Richard Sylvester is a humanistic psychologist, therapist, lecturer, and long-time speaker on non-duality. In this conversation with Rick Archer, Richard explores the seeing through of separation, the collapse of the sense of self, and why awakening is not something a person achieves. He speaks candidly about the limits of language, the absurdity of trying to make non-duality into a belief system, and the way ordinary life can become astonishing when the sense of being a separate individual is seen through.

Richard also reflects on spiritual practice, the role of stories, the danger of turning non-duality into another ideology, and the freedom of living without the burden of a personal path. From there, her path led to Amma, Mata Amritanandamayi, whose presence and guidance shaped nearly a decade in India and a long period of de-conditioning, love, and surrender.

Joi also talks about the relationship between bhakti and jnana, the role of self-inquiry, and her time at Ramana Maharshi’s ashram in Tiruvannamalai. She describes what happened when she returned to the West with little to hold onto, how surrender deepened, and how the sense of a separate self gradually loosened its grip.
