This week I went to BBC Radio Derby. I got this opportunity by speaking to a colleague at work who happened to know somebody who works there. Truth is I went in with no expectations, just wanting to learn what they do, get a tour and try and provide value. One of the people who works there, her husband works in podcasting too and might have a chat with me in the future. Opportunity is everywhere, you don't know where it's hiding until you look for it.
Stop copying people, your journey is your own.
Today (Sunday 16th February) I spoke to a guy named Tom Peyton. I met him on LinkedIn and we have been chatting for a few months now. Today he shared some tips with me about public speaking and sales.
- For public speaking he said - Try and get people at events where your target audience is there but your competition is not. Then you have noone else doing what you do, it shows your expertise and makes you highly valued in the room. Great point which I had nver thought of. For example, if you're in marketing, don't go to a marketing event, go to an event where sport companies are (if thats your target audience) then talk about marketing.
- In regards to sales he shared a tip. This tip is called Lemlist. He said build an email list then send them an email via Lemlist sharing 1 piece of value on how they could improve their website, marketing, personal brand (whatever the service you're offering is) then say "Ihave more ideas if you are interested in a chat?" This value first approach establishes your expertise whilst also making them want more free info.
- If you're like me and wondering how to get email, after finding companies there is a LinkedIn Google Chrome extension called Hunter.io that will pull emails from company pages on LinkedIn.
