  • School Fees, Capital Injection, and Keeping the Plates Spinning β€” Episode 4

This week I'm getting honest about what actually happened when the school fees invoice landed for my daughter's first full year of private education.

The short version β€” my brain did what brains do. Panic, frantically searching for quick fixes, convinced there had to be some faster route to the money I needed. Then I gave it time, talked it through, and came back to the same conclusion I always come back to. Keep doing what you're doing, just more of it.

And then the universe delivered. Out of nowhere I was offered a pre-approved business loan through Monzo that made complete financial sense to take. I talk through the numbers, why it made sense, and how it's essentially brought the business forward by eight to ten months overnight without changing how I source or the risk I take on.

I also get into where the business actually sits right now β€” Amazon FBA as the main engine, eBay growing as a second marketplace, multi-channel fulfilment starting to work, and the Amazon Influencer program continuing to build slowly in the background. More money going in, better cycling of that money back out again, and the systems holding up as the scale increases.

And I'm honest about the thing I'm finding hardest β€” showing up consistently for this. The podcast, the YouTube channel, putting myself out there. When life is this busy, content is the first thing I take my foot off. That's the reality of building in the margins.

  • Episdode 3 - Prrof Beats Assumptions

This week the same lesson kept showing up across everything I had going on β€” stop guessing and look at the actual data.

I talk through a cashflow situation that felt like a problem but turned out to be something else entirely once I actually reviewed the numbers. I get into how my weekly business review is changing the way I make decisions, why I was feeling like the business had taken a step back when actually the opposite was true, and what that led me to change about how I deploy capital going forward.

I also talk about being on the wrong side of a marketplace dispute β€” ordering stock from a third party seller on B&Q, receiving the wrong quantity, and spending nearly two weeks trying to get a resolution. As Amazon sellers we spend a lot of time frustrated at how much Amazon sides with the customer. Being the customer this week was a useful reminder of why that policy exists.

On top of that, a quick one on business insurance for UK Amazon sellers β€” what you need, when you need it, and how I managed to turn the renewal into a cashback win. And finally, an update on the Amazon Influencer program. Five or six videos live, just under five pounds earned, and why that tiny number is actually one of the most encouraging things that happened this week.

Proof of concept beats assumptions every time.

  • RA Roadtrip, Tech Issues & Businesses That Keep Moving

This week I'm sharing the story of a sourcing mistake that turned into a multi-day roadtrip around Boots stores across the North East, all because I missed a subtle difference on a product box.

What started as a simple retail arbitrage purchase became a lesson in recovery, problem-solving, and what happens when you're building a business with very little spare time.

I talk about the reality of handling increasing FBM orders, the difference between being responsible for a product versus being responsible for the entire customer experience, and why small mistakes can have bigger consequences when you're building in the margins of an already busy life.

We also dive into one of the reasons Amazon FBA suits my lifestyle so well. While I was driving around chasing stock and fixing problems, the business itself kept selling. The systems I'd already built kept working, even when I couldn't give them my full attention.

Finally, I share the irony of having to record this episode twice after a technical failure wiped out the original recording, and why resilience isn't about avoiding interruptions, it's about absorbing them and continuing forward.

If you're building a business around a full-time job, family commitments, or limited time, this one's for you.

    Keep building.

  • Episode 1 - Who I Am And Why I'm Building This

Episode one of Built in the Margins.

I'm Russ Britton - firefighter, husband, dad, and someone building real businesses alongside a real life. This first episode is an introduction to who I am, where I've come from, and why I'm doing this.

I talk through my 20 years in the fire service, how I built a dog walking business from scratch to a team of seven, and why my daughter arriving four years ago completely changed how I think about work, time, and what I actually want my life to look like.

From there I get into what I'm building now - Amazon FBA as the main engine, eBay as a capital recovery system, the Amazon Influencer program, and how I'm using Google Sheets automation, AI, and systems to run multiple businesses without it swallowing every hour I have.

This podcast is going to be an honest, open conversation about all of it - the progress, the mistakes, the lessons. No guru framing. Just an operator showing his work.

If you're building something alongside a job, a family, and real responsibilities - this one's for you.
