A striking feature of Malaysian culture is the way we fight to pay the bill. Sometimes this is because of generosity, other times it is to 'show face'. If we lose the battle to pay, we feel indebted to find some opportunity to repay. By instinct, we think and act as if acceptance must be earned through works. And that can make it very hard for us to truly believe gospel a grace.

Is it ok for Christians to participate in the practices of other religions? Is it ok to visit the Hindu temple, or participate in Ching Ming? Is it ok to participate in the Catholic mass, or to eat food that has been offered to the family altar? 1 Corinthians 8, we see that it's not enough to have the right theological answers, we must ask in love towards our brothers and sisters in Christ, who may not yet have grasped the right answers themselves.

I wonder how you think about your relationship with God? Are you more like a servant or are you more like a volunteer? As you serve God, are you simply doing your duty, or does God owe you? In Luke 17:1-10, Luke gives us three short snapshots of the attitudes that disciples of Jesus are to have to one another, to God and to themselves.

As Christians, we often make the mistake of looking for God’s power today as a miraculous sign, a healing touch, a prosperous and healthy life, or a victorious life of overcoming sin. Instead, Paul describes God’s power as resurrecting power that raised Christ from the dead, the same power now working in us. Paul describes the Christian’s previous state as dead in sin - children of wrath who followed the world, the devil, and the desires of our selfish hearts. But in Christ, we have been made alive, saved, and seated with Jesus in the heavenly realms. Paul tells us this change is a result of God’s love, not our goodness; it is God’s gift, not our work - this is the grace of God, something we do not deserve. Having experienced this love and kindness from God, being saved through Jesus Christ - let us live as God’s handiwork by living out the good works He has prepared in advance for us to do, for the praise of His glory.

Head knowledge is insufficient without heart transformation. In Ephesians 1:15-23, we’re reminded that true knowledge of God is not simply knowing intellectual facts about God and the gospel, but having those facts so penetrate our hearts, that they transform our lives at the deepest core.

What does it look like to experience God’s blessing? Blessing is something that all people – Christian and non-Christian are after. but the kind of blessing our world seeks is material. In Ephesians 1, we see how God has given Christians every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. We have been blessed by the electing love of the Father, the redeeming work of the Son, and the assuring work of the Spirit. These blessings are only made available in Christ and should resound with praise for God’s glory.
