  • E70. Navigating your design brief

In this episode of the Building Design, Prime Time Podcast hosts Amelia and Frank introduce the importance of design briefs, explaining that a design brief serves as a blueprint for clients to clearly express their project desires to the designer. Frank describes the four main types of clients he encounters, ranging from those with a detailed plan and budget to those with vague or contradictory ideas. The discussion highlights the challenges in accommodating different clients, especially regarding cost awareness and how designers can assist each type of client to achieve their dream home or extension.

Frank highlights how helping clients manage their home-building budgets by clarifying priorities and differentiating between wants and needs. Clients can list their “dream items” and their essential needs, which helps in making adjustments when budget constraints arise.

The conversation emphasises the importance of designers listening carefully to client desires and ensuring those ideas are accurately reflected in the design.

Frank and Amelia explore how local councils manage objections and the impact these disputes can have on the development approval process. The discussion highlights common reasons for objections, such as concerns over privacy, blocked views, or increased traffic, and how these objections can delay or even prevent projects from moving forward.

  • E68. Questionable design trends

In this episode of the Building Design, Prime Time Podcast Frank and Amelia take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about a variety of past questionable design trends, highlighting both their appeal and impracticality. They start by poking fun at outdated elements like old wallpaper, shag pile carpet climbing walls, and the use of asbestos, while reflecting on why these trends occured at the time and if they are likely to return.

The conversation shifts to furniture and home design features such as waterbeds, living room bars, and Chesterfield sofas, as well as less favourable trends like timber toilet seats and chandeliers adorned with cheap plastic and wallpaper.

Frank and Amelia also reflect on materials like stone cladding and velour upholstery, considering how some trends, like faux stone, have improved in modern designs.

Despite the dated aspects of many of these trends, Frank and Amelia express an appreciation for the quality of vintage home design, especially in 1960s kitchens with their unique features like tiled benchtops as well as bright Laminex benchtops in bright orange and green.
