Steve)
The Last Book You'll Ever Read -- upcoming (Steve)
Tales From Harrow County -- upcoming (Steve)

And if you want to keep up with us for next month, we'll be swapping the following:
      The Seeds (Steve's pick)
      Postal vol. 1 (Joe's pick)

  • Falcon and the Winter Sheriff of Babylon

Welcome back! It's episode 3 and we've got all the hip content!

We start off with some news:

    • A few months old at this point, but Bob Wiacek, famed comics illustrator, was recently diagnosed with glaucoma and, as happens way too often in the comics industry, was having issues with the money to cover his expenses. He’s got a GoFundMe if you’re feeling generous and as an added bonus, Brian K. Vaughan purchased an unpublished Alan Moore GEN13 script and (it seems, with Alan’s permission) in January, Vaughan offered to send a digital version of that script along to anyone who donates any amount to Wiacek’s GoFundMe. If the GoFundMe is still running, this is just a good thing to do for someone who’s dealing with some bs and you can get your eyeballs on a piece of weird comix history, so you got that going for you.
    • In the same post, BKV also noted, we’d be getting some new Saga soon. Hooray!
    • Announced at the end of March: BRZRKR gets a movie and anime deal. The Keanusance continues.

Then we chat about Steve's pick for the comic swap this month, The Sheriff of Babylon (wr. Tom King, ill. Mitch Gerads). This is a post-Iraq war murder mystery/international intrigue tale by one of the best working teams we've had the pleasure of reading.

We mention "upcoming" TV and movies, Invincible on Amazon Prime (season 1 already over) and Jupiter's Legacy on Netflix (begins airing May 7).  After that we're gabbing about the first 3 episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Disney+'s sophomore Marvel entry.

Then it's a good old What's On the Stack? recommendations including:
Low vol. 5: Light Brings Light (Steve)
    Branded to Kill (Joe)
    Hench (Joe)
    The Memory Police (Joe)

And don't forget to join us next time for our rundown of Mind MGMT issues 1-12 and our thoughts on Invicible.

  • Falconry in the Heart of Harrow County

It's the second episode of Bubbling Up and we're talking about, well, a bunch of stuff, including Scott Snyder's new imprint, Best Jackett Press.

After that little tidbit, we jumped right into our discussion of Harrow County vol. 1 (wr. Cullen Bunn/ill. Tyler Crook), a down south gothic horror with witches and ghosts aplenty.

We gave our thoughts on the (at the time of recording) upcoming The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The show's almost over now, but here's the final trailer if you hadn't seen it yet.

We wound down the show by giving a little preview of some upcoming movies and a few personal recommendations:
The Eternals coming in November (congratulations Chloe Zhao for the Oscar noms!)
Justice League Snyder cut (recorded just before it came out)
The Expanse (Steve's rec - comic miniseries)
Darwin Cooke's Parker comics (Joe's rec)

    NEXT MONTH'S BOOK SWAP BOOKS:
Sheriff of Babylon (Steve's suggestion for Joe)
Mind MGMT (Joe's suggestion for Steve)

  • Something is Killing... WANDAVISION

In our inaugural episode we talk a bit about IDW (https://www.comicsbeat.com/idw-hires-three-execs-including-editor-mark-doyle/ and   https://www.comicsbeat.com/preview-locke-key-the-sandman-universe-crossover-hell-gone/) -- side note: the new Sandman/Locke and Key crossover came out this month, so check your local comic shop for issue #1! We also mentioned a tiny press publisher, Source Point, making moves (https://www.comicsbeat.com/small-press-spotlight-source-point-press-simon-schuster/).

Then we get into our first ever comic book swap. The guys discuss Steve's first pick, volume 1 of Something is Killing the Children (James Tynion IV and  Werther Dell'Edera), a horror/action book with buckets of blood and mayhem.

When we recorded we were right in the middle of WandaVision mania, so of course we had to talk about that.

And we ended off with some recommendations:
    Bitter Root (Steve)
    Monstress (Steve)
    Sheriff of Babylon (Joe)
    Bang (Joe)

    In-Episode Shout Outs:
