This week we're wrapping up Matthew Chapter 5. In this section of Matthew Jesus is teaching about the value of our word especially when we consider that God can see past technicalities or false promises. There is a general theme in most of this section of scripture that emphasizes the reality that God knows our hearts which essentially means that God knows our motives and intentionality.

We then move into how to properly address our "enemies". Who is our enemy and how do we treat other people? There's a lot here that may seem like a "no-brainer" but if it is then I pose the question Why do we still struggle with it today?

Yes, you read the title correctly. Before you click off, we're continuing on through our walk through Matthew. Like we started to cover last week, after the Beatitudes Jesus begins to recontextualize and redefine various points of The Law.

While conversations like these can be uncomfortable, they're important to discuss in order to get a full and complete picture of what The Law is getting at and what Jesus is teaching about here.

This week we're moving on from the Beatitudes and and into Jesus's recontexualization of the Law of Moses. Jesus walks through several points contained in the Law and unpacks the heart before what had been heard and taught.

The Law is something that many Christians shy away from due to it's weight and age. However, part of the significance of understand grace, mercy and the atonement in Jesus is understanding the purpose of the Law and the heart of what it's meant to show us about the very character of God and our desperate need for Him.

This week continuing our walk through Matthew and finishing up the Beatitudes by unpacking the realities of the persecution that Jesus talks about for His followers and the realities of how the world will receive us and the message we carry as Christians. Along the way we are plugging that into the full context of who Jesus is, His heart posture towards people and discuss how that should inform how we process persecution and our active involvement in the world.

We then get to discuss the realities of the hope we have in Jesus and our reward in an unchanging, unfailing God in world that constantly changes and the how to be salt of the earth and the light of Christ in each of us that follow Him.
