Rick Laird spent decades as one of jazz's most respected bassists — playing with Buddy Rich, Stan Getz, Chick Corea, and most famously as a founding member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra — while quietly carrying a lifelong sense of existential dis-ease and searching for something he couldn't name.

In this wide-ranging conversation, Rick traces his path from a troubled Protestant youth in Catholic Dublin, through early LSD experiences and a first mantra in 1965 London, to his years with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a deep involvement with Scientology, a long battle with alcoholism, and his recovery through AA. He describes the "shock of realization" that came in early 2008 after reading Gangaji's The Diamond in Your Pocket — a moment he calls "the nasty cosmic trick" because what he had been seeking for 45 years had always already been present. He also speaks candidly about living with coccydynia (chronic tailbone pain), the paradox of being human and divine simultaneously, and how post-awakening life feels — more consistent inner peace, less engagement with obsessive thoughts, and an ongoing appreciation for teachers like Gangaji, Eckhart Tolle, Adyashanti, and Ram Dass.

Rick Laird (1941–2021) was a jazz musician best known for his place in the Mahavishnu Orchestra. He later became a professional photographer specializing in jazz portraits and corporate headshots, a private bass tutor, and an author of bass instructional books.

The moment for me was instantaneous. The old me died literally, the new "me" emerged. More accurately stated, awakening took over the life of Doc Roberts, as if this worldly life was stamped onto the infinite. Absolutely everything changed from that moment, yet all strangely remained just the same as it was.

I've been a seeker since the age of 5. I knew a profound truth existed just beneath the surface of the everyday, though somehow ever illusive. Thanks to my capital "D", Dark Night of the Soul, all my years of meditating, researching, attending retreats, listening to enlightened masters and endless self-improvement programs came to an abrupt halt. The bliss of Truth had dawned.

I know from my first moment of conscious realization that life is an incredible gift to be relished and played in.

I know there is absolutely nothing to fear, including death, for I did have a direct personal experience of this as well. We are bathed in Divine love and grace every moment. Absolutely everything that occurs in life is for the highest good -- everything (whether we like it or not). Our job in this life is to simply enjoy what is and the continued unfolding of Divine awakening.

My work in the world is internet based, though I also conduct seminars and counseling. Skiboards.com, my retail winter sports business, is focused on a new form of snow riding -- skiboards. I also offer vocational guidance, assisting individuals to get their passions online, and manage a number of other websites, including DiscoverYourLifesWork.com. I have a B.S. in Psychology, M.S. in Vocational Counseling, and a PhD. in Human Potential Psychology. In 2007, whilst finding myself with much time alone, a spiritual awakening occurred over a matter of a few short weeks. What transpired alongside this initially, was the dark night of the soul, or an emotional and spiritual catharsis. During this dark night I went to the ends of the spectrum of emotional suffering and pain, and then the subsequent awakening was a fundamental shift away from all of that.  

The many ego facades that I portrayed to the outside world, and most importantly, to myself, dropped off the radar. The 'me' was now revealed as having no defined basis, the basis that had seemed apparent for all those years previous to this, was now seen as false. I experienced an inner sensation of emptiness, a stillness, which I came to see as the fundamental true resting place of everything. All is intrinsically connected to All.  

There was no more seeking (I had been seeking for over 20 years). Home had been found within. Thoughts and thinking became more functional and my mind was no longer preoccupied with assessments, analyses and whys and wherefores. Boredom was no more. Emotions were seen as what they are -- just emotions, and not a statement about me. Awareness of the emotional domain (suffering and pain) took away the sting of this very domain. Compassion and love arose, through the acceptance of what was not these within myself. I went on to be graced with profound and direct experiences of Truth that were shown to me unequivocably through my own body and mind. In one such experience I was shown that the Universe is Still Intelligence, this occurred in a dream that was not a 'normal' dream. With each such experience greater and greater inner cleansing took place instantly, simply because I asked. I am grateful daily for what I have been shown, and my wish is for awakening for the many, for it is in conscious awareness that the ghosts are finally laid to rest and we rise beyond inner conflict into fuller self-expression and co-creation.  

I left corporate life and now work as a Spiritual Counsellor and Soul Plan Reader.

Ted and Hillary are teachers in the Waking Down in Mutuality lineage, founded by Saniel Bonder. In this conversation with Rick Archer, they trace their individual paths — Ted's through TM, formless ecstasy, and a pivotal encounter with Saniel; Hillary's through Poonjaji and years of intense physical and emotional challenge — and describe how their relationship itself became a vortex of mutual awakening. Ted credits Hillary as his "embodiment magnet," someone whose slow, deeply grounded wavelength drew his high-frequency spiritual tendencies down into the body and the earth.
